It's out. I just bought mine. I'm reading it right now. I'll write a bit about it later on.

Okay...so, not a lot of major new stuff this issue. The story kinda moves along exactly how you think it would.

SPOILERS:

best lines of dialog:

John Sublime:
Hm. Liquid diamond lipstick. Heck of a good name for a band.

Angel:
Don't touch my wings, you pervert.

Jean:
We all have weird colds and infections. Something's happening, isn't it?

(Beast, getting up out of coma and walking over to the Cassandra Nova medical file)
Jeeeeeeen --- he's heeer...

U-Man: We know you're all defenseless.

Jean: DEFINE defenseless.

next issue: The Phoenix?

That plus the return of those weird creepy blonde girls who talk in unison.

Also, I sure wish they'd have Morrison do a letters page. That's one of the best things about a monthly comics format.

Motherfuck! I can't even afford a £2 comic. Arrgh!

Thoughts on the art?

I didn't mind it, but then I'm one of those people who doesn't really mind art in general. Though I have to admit I didn't like Lenil Yu's x-men. I prefer Van Sciver to Kordey, but neither one's a Frank. Van Sciver did a Flash special a few months ago called Iron Heights that was excellent.

The story seemed pretty run-of-the-mill to me. Am I expecting too much from an X-Men comic, even if it is written by Grant? I thought the interactino between Angel and Logan was a little stilted, though the scene at the end with Jean was excellent.

I'm off to read SKy Ape now. Billed as "the closest american equivalent to the work of Grant Morrison", I hope it's that good.

I like Allred's version of Wolverine better than this Kordey character.

And what is this 'Sky Ape' of which you speak?

Captain Zoom
19:57 / 28.11.01
Ahh, I just read it and it wasn't such hot shit. But then I got to the afterword, which I think is a review of the first collection. It compares the first Sky Ape series with Doom Patrol. It was amusing, but missing something.

I liked Kordey's art, but didn't like the way he draws Cyclops, Wolverine, or Emma. Everything else is fine. I liked some of the tricks he used to show passage of time, that one page early on with John Sublime's hand going down Emma's face was really nicely done.

I didn't expect much from this issue because I knew in advance that it was really a 'getting from point a to point b' sorta issue, and Germ Free Generation in general is stop-gap sorta story to begin with, relatively minor compared to the larger story. It's a structural unit more than anything else...

I'm psyched for the silent issue inside of Charles/Cassandra's mind, and the Imperial storyline....

So, Marvel claim that issue #121, the silent one, will be out Dec.19. You know what that means. Within the next 21 days, we'll have 2 more issues of this title. It makes me squeal with glee!

Oh, and just to further the connection between Cassandra Nova and John Sublime, notice how sublime likens everyhting not "third species" to livestock. Aren't similar things said about Cassandra when she's under lock and key. Or is it perhaps a bit of irony here? Sublime is trying to become the thing that Cassandra already is, but to her, he's just food.

"Squeel like a fan, boy!"

About time they got this show on the road. Somehow they've actually managed to get things back on track, and the issue scheduled for May of next year will actually come out in May of next year, meaning 12 issues will have shipped between May 2001 and 2002, as if nothing was ever late... weird.

I've said this before, buuuut....

Get the mailer, guys. 121 isn't out on the 19th, whatever it says at Marvel's site. The original shipping date has changed; it's now out on 2nd Jan.

Jeezy Creezy...Frank really does have a way of making most every other comic artist this side of Moebius and Brian Bolland seem rather pathetic, doesn't he?

Anyway, they swear up and down that 120 comes out the day after Christmas, and that 121 comes out two weeks into the new year, and 122 is out in the end of February. That is all quite reasonable, and it probably how it actually will turn out. The past two issues have all come out on time, and 120 and 121 are already in the can.

Thing which had me chuffed when I read it: The diner they visit is called the Bear's Den. This is (presumably) named after a town just outside Glasgow, where, amongst other things, I spent my formative years.

There was something about Kordey's art that I really liked. Facial expressions, each character seemed to be very well portrayed this issue. Very clunky and stylised.

Does anyone here think Grant intends for Xavier to have a permanent sex change? That would be cool.

That issue had me in Shivers... maybe it was the cold...

Yeah What I enjoyed most about the art was the panel use & layout... That bit with Emma frost & her bloody nose!!! That double page opening shot was outstanding as well...

Scott looked a bit week but I loved the shot to the "greek" statue... hmmmm some subtext here???

"here... a signed copy"

Now that stuff that's injected into... extracted out of that brain looks very much like the stuff Cassandra was injecting into her neck in part 2 of E is for extinction...
My guess is that Cassandra is using Sublime's ambition & resources...her Sentinal was going to disect & catalogue the captured mutants... why? And of course the recient massacure in Genoshaw would offer quite a stock of mutant organs for Sublime.

Oh and how Sublime knows about "the Hairy Guy" but not nessarily about "wolverine" or them being one & the same... Nice touch.

Jean enters Hanks mind to see an image of Barnel the Beak with a very Cassandra looking Charles in the background... then picks up the matter with Barnel himeself... Splendid!!!

I enjoyed the Wolverine parts...

"Went Red for a second."

The acid on the hand struck me as vaguely Fight Club... And he has always had a "thing" for younger female mutant sidekicks... Kitty Pride, Jubilee... & now Angel... maybe there's something to the "perv" thing...

I'm also loving how Wolverine has grown so casual about his healing factor... no more "Those razor's could have cut me to shreds if not for my mutant healing factor..."

Did that issus strike anyone else as filled with lots of sexual subtext??

Jean.... rocked of course.

"Today we'll be teaching"
"Define defenceless"

Excellent wake-up on The Beast's part!!!

wonder who else they have in that Morgue...

I'm working on New X-Men samples now. Here's some rough studies from my sketchbook:

(But pretty fuckin' good too!)

Nice Cameron. Send 'em out and get 'em in. I'd much rather see you drawing it than either of these two "fill-in" guys.

Thouhgt the art was a bit clunky in places, but nice in others.

The splash page would have had more impact with the u-men in the three smaller panels and Jean's emergence in the larger meta-panel.

--Edited to make it clear I meant the art in the comic, not the above--

Cameron, I think your sketches look great! I especially like the one of Jean. It really would be fantastic to see your style of work grace the pages of X-Men.

Have you submitted anything? If so, has Marvel given you any type of positive response?

Possible fiction suit! KING MOB 2?

Ronald Thomas Clontle
13:17 / 30.11.01
I noticed that too... I think it was just an error in the drawing or something. I doubt that they'd shave Cyclop's head, particularly since Frank draws his hair pretty well.

tracypanzer
13:26 / 30.11.01
They shaved his head so they could get to his eyes, maybe? Prepping him for some vivisection?

Tamayyurt
13:59 / 30.11.01
Yeah, and we all know he's not gonna get um, vivisected...and his hair's not gonna grow back in one issue. He's been acting weird lately so maybe he'll keep it? It goes with his whole acetic attitude.

Yeah, yeah, I know, I know. I posted these on a pro artists' message board with the disclaimer "I already know Cyclops is stiff is a board, so no one mention it..."

Should have done the same here.

It's just a sketch, dammit. Would never allow a final drawing to look like that...

MJ-12
09:27 / 01.12.01
yeah, but Cyclops should be stiff as a board. You got it right without thinking about it.
