Don't you mean tolstoy's original title, "War: what is it good for?"

i know i suggested it - so don't count this as a vote, amybe - but i just thought i'd say the reason i like 'war and peace' is it covers all the options.

and, by including a positive, progressive term in there ('peace') - offers a definition that isn't just about observing a catastrophe happen. if the forum is going to include peace-related issues, if that's what generally, we're all hoping and striving for - i think that should be explicitly stated.

plus it's really dramatic and epic. like the times we're living through may come to be seen, one day. "what did you do in the Great War?"; "i fought for Great Peace."

To be a separate category this 'forum' needs to make some reference to 9/11, the nature of what happened, and allow various responses (war and peace), otherwise why not leave it in switchboard. "Ground Zero" captures the 'zeitgeist' in terms of actual language used to represent the attacks, but has connotations of nuclear bommbs, devastation. The most interesting threads in the NY Washington forum have been the debates/discussions about US politics, history, responsibilities, whether US's chickens are coming home to roost,or unprovoked act of maniacal terror. "9/11" sets the date and has connotations of "American emergency" -911 - the phone number to dial (Public Enemy's "911 is a joke").
Gotta go, but I go for a combination:
9/11: Ground Zero.

Ok guys - here are some pointers.

1) It has to be descriptive.

That's all.

Tom, did you envisage having any descriptors underneath the heading, as is the case with the others?

For what it's worth, the phrase 'the new world crisis' has some currency in Oz.

I like The New World Crisis, myself.

It avoids mentioning either 'war' or 'terrorism' (neither of which exactly fits the bill) and refers to actions/reactions/events exacerbated by and proceeding from the events on the 11th of September. I think that any threads on world political topics that don't refer to how this has all snowballed in the last three weeks belong in the Switchboard, otherwise you might as well just close that forum down. It also fully and completely describes the nature of both the forum and the threads that are expected to fill it.

I vote for either NEW WORLD CRISIS or CRISIS

I'm for 'apocalypse, no!' but that's just 'cause it's a Will Oldham quote.

The Global Realpolitik Terrorism Crisis?

I am also not totally convinced the forum needs to continue... seems like the issues are now so fragmented that maybe some of it could be better in the Switchboard.

maybe if threads are headed with something to i.d them as being relevent to the post-911 fallout if the specific forum is dissolved? not sure what. maybe just simply 911: insert thread title here, though actually i don't like the reductiveness of that. anyone got a better identifier suggestion?

New World Crisis sounds good to me - USA being sometimes referred to as 'the new world'. From this thread I don't think there is going to be absolute consensus on what to call the forum. But I still return to it and think it's worth continuing . . . so, moderator Tom it's your call . . .

i don't have too much opinion on the title, but the section should ABSOLUTELY stay. it's made this board more relevant than it has ever been. having to troll through all the other sections looking for scraps of opinion and news items about what's happening would diffuse its power immensely. The concentration of information and thinking in that area is phenomenal it doesnt make sense to dismantle it out of an arbitrary policy decision about how to structure the board.

i'm with mystery.

we can't just put 911 back into the pack. IT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING HAPPENING IN THE WORLD RIGHT NOW. and it is ver much, still happening. ok: we're in a news lull, maybe - but as far as i'm concerned this is chiefly because the US/UK are being careful not to make any of their customary diplomatic 'duh's before launching the next, decisive stage of their campaign.

and i still, stubbornly say 'war and peace'.
