Does this show have any hopes of being succesful or is it doomed to fail?

It's got a chance. The designs look pretty cool - Star Trek retro!

The best policy, in cases like this, is to reserve all judgements until the end.

That said, unless they're willing to call on artistic license quite a lot, they may get mired in continuity problems, and the show is probably doomed from the fact that it's a prequel.

whne i first heard the premis i was like "gahd that is the dumbest idea yet" but from the further promo stuff, it MAY just be cool, i dunno, but i work at a UPN affiliate and have to watch it anyway so yay for me if it's good, if not, then i'll bring headphones

I dont care..Ive sort of give up on the Trek franchise after nextgen but did enjoy a bit of DS9..voyager does NOT exist however. As for Enterprise..im thinking it going to be amazing simply because it has to be in order to pull off such a lame concept.

Hey folks, remeber Babylon 5..new series maybe commingout soon...now THATS sci-fi!

how does that saying go? hope for the best but expect the worst...that's the way that i am going to approach this show. i would realy, really, really like it to be good but i am not holding my breath on it. also, it will be nice to see scott bakula again, he was a lot of fun in quantum leap and i am looking forward to seeing what he does with his character.

man, I pity the current Star Trek administration. I can't even begin to concieve what it's like to have a legion of Psychotic Fans on one side and a Delusional Panel of Executives on the other. How could you ever possibly please both sides?

I'll wait till I see Enterprise before I choose to admire it only for it's production design. And to be fair, none of the Star Treks in my lifetime have really picked up until the 3rd season anyway; With the exception of Voyager, which sucked on a fundamental level, only "redeeming" itself with a transparent attempt to capitalize on geek-sexuality. or lack thereof.

Okay. It premiered. And I'm ashamed to say I watched it. I might even watch it again. *sobs with shame*

OK, the two hour premiere episode wasn't exactly astonishing. It had it's humorous moments and managed to contradict some points made in previous incarnations of the Star Trek program.

But hey, the rub down scene made it all worth while, didn't it?

Say WHAT?????? Where can I find out about this?

I shall be watching Enterprise as soon as it hits Sky One, and am looking forward to it thoroughly. Mind you, I watched 2 episodes of Andromeda as well.

Does this incarnation of The Franchise actually take us, step by step, through the events which caused all the nations of the world to decide, suddenly, that they would 'all just get along', give up money and evolve into the altruistic, id-less, peace-lovin' (but uniformly hetero) humans we know and love as StarFleet? (Or the Federation or the American World Empire or whatever.)

Ok, i liked it dammit

100 or so years afte the events of First Contact, Vulcans holding us back by not sharing tech, the psuedo moto cross outfits (i want one of those jackets with the criss-cross pattern) and the dual gun weilding bad ass captain i always wished there would be.

black guy as helm and sian girl as comms, kinda a flip flop of the first (or next depending) series role use

a british guy--hooray! dont recall hearing a british accent in star trek ever

curious how the klingon war comes out of humans helping out in the pilot.

Cardassian Dr???????? or just lazy char design???

ok, im at work and that was disjointed

<snooty Hollywood flunkee voice> Pssshaw. Who has the budget for that?</snooty Hollywood flunkee voice> I read somewheres that one of the cast members of this series is said to be gay. Though that could just be wishful thinking. God knows it's long overdue.

Slightly off topic.

On Saturday I had a converstion with a very inteligent chap who claimed that this "war on terrorism" was the first stage in our evolution towards a Star Trekesque state. Mind you he also suggested that Starship Troopers (service guarantees you rights) was a good model for future society. I did point out to him that Troopers is a parody on the facist state.

I caught a bit of it last night, watched it in between a bunch of phone calls, so a lot went right past me... I thought it was decent, far better than either Deep Space 9 or Voyager...it has an element of cheese to it that I kinda liked, and there were a few sex jokes that I was happy to see in a Star Trek context. I disagree that this is a bad idea for the show...it's probably the best idea they could have had.

