sorry if there was already a thread this could have gone in that i missed...

mainly i want to say that if the forum is going to stay for at least a while, maybe the name should change? as the situation and its repercussions get more and more global, the name is increasingly inappropriate. my suggestion for an alternate name is 'the war for pure terror', since that seems to be the stakes of the conflict - whose capacity to inflict political terror will be preserved, valorised, protected, and whose will be punished and destroyed. it might be too long, or too partisan. but it's a thought.

I'm very much for changing the name of the forum, but I'm not sure what to change it to. Any other suggestions?

Well, the news channels in the US call it "America's New War".

suggestions:

World War 2.1
DEATHMATCH: Bush Vs. bin Ladin
The Fall Of Rome-The Next Generation
The Empire Strikes Back
Return of the Jihad

How about 'War in America'

There's a book out called "McWorld v. Jihad", and perhaps an appropriate title for the forum would be that, or maybe "The Wild, Wild West v. Jihad."

I think I'm finally ready for some glibness about the whole thing...

Why don't we open it up a little and call it "Murdering America" where the former isn't a verb?

ok. There are a few suggestions. Now can everyone vote on one of the above that they DIDN'T personally suggest and we'll see which one wins out.

I nominate shortening "Fallout of the events of Washington and New York" to simply "Fallout". "Fallout" is pretty appropriate (but hopefully, won't become overly literal...), and would mix in well with the other one-word forum names.

I don't think you can call it war in America because I don't think it's going to remain IN America for very much longer.
WW3?
What about just Terrorism? Or War? Both are a bit broad but maybe that's a good thing - a broader discussion on war/terrorism around the world?

in that case i say go with 9/11 aftermath

Except that in my language it's 11/9 aftermath

I like 'murdering america' for its ambiguity, but would rather get away from us-centricity. I also think it's important to avoid names which accept the US gov't version of events (like 'the war on terror' or '9/11 aftermath' - as if we weren't looking at the aftermath of decades of foreign policy, as if 9/11 came out of nowhere). 'fallout' is catchy, but depressing.

'war and peace', maybe. if we're voting, that's what i'm voting for, but i think it would be better to leave the options open and try to get consensus on something. if the options are still open, what about 'new wars,' 'the new war,' 'the new crisis,' or something along those lines?

You know, 'Crisis' is another pretty good catchy one-word forum name.

My vote is going for 'Fallout' though, if anyone is counting.

I vote 'war on Terror', but like Crunchy B,would like to avoid US centric connotations . . . so, "War on Terra" ?

Except that as someone else pointed out above, calling it that does add to the growing tendency to obscure what came before 911...

I quite like 'apocalypse, no!'... I dunno, though, I'm increasingly unclear as to why we need to keep it open to post in when we've got the Switchboard (and I'm not just saying that cos I moderate the latter).

while it is wrong to ignore the event leading up to 9/11 it would be rather foolish to think that the events that followed would have such wide reaching reprocussion if the attack had not been so centred on America.

See, I think that would make this site look quite a bit more suspicious and threatening.. 'switchboard' 'revolution' 'headshop' 'terrorism' 'underground' ---you know what I'm getting at?

Like Todd, I think I'm ready for some (black) humour, so my vote goes to Flux's

The Fall Of Rome-The Next Generation

or is that too New York-centric?

Ground Zero can mean a lot of things. That's what they're calling the site where the towers used to be. I also picked it as the title of an essay I wrote that's in Creation, G.Z. as a metaphor for people's collapsed world-views that have to be reconstructed.
