Jack Fear
15:18 / 19.12.02
People work so hard to keep a lid on their anger
To see that justice will prevail
To no avail
Their efforts fail
Something else is working harder

Something else, something else is working harder
something gets away with murder

yesterday:

I see a dark star drivin' at his magic, snatch it
kiss me up a way go crystal cracking
I can't wait
I can't stay a candle
gotta change my mind before it burns out

I'm the cocker on the rock
wind is whipping through my stupid mop

I see a falling snowgirl walking Broadway
turns the corner at 14th and I know there's no way
it's alright
it's a lighted candle
and I know that she'll be okay by Sunday

I'm the cocker on the rock
coming back start shining
in your electric clock

it's safe to say, candle
tonight's the day, candle
it's alright now, candle
the wind's away, candle
never thought I'd see a dark star falling

I'm the cocker on the rock
wind is whipping through my stupid mop

I wish I had some goddamn milk
My Cheerios just ain't the same

From a song called 'Milk' but can't remember who it's by.

The Return Of Rothkoid
22:16 / 19.12.02
When the day is done
Down to earth then sinks the sun
Along with everything that was lost and won
When the day is done.

When the day is done
Hope so much your race will be all run
Then you find you jumped the gun
Have to go back where you began
When the day is done.

When the night is cold
Some get by but some get old
Just to show life's not made of gold
When the night is cold.

When the bird has flown
Got no-one to call your own
Got no place to call your home
When the bird has flown.

When the game's been fought
You speed the ball across the court
Lost much sooner than you would have thought
Now the game's been fought.

When the party's through
Seems so very sad for you
Didn't do the things you meant to do
Now there's no time to start anew
Now the party's through.

When the day is done
Down to earth then sinks the sun
Along with everything that was lost and won
When the day is done.

-Nick Drake, "Day Is Done"

Regrettable Juvenilia
22:08 / 22.12.02
I'm anti-imperial
anti-trust
anti-gun if the shit won't bust
anti-corporate, they anti-my essence
anti-snortin' them anti-depressants
but i'm not pro-poppin' em;
i'm provocative
and pro-stoppin' them FBI operatives
who professional at Black Man Pounce
and hand you a sentence that you can't pronounce
I'm also anti-narco, anti-vice
911 marks the anti-christ
they anti-social, pointin' M-16's;
guess i'm anti-the-anti-nigger-machine
Proletarian, funkadelicparliamentarian
pro-revolt-in-the-21st-centurian
pro-running up in Congress sayin' "fuck it all!"
but bring the people with you, that's the protocol
This beat is joyful like jailbreaks
the whole world is anti-United Snakes
so check it out, anticipate the anti-venom
and move your antibodies to this revolution rhythm
we goin' be fuckin' with 'em
pro-union but most lost they bite
anti-muthafuckas-crossin' a strike
take a look around and be for or against
but you can't do shit if you ridin' the fence.

Ride the fence
now you don't really wanna
ride the fence
now do you really wanna
ride the fence?
why would you really wanna
ride the fence
don't ride the fence.
Ride the fence
now you don't really wanna
ride the fence
now do you really wanna
ride the fence?
why would you really wanna
ride the fence
don't ride the fence.

I'm anti-uppin'-your-dollars-with-telekinesis
(I done tried everyday, and that shit decreases)
Anti-them-anti-crime-bill-pieces
We need cash and that's the anti-thesis
I'm pro-overthrow of the "Hip-Hop Nation"
pro-layin'-low-til-I'm-off-probation
pro-people's-control-of-the-cash-and-corporations
pro-prophylactic yet pro-creation
anti-watered-down-drinks-in-fancy-cups
anti-promoters-who-don't-ante-up
but i'm not anti-thug
i know that power is the most effective anti-drug
i'm pro-Zapatista
pro-Cuba
Viva!
Pro-la raza sayin' "fuck la migra!"
policia se asesina
lemme show you what i mean
I'm anti-republican and democratic
if they self-destruct
that's anti-climactic
tired of bein' hunted like an antelope
take the system by the throat
that's the antidote
so I pose a proposition
take a look, be in support or opposition
then be proactive proceed with confidence
'cause you know that you can't change shit by ridin' the fence

Ride the fence
now you don't really wanna
ride the fence
now do you really wanna
ride the fence?
why would you really wanna
ride the fence
don't ride the fence.
Ride the fence
now you don't really wanna
ride the fence
now do you really wanna
ride the fence?
why would you really wanna
ride the fence
don't ride the fence.

