Well, if Marvel and DC want to get the attention of people like me, who wanders into their local comic shop looking for a handful of regular titles, they're going to have to try harder than that. I've been mildly interested in X-Force after reading bits on the Barbelith Underground about it, but have never bothered to pick it up. And largely because it looks like, well, a crap kiddies' superhero comic. I can't be arsed to buy things ironically any more.

It's a Peter Milligan and Mike Allred comic. Kids like it, so do adults....

I don't think anybody round here buys comics ironically, Sax. They buy what they like, and, considering the vast majority of them are intelligent people, you could do worse than crediting them with some taste above and beyond a childish infatuation with spandex wish fulfillment...

I don't know, I just think Mike Allred's art is immensely pleasing aesthetically regardless of what's he's drawing, and sure, it's a lot like comics from the 60s, but it's a world away from the 'kids stuff' that has been aimed at actual kids in the past 20 years or so.

I definatly find myself more satisfied with a read of X-force then some other stuff I've been reading like say... Outlaw Nation. Why?

I thoroughly enjoy the artwork on both: major sell point for me...

Scripting is solid for both: another reason I continue to buy 'em.

Plot: it's here where I find X-force to work quite nicely... the pacing is as such that I forget that Last page is just a flip away & thus the cliffhangers just rock.

Overall story concept:

X-force isn't all that original in it's concept... though I find it hard to recall where said concept has been more successfully maintained.

X-force throws the conventions I've "grown-up" reading... on it's side... combined with that POP art quality ...BAM!!!

yeah mike allred isn't my favourite artist but as Pat points out he IS pop amd what style better for a comic that is both a the apothesis of pop culture and a more through exploration of the notion of superhero as popstar that Grant morrison has thus far managged-- and it comes out on ttime

I think the "childish look" of the thing is actually intended to give it a pop art kinda look. It is a comic about celebrity/commodity culture, afterall.

I think X-force worked best after the second issue... The nature of the pacing seems to play with the serialised cliff-hanger endings...
& yeah... I think the POP art feel is intentonal... consider also the quality of the coloring & the use of the occasional Photo background... particularly a scene of U-Go-girl looking over the ocean... nice touch.

you know, frankly, I really hated that. It just doesn't mesh with Mike Allred's line art, and Laura Allred's coloring... it looks gimmicky and tacked on to my eyes.

It's a cool idea, but I don't think it is an appropriate match on X-Force...

I guess the majority of X-Force readers nowadays are not the same old fanboys looking for spandex fulfillment. Because that's not what this title is about.

It's MTV's 'Real World' with superstar mutants. And it's fucking good. Sometimes, most of times better than New X-Men.
