But Tom, I don't think the anxieties caused by the film should be diffused. I think the point (at least it clearly was in the original, in the new version it's muddled up with an animal rights issue) is to discuss racism, to display an analogue to the white/black conflict and invite commentary.

If you ask me, the power of PotA's message would be completely diminished if the main character were black. Never mind the outcry that would likely arise (and distract from said message) if we were treated to images of the apes throwing a black man into shackles and chains and forcing him to work as a servant.

And the darker haired apes were more violent... And the race issue was, well was it even there? And only women (human or ape) get branded. Yup, this movie said nothing except "carry on."

The movie should have been called PLANET of the HORSES

ok, so what bothered me the most was that, while the thing did look good, there were continuity fuck-ups all the way through it. i mean, at least the 60s version had charlton getting chin-stubble. and the blonde chick was a waste of space, with her simpering and her perfectly coiffed hair with its shiny blond highlights and flawless skin that had never had an insect bite, never mind scrambled through the thorny jungle every day. and the kid brother doing his hero thing? ugh.

luckily, i didn't have high expectations so i wasn't disappointed overall, just irritated by the hollywoodisms.

and yeah, the black man dies. but isn't that one of the rules of sci-fi movies? my main irritation was not that they had one "token" black or oriental person, but that, actually, the humans didn't look more mixed race. i mean, the crew of the ship wasn't that big, so there woul've been interbreeding, wouldn't there?

as for the horses, maybe they did have horses on the ship. dunno why they would, but they did carry live animals. maybe they weren't all apes?

i found it wierd that thade seemed to be the least human-like, jumping around and beating his chest.

on the whole, the look of the film and the plot inconsistencies didn't bother me as much as the lack of subtlety in most of the acting. all those overly gruff voices really kinda grated and seemed really hammy.

Well, I finaly got round to seeing this last night.

Well, I wasn't blown away by PotA but I wasn't throwing things at the screen.
There were some bad bits, why were the bong smoking apes listening to electronic music?, why the frantic swim for the surface when Mark Walberg was in a space suit? the ending? But there were some great bits, how come no one here mentioned Tim Roth? He was brilliant, he was the chimp and one of the most vicious bad guys I've seen in a movie in ages.
The simpering, token super model bint. Everyone seems to be bitching that she was pointless. That was the point I recon. Here was the obvious love intrest, big Tits, ripped clothes and obvious thing for the main character, and he ignored her cause he was more intrested in the ape with a brain. When's the last time you seen a action movie where the hero went for the brains over cleavage?
(I'm knida worried that I think HBC is much better looking as an ape)
Anyone know if there was a scene where there was a love intrest between man and ape?
And what was that stuff about the end being a rip off of Kevin Smith?

If you thought PotA was shit go see tomb rader and be a little nicer.

Yeah, Tim Roth did kick ass a bit - if i hadn't known that it was him before going in, i don't think i would have copped it.

Regarding the simpering bint with the crack hair and makeup team following her around - Davison (Davidson?) didn't choose brains over cleavage - HBC just got a quick peck, the Simpering Bint (tm) got tongues! And then he fecked off and left them both wondering what the fuck to do next...

Apparently, HBC has said in an interview somewhere that there were man/ape intimacy scenes, but they were excised so as not to offend delicate sensibilities. Also apparently, Tim Burton has denied that any such scenes were shot. Ooo, mysterious...

Now, the Kevin Smith thing. It's not the "he lands on what he thinks is his home planet, and... APES!" ending that's in contention, it's the image of the Ape-raham Lincoln (Thade) statue... It's ripped from(or at least is almost the exact same image as) part of Kevin's "Jay & Silent Bob" four-parter - currently collected as "Chasing Dogma", if anyone wants to know.

Apparently (again), there are no plans in the Kevin Smith camp to bring legal action against Burton (despite rumors to the contrary), Kevin just thinks it's kinda weird and funny (funny haha) that the same image appears in POTA as in a comic he wrote what, a year ago? Year and a half?

And i wouldn't get too worried about the "better-looking-as-an-ape" thing. There are many, many people who agree.

There's just something about a woman with nose-holes in the front of her face and sidies Elvis'd be proud of...

I read it as simpering bint was pushing for the davidson snog where he gave Ari the kiss.

I could be wrong.
but I doubt it.

I'm reasonably sure I heard that Kevin Smith admitted he was only joking about suing Burton/20th C. Fox.

But anyway, who the fuck cares what Kevin Smith says?

Just my Humble Opinion, and not intended to cause slight or offense:
you guys went to Planet of the Apes and expected a serious movie? I bet you were pissed off at how stupid sony's "Godzilla" was too.... ("That's not the real Godzilla!" "You mean it's not a guy in a rubber suit?")

4 PAGES devoted to poking holes in POTA is a little like holding a competition to find the tallest of the seven dwarves.

Well i saw this a few days ago and I was enjoying it up until the last five minutes and even after that I couldn't stop laughing at the ending.
It was a good laugh and that's all I care.
And not one more word about that gorgeous bint.*sigh*
Best supporting dress oscar is in the bag.

I enjoyed the movie for the performances and presence of Tim Roth and Michael Clarke Duncan primarily but am aware of its flaws.

People upset by this remake, would do well to remember that all the sequels, the series and cartoon were far worse than this.

I discussed the ending with many people and no one explanation is flawless, other than that a sequel will explain all.

My theory is that it will involve either a rescue mission sent to find the Oberon in keeping with the previous sequel, or something involving Peroclies having been left on the ape planet with knowledge of space flight.

An interesting theory was put forward by my girlfriend. It is as follows:

The Oberon crash lands as a result of following Wahlberg's pod. Due to the changing time line created by the electrical storm, when he leaves the planet at the end he travels to a time when the Oberon is still in orbit. The Oberon tracks him back to Earth, but lands many years in Earths past, and thus the same evolution takes place as on the Ape world.

However this does not explain why Thade would be Ape-raham Lincoln. In addition there would have been other humans around outnumbering the genetically modified apes ad not allowing them to come to dominance. It would of course undo the entire creation of the ape planet and the actions of the film.

And so I think it is all to be revealed in the sequel.

Argh, I hope they don't make a sequel.

Actually, I heard that Burton made that ending expressly because he didn't want a sequel to be made. Sort a "Sequel this, fuckers!" sort of thing.