- The Coup, 'Ride The Fence'

Constitution Hill

she went over to his apartment
clutching her decision
and he said, did you come here to tell me goodbye?
so she built a skyscraper of procrastination
and then she leaned out the twenty-fifth floor window
of her reply
and she felt like an actress
just reading her lines
when she finally said
yes. it's really goodbye this time
and far below was the blacktop
and the tiny toy cars
and it all fell so fast
and it all fell so far

and she said:
you are a miracle but that is not all
you are also a stiff drink and i am on call
you are a party and i am a school night
and i'm lookin' for my door key
but you are my porch light

and you'll never know, dear
just how much i loved you
you'll probably think this was
just my big excuse
but i stand committed
to a love that came before you
and the fact that i adore you
is but one of my truths

what of the mother
whose house is in flames
and both of her children
are in their beds crying
and she loves them both
with the whole of her heart
but she knows she can only
carry one at a time?
she's choking on the smoke
of unthinkable choices
she is haunted by the voices
of so many desires
she's bent over from the business
of begging forgiveness
while frantically running around
putting out fires

but then what kind of scale
compares the weight of two beauties
the gravity of duties
or the ground speed of joy?
tell me what kind of gauge
can quantify elation?
what kind of equation
could i possibly employ?
and you'll never know, dear
just how much i loved you
you probably think this was
just my big excuse
but i stand committed
to a love that came before you
and the fact that i adore you
is just one of my truths

so i
i'm goin' home
to please the one i so love pleasing
and i don't expect
he'll have much sympathy for my grieving
but i guess that this is the price
that we pay for the privilege
of living for even a day
in a world with so many things
worth believing
in

I'm losing my edge
I'm losing my edge
the kids
are coming up from behind
I'm losing my edge
I'm losing my edge
to the kids from France
and from London

but I was there
I was there in 1968
I was there at the first Can show
in Cologne

I'm losing my edge
I'm losing my edge
to the kids whose footsteps
I hear when they get on the decks

I'm losing my edge
to the internet seekers
who can tell me
every member of every good group from 1962-1978

I'm losing my edge
I'm losing my edge
to all the kids in tokyo & berlin
to the art school Brooklynites, in little jackets
and borrowed nostalgia for the unremembered 80s

I'm losing my edge
I'm losing my edge

but I was there

I was there

losing my edge
I'm losing my edge
I can hear their footsteps
every night on the decks

but I was there
I was there in 1974
for the first Suicide practices
in a loft in New York City
I was working on the organ sounds

I was there when captain beefheart started his first band.
I told him, "don't do it that way. you'll never make a dime"

I was there
I was the first guy playing Daft Punk to the rock kids.
I played it at CBGBs
everybody thought it was crazy
we all know

I was there
I've never been wrong
I used to work in a record store
I had everything before everyone

I was there in the Paradise Garage DJ booth with Larry Levan
I was there in Jamaica during the great sound clashes
I woke up naked on the beach in Ibiza in 1988

but I'm losing my edge
to better looking people
with better ideas
and more talent
but actually, they're really nice

I'm losing my edge

I heard you have a compilation of every good song done by anybody
every great song by the Beach Boys
all the underground hits
all the Modern Lover's tracks
I heard you have vinyl of every Niagra record, on german import
i heard you have a white label of every seminal detroit techno hit
85, 86, 87

I heard you that have a cd compilation of every great 60s track
and another box set of the 70s

I hear you're buying a synthesizer, and an arpegiator
and throwing your computer out the window
because you want to make something real
you wanna make a Yaz record

I hear that you and your band have sold your guitars
and bought turntables
I hear that you and your band have sold your turntables
and bought guitars
I hear everybody you that know is more relevant than everybody I know

you don't know what you really want
you don't know what you really want
you don't know what you really want
you don't know what you really want

The other night dear, as I lay sleeping
I dreamed I held you in my arms
But when I awoke, dear, I was mistaken
So I hung my head and I cried.