The only thing that really PISSED ME OFF and made me not want to watch was the horrible, horrible, horrible theme song...it's like a fucking evil combination of the theme from 'Growing Pains' and 'Dawson's Creek'....ugh!

I've heard very, very bad things about the theme song. The concept makes me cringe.

But I do like the idea that it's supposed to be a simultaneous prequel and sequel. The temporal cold war may not be wholly original, but it'll be nice to see their take on it.

I've also hear it'll have more character emphasis, and some arc plots. Good. They should never have returned to the episodic formula after DS9.

(PS - I've only read the prepublicity. So actually I know jack. Makes a change, huh? )

Doomed? I think not, even though I expect that "Enterprise" is now being incinerated by fanboys on newsgroups and message boards all over the internet.

I enjoyed the first episode and was much more impressed with the cast than I was with ST: Voyager. It reminded me more of Crusade or Farscape than Star Trek, which seems like a good thing to me. The Human-Vulcan tension made it a lot more interesting than the political correctness from ST: Next Generation on. I like the cast, especially Dr. Phlox with his freaky Jokeresque smile.

Does it fit in with the rest of the Star Trek franchise? No it doesn't, but that's what will keep me watching for the time being.

Yeah, the opening theme was pretty cheesy, but geez what do you expect, a custom made Jerry Goldsmith score?

man the theme DID suck soooo hard... the docoter, not cardasian, but some NEW alien that as of the tapin' of the premere was un-named (so said in tv guide interview this summer)... has hope (maybe then again what does my voyager lovin' ass know)... wished the rub down seen coulda been sexier... best thing BY FAR was the double barrel plasma shotgun at the start!

What you read either meant that the actor was gay or that, according to longstanding tradition when a new ST series comes out, a massive letter writing campaign 'requested' (finaly) the inclusion of a gay character. We'll see... (ahem)%

Well, my criteria for marking it when it gets to Sky in the Spring is that we were promised Das Boot in Space and a crew that's trying to pull together despite the fact that earth isn't a happy family yet. I'll be impressed if they actually live up to that (which I doubt) and don't go all soft-focus on the realities. I've seen most of the second half of the first season of Andromeda and can't help but notice that all these shit-hot mercs that Dylan Hunt (rhyming slang!) has persuaded to work for him are all good, noble, well-meaning people and not vicious psychotic killers. (and the girl with the tail is much more attractive then either the computer or the second in command). But, back to the topic...

If they stick to their billing, the show will be good, if they go all Star Trek it'll be crap.

Saw it last night, thanks to the fine folks at www.jsr.com. And I liked it. A lot. But damn, does that theme tune suck! I mean, given the style of the show, I can see why the traditional ST neo-classical theme wouldn't work, but that's still no excuse for that sub-sub-Gary Barlow toss. If I'd been speccing up the theme tune I would have gone along the same lines as farscape, or some kinda imitation-aphex-twin-and-steve-vai-tune....

It will probably air in Brazil in 3 years time...

Isn't it funny that the Tv franchise that's shown several different alien designs has never used the 'Grey' (skninny, bald, big-headed, black-eyed) alien design we're so used to in our culture?

Ganesh has a good point. Do Starfleet officers have a sallary? I know it has been covered in previous threads, but isn't this ultra-futuristic world too 'zen-fascist'?

Maybe 'Enterprise' seems a bit more lively: it seems to have more guts to it, to be less asceptic.

By the time of Next Gen they have 'done away with the idea of money' which begs thequestion of how they trade with other species as they seem to be the only ones.

So what did people think? Aired for the first time last night over here.

I liked it. I loved the way things are cruder, smutty jokes, the rub down scene , two the handed phazer weilding captain. God even the introduction of phazers.
The ship designs are nice as are the uniforms.
I'll be watching this again.

But that theme is really shit.
