10/10

Miller is God.

If you enjoyed seeing Batman beat on Superman the first time round, you'll definetly want to read this comic.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

I'd prefer to see Batman beat off Superman. I guess Midnighter and Apollo were created for people like me, eh? In theory, anyway...

What is this thread?

I do not understand.

This is The Knowledge's continuing argument with Cameron about whether DK2 is any cop. Cameron's secret weapon power is a knowledge of art and reason, Knowledge's secret weapon power is fanboy enthusiasm and the ability to post beyond the point where anybody cares any more.

Yeah, but it's The Knowledge we're talking about here, so that makes it alright.

I ain't read Dark Knight pt 2 but anyone who ever had hair like Miller does on his photo on the back of the old edition of Dark Knight Returns can never get 10/10, its logistically impossible. I ain't a fashion gimp at all, but anyone with hair like that is either Bruce Springsteen or a total cunt. (Or both even)

Reviving this because the second issue came out yesterday. And it wasn't a complete disappointment, possibly because my expectations of it were very low. Similar to that big earth-changing thing that Alex Ross person drew a few years back, maybe (what was that called again?), but I have a feeling if I was 12 years old right now I'd think DK2 was the shit. Anyone else read it yet?

I'm liking it. As for the art, I dunno, some of it I like and some I think is sub standard. Funny thing is though, I just reread Dark Knight Returns and I'm noticing a lot of 'flaws' with the art that I didn't notice when it first came out.

Is his art really that much worse this time around or are we just more unforgiving.

Captain Zoom
14:30 / 31.01.02
Yup. Art still barfed on dogs. Story is marginally more interesting now. I think my big problem is that if you compare DK to DK2, the story is so obviously inferior. This could just be any Batman elseworlds story really. And to be honest, I'm enjoying pretty much every hero other than Batman in this one. Flash is a treat.

It's a good story, but I don't think it's a great story. Unless #3 is completely fantabulous. And we've still gotta do something about that art.

Invix, not sure if you were kidding or not, but it was called "Kingdom Come". And that was a great story.

Zoom.

Haus about we all give each other a big lovely huggle?
14:36 / 31.01.02
....if you like enormous piles of wank.

"Look! What will he be like in the future?

What about her!

"Hey, what if Nightwing and Starfire had a baby? What sort of costume would it have?"

*splap*

Hmm, Kingdom Come covered that ground well though..., and it was fun in "Oh really" kind of way.

DK2. Hmm, will wait until part 2, doesn't have the charm of the first one, because it's all laid out in the first.

Haven't read it yet.
Any place where I can find any reviews, new art or whatever about this issue?

In all fairness to the Boss, he hasn't had hair that bad for years now...

So, what's the major spoiler? What happened in the comic? I seem to remember Miller talking about something happening in the second issue that would seem inspired by 9/11 in spite of the comic being completed before that date...

I just reread part 2 again.

the art *does* suck.

*sigh*

The Natural Way
09:46 / 01.02.02
It does.

Cinematic grandeur? The guy's completely given up on backgrounds, or anything that'd give the impression of any kind of space/place/scope. What a prick.

And, I don't care how much the fanboys gabble on about how wonderfully "stylised" his characters/figures are, they look rubbish. RUBBISH, I say!

"Wow! The superheroes have returned and they look really RUBBISH!"

There are some fun ideas in there, but I'm w/ Tann: "let's see how these guys'll look in the Future!" Balls. Old idea. Don't really care. And, anyway, they look RUBBISH.

Poooooh, stinky comic.....

I think Haus was talking about Kingdom Come.

Not that that makes it less applicable to DK2.

I think the only rendering of a character I really like is the Question and that's probably because his featureless face keeps Miller from putting wrinkle lines all over it.

The Question's coming off like a third-rate Rorschach, and I thought Martian Manhunter was Ben Grimm, for a second there.

And the 9.11-inspired event was the flying batmobile smashing into that building.

Lothar Tuppan
13:02 / 01.02.02
I just meant the rendering, not the characterization.

I really, really, really, hated the way miller treated the Manhunter.

13:12 / 01.02.02
Ahh, I see. This is off-topic, but Rorschach was inspired in part by the Question, wasn't he?

And yeah, Martina Manhunter is such a cool fucking character, seemed like a waste killing him off like that.

I would have been more excited about a 'Martian Manhunter Returns' mini series where he kicks Superman's ass working in conjunction with a still underground Batman. Human and Alien working together to change the world.

Oh well, I am still having fun with DK2. More so than a lot of comics out there. It's just not a masterpiece.

Yeah, for a non-Morrison, non-Milligan, hugely promoted mainstream comicbook it's not all that bad. Compare it to the first Star Wars prequel and it's Citizen Fucking Kane...

Surely this is one of the reasons why the comics industry is so fucked: extremely low standards.

Jesus, I can't believe anyone posting here has anything good to say about Kingdom Cunt.

Marvel at Mark Waid's inferior, dull, uninspired storytelling. Thrill as the DC marketing machine lauches itself into hyperspace. Gawp Mr Ross's brush-strokes... so, so, so beautiful.

Or don't.

As for DK2, Lennox, you don't need to read a whole bunch of reviews written by dumb, inarticulate fanboys. The threads devoted to the subject on this forum contain all the insight you'll ever need.

Anyone else think that comics are utterly impoverished when it comes to criticism.

just read issue 2 of dk2. now that was lame. bright pictures with nothing to say. reads so dated. tries to collage opinions of the 21st century in sound bites. miller seems to have very little to say about heroes or the world today. feels like miller has done a john byrnes. gone minimal in style, packs in comic book nostalgia with a tinge of cynicism. no interesting characters. no setting of mood. just batman doing nothing but appearing to know it all. superman pathetic (but not in any poignant way). is there a threat in this series. so eighties in blaming media and government ethics and corporations. whoope, it's another war for batman. martha washington did it better. at least kingdom come looks at outdated ideals and bloated heroes. dk2 tries to be edgey but ends up embarrasing. too many guest stars with walk on parts. like faded stars appearing in cheesey sitcoms looking so out of place that they just ham it up but not in a b-grade kind of way. what's with the drawing style. feels like a doodling book with crayons.
maybe miller thinking too much about his jesus project and needs some extra cash.
disappointing and boring is my final assessment

Haus Of Pain

And a fair assessment at that.

However, let's not defend Kingdom Cunt.

So, so, so beautiful.

Is that the tennis-playing lesbian superheroine who dispatches her (male) victims with a well-placed serve to the throat?

Page 2 - the Black Canary - what is that on her right hand side ? A hump ? A deformed shoulder blade ? It couldn't be one of her - no, surely not - no-ones got one there. Have they ???

I can't believe I spent six quid on this shite again. I actually thought the first one wasn't too offensive, but issue two felched big time. It was like watching a very crap Saturday morning cartoon. The plot moves like a crippled wildebeest, the art looks like it has been scratched with a compass and bottle of Quink on the warty back of a long-term prison inmate, the dialogue is more stilted than a circus acrobat convention, and whereas the Dark Knight Returns allowed the story to flow with the minimum of disbelief suspension, The Dark Knight Pops In Again (or whatever the fuck it's called) frankly makes me embarrassed to be seen reading it. So much so that I've given it away alread. Gah. I could have bought a packet of fags and a pint for what that tripe cost me.

I'm wondering why almost everyone read this entirely as a comic about superheroes in the future, rather than as a fantasy story about the present. No, DK2 won't change your life- but hell it was nice and shiny and it's a kick in the pants to see superheroes taking on the *real* evil in the world.

But the backgrounds (or lack thereof) do really suck.