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

I'll always love you and make you happy,
If you will only say the same.
But if you leave me and love another,
You'll regret it all some day:

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

You told me once, dear, you really loved me
And no one else could come between.
But not you've left me and love another;
You have shattered all of my dreams:

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

In all my dreams, dear, you seem to leave me
When I awake my poor heart pains.
So when you come back and make me happy
I'll forgive you dear, I'll take all the blame.

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

I wanna be around to pick up the pieces
When somebody breaks your heart
Some somebody twice as smart as I

A somebody who will swear to be true
As you used to do with me
Who'll leave you to learn
That mis'ry loves company - wait and see

I mean, I wanna be around to see how he does it
When he breaks your heart to bits
Let's see if the puzzle fits so fine

And that's when I'll discover that revenge is sweet
As I sit there applaudin' from a front-row seat
When somebody breaks your heart
Like you, like you broke mine
-Sadie Vimmerstedt and Johnny Mercer, "I Wanna Be Around"

and, more appropriately:

I walk along the street of sorrow
The boulevard of broken dreams
Where gigolo and gigolette
Can take a kiss without regret
So they forget their broken dreams

You laugh tonight and cry tomorrow
When you behold your shattered schemes
Gigolo and gigolette
Wake up to find their eyes are wet
With tears that tell of broken dreams

Here is where you'll always find me
Always walking up and down
But I left my soul behind me
In an old cathedral town

The joy that you find here you borrow
You cannot keep it long it seems
Gigolo and gigolette
Still sing a song and dance along
The boulevard of broken dreams

Here is where you'll always find me
Always walking up and down
For I left my soul behind me
In an old cathedral town

The joy that you find here you borrow
You cannot keep it long it seems
But gigolo and gigolette
Still sing a song and dance along
The boulevard of broken dreams

Marianne Faithfull's version is pure, love-brought death.

In a college town, with olive green all around, professors and skate punks rock SG Paul's wall of sound. There's an anarchist bookstore that has more than you'd look for.

A core of local folks wait for a late lift. There's often a great drift to the shop for the Wednesday night five-to-eight shift. The clerk at work is the prettiest gal in town. She cries during the video for "Allentown." She's a precocious socialist and willing to pal around. She's twice as cool as the kids at her high school. Every Wednesday after French Club she rides to work with a stuffed mastodon in the basket on her bicycle.

Voice Talent, a rapper, said, "If Noam Chomsky was from the Bronx he'd have been assassinated promptly."
The clerk said, "He was from the Bronx"
He said, "You know what I mean... ignoramuses"

"Oh boyee, what a pain this is," said the only paid employee, the manager. "I came for culture not accounting," and a girl put a flyer up above the water fountain. She carried clandestine two dollar mescaline in her blue collar mess tin plastered with stickers that said, "Food Not Bombs," "Sex Not Proms," and "Critical Mass."

That bastard, Voice Talent, snickered. He thought, "Nice graphics but that's just half-assed agitprop to piss off a traffic cop. Aww shucks. Can it be I'm too lazy for potlucks? If not my friends who am I willing to cook for," and they're chilling at the Anarchist Bookstore.

Will Barnes and Noble harm the global?
Will Amazon.com be around when gramma's gone, mom?

Voice Talent, the rapper, had a rapport with a stripper whore who he'd vote for long before he'd vote for Tipper Gore. He equipped the store with a credit card machine and put zines in their places. He said, "Take Back the Streets is more like Take Back Four Parking Spaces at the most," and left to host the Sunday Showcases. He was all dressed in tinsel, yo, but he couldn't convince his friends to go. They were like, "Voice Talent, you put on a minstrel show." He said, "Someone's psychotic. Someone took too much semiotics." "Furthermore," he thought, "Someone can tzuck my Tzadik," but VT was the opposite of TV.

He'd never accuse someone of being PC because it's so frigging dumb to say. The term arose on the Columbus Day Quincentennary when the republic was honest about the conquest and wouldn't party as previously promised. If someone uses a nonoffensive vocabulary that person is considerate, not PC. If someone has a heavy-handed agenda that person is narrow-minded, not PC. Unless you mean Providence College, PC is as meaningless as the president's apology for slavery. Maybe PE should be on the radio, not just in the African-American Norton Anthology.

All I want in life's a little bit of love
To take the pain away
Getting strong today
A giant step each day
All I want in life's a little bit of love
To take the pain away
Getting strong today
A giamt step each day
I've been told
Only fools rush in
Only fools rush in
But I don't believe
I don't believe
I could still fall in love with you

I will love you till I die
And I will love you all the time
So please put your sweet hand in mine
And float in space and drift in time
All the time until I die
We'll float in space, just you and I
And I will love you till I die
And I will love you all the time
So please put your sweet hand in mine
And float in space and drift in time
All the time until I die
We'll float in space, just you and I

Baby I love you today
I guess that's what you want
And I don't know where we are all going
Life don't get stranger than this
It is what it is
And I don't know where we are all going

I will love you till I die
And I will love you all the time
Everything happens today
And we're out here in space
And I don't know where we are all going
Baby I love you today
I guess that's what you want
And I don't know where we are all going

up the ramp of death
I can say that you moved me
in many rich directions, good and bad
born on a weekday
no experience
piece it together
showers you with oceans of a past
there's no time to grieve
get up
stop avoiding me...

stop avoiding me.

ONLY NICE THINGS
22:37 / 26.11.03
I've just finished decorating,
It was very irritating.
And I know they're going to come around tonight,
And I know they're going to say to me tonight,
"It makes the room look bigger."
"It makes the room look bigger."

So let's forget about the open-topped bus ride,
Standing tall on the town hall balcony.

It's about as likely as hen's teeth.
It's about as likely as hen's teeth.

And as the light gets dimmer,
I watch the chance get slimmer.

But I'm putting up a hook to hang my hopes upon.
there's a fellow coming round to stick the gas back on.
And if truth be told now the plumber's gone,
it makes the room look bigger.

I'm drawn towards the souvenir stalls,
I twirl around the key fob rack.
Well, it's all right for Nicholas and for Neil,
Yeah, well, how do you think that makes me feel?

And all the while I can see
I'm on the CCTV

Elderly lady at the bus stop
Thinks I'm going to eat her
And so to reassur her,
I ask her for the time.

And the sense of relief at my friendly tone
Reveals itself in her karmic moan.

You can wait twenty minutes and nothing comes along
And then all of a sudden three thugs rob your pension
Oh, there's generally one at twenty-five past
They come swinging round that corner,
They think they're Benny Goodman.

But I'm putting up a hook to hang my hopes upon.
there's a fellow coming round to stick the gas back on.
And if truth be told now the plumber's gone,
it makes the room look bigger.

Oh, tiptoe,
to the front row,
Of the Korn show,
With a submachinegun.

I think I'm jealous of your girlfriend,
Although she's just a girl that is your friend
I think I'm jealous of your girlfriend
She shares a special part of you

You said that she's one well to see
How deep you're in love with me
And intentions were not to get in between
But I see possibilities

And you say that you feel
I'm the best thing in your life
And I know it's real
I see it in your eyes
There's no reason for me, to even feel this way
I know you just enjoy her company

I think I'm jealous of your girlfriend,
Although she's just a girl that is your friend
I think I'm jealous of your girlfriend
She shares a special part of you
