I have INVISIBLES (TPs), JLA, MARVEL BOY, the ANIMAL MAN trade, the DOOM PATROL trade, KILL YOUR BOYFRIEND, and MYSTERY PLAY. I also have a few of the AZTEK comics.

Are there any back issues worth searching out? I have a few comics shops I can visit to check if so.

Otherwise...
Are there any graphic novels that are a "must have" for any Morrison collection?

Much of The Grant's best stuff goes uncollected. The DOOM PATROL and ANIMAL MAN runs only get better from the point where the trades leave off: and then there's the mighty, mighty FLEX MENTALLO...

ST. SWITHIN'S DAY is pretty obscure, little-mentioned, but by God it's an ace piece of writing, with lovely Paul Grist artwork. Might be hard to find, but buy it if you can.

Zeneith is being re pronted with is very good, filling in Animal man and Doom Patrol is a must. There are some of the best things you will ever read.
Arkham Asylam is very protentious but good.
But my advice is track down grants Kid Eternity. I love it and the artwork is amazing

DARE is well worth getting, though apparently it's quite rare. I'm still chuffed that I tripped over a copy in a charity shop.

Yeah, 'Dare' is worth searching for, as is the final, as yet uncollected, volume of 'Zenith'. 'Steed & Mrs Peel' is interesting but hardly essential Morrison reading. 'St Swithin's Day' and 'Kill Your Boyfriend' are absolute gems, little slices of Morrison-doing-kitchen-sink-drama; 'New Adventures of Hitler' is too, really, but not as well realised.

<deep breath>

I found 'Kid Eternity' a little confusing, possibly as a result of the muddy artwork (sorry, Uncle R). Arkham Asylum I liked, but it seems very much of its time. 'Doom Patrol' is near-consistently excellent (my favourite's the one-off Miller pastiche featuring the Beard Hunter...).

Some of the 2000AD/Revolver curiosities are worth a look: 'Big Dave' is very funny, 'Really & Truly' (apparently written on ecstasy) is light and fluffy; 'Bible John', like the text pieces he did for Skin Two, is something of an acquired taste.

'Flex Mentallo' is still my absolute favourite, I think.

You'll be a very lucky man if you manage to track it down. I owe my first born in a nasty deal to get all 4 issues.

Ganesh is speaking the truth, Flex is a very, very wonderful thing.

Oh my god? He did that? That story kicked ass! Best action force story I ever read. Even better than the transformers cross over.

Yes. Invisible Al's got my copy at present. But I've seen a few copies in Waterstones (Manchester).

If anyone's after the Flex Mentallo set let me know before the end of next week. I got mine from a comic shop near my parents place just before Christmas 1999 (I was reading that while everyone was outside dancing like twats to 'Millenium' and 'Disco 2000'). At the time he had more, so I could always check and see whether he's still got them...

My favorite Morrison obscurity is the eight-pager he did with Frank Quitely in "Weird War Tales" #3. Sebastian O is also worth finding, also of its time but pretty impressive when you consider his later work. The best thing about Lovely Biscuits are his plays, which are great; the short stories are fairly abysmal.

And for completeness' sake...

There's the collected "Legends of the Dark Knight: Gothic" (it was the very first story arc, back when it was the "edgy" Batman title). It has a dark, very Morrison-ish feel to it (no doubt aided by Klaus Janson's art). I liked it.

And then thereĀ“s "Mistery Play", which I didn't like much (I got the HC when it came out, back when I used to buy everything Vertigo produced. Shame on me... ). Very metaphysical, very pretentious... and very boring...

'Batman: Gothic' was that with the gangster that couldn't die going round killing all his own cronies before being sucked into hell at the end? Hmmm, didn't think much of that...

For those that are interested, there are several issues of Flex Mentallo 2-4 in Mega City COmic's cheapo bin in Camden, London. There are no issue 1s. If anyone knows where I can get a spare issue 1 I would be very grateful!

Which Storm Shadow story was that?

Sebastian O was good but I can't find it anywhere.

the storm shadow story was from action force monthly 2 where ss goes after the general who tortured his fellow captive to death during 'nam (this synopsis makes it sound a lot less interesting than it was)

and one for those looking for something truly obscure-- morrison did a strip in the comic relief charity comic...

I really liked Sebastian O.

The Weird War Tales story is classic Morrison. Very good.

Skull Kill Crew was fun and should be pretty easy to find.

I have only dim memories of Big Dave and Really & Truly: from the former, Dave being perplexed by the clumsily assembled robot double of Prince Charles ('Youre...trying to...confuse...me!"), and the latter being written largely in Nadsat.

Beyond that, nuffink.

Is it possible for anyone to make photocopies?

morrison + millar's run on flash (#130-141) is also worth checking out, if you're a true fan-boy. sort of similar to skrull kill krew + aztek: playing with the genre's formalities, a fondness for the characters (esp. obscure villains, the scottish mirror master shows up), demonstrating how good corporate comics can be with the right writers.

for my money the best storyline is the middle, "the human race" (#136-138). struck me as the possibly the most overt structural political stuff I've seen GM do- if you read it like I did, the race is a metaphor for global capitalism. + some nice GM flourishes- run-ins with childhood imaginary friends, cooperative effort on a global scale, etc.

I enjoyed DOOM PATROL # 34-44. It's chocked full of interesting stuff. Hand of Glory(Sugar tongs), Wallace Sage's relation to Flex Mentallo, creepy mechanical bugs, warring alien cultures. These issues are pretty eay to find in any back issue box. If you are desperate ebay has them all of the time.

Post issue 38 is easy to find in a back issue bin, before that it gets tricky...

Didn't Morrison also write Vampirella at some point?

Was it any good?

He and Millar both did issues of Vampirella. I read one or two issues of Morrison's Vampirella and much like Morrison's issues of Spawn, you would never guess Grant Morrison wrote them. They are nothing special. Not bad. Just nothing special.

I did like the Morrison/Millar run on The Flash though. I liked their Flash much better than the fanboy frenzied Mark Waid run. I may just re-read those sometime. The did real good Animal-Man-ish Mirror Master story.

Just finished earth2. It's ok but read someone else's copy, save that cash.

I really enjoyed Morrison's JLA run, but I get the feeling it was very of its time. Yeah, it's only a year or so later, but there's something about pants and men in capes that seems real dated post Authority, Planetary, X Men movie, Matrix, etc. They just look a bit spazzy. The characters are all walking, talking archetypes, fresh from the Jungiasphere....and you might dig them, but I'm as faddish as Morrison and I haven't picked up a copy of JLA from the pile in about six months. The stories take place in the realm of the Gods, everything is numinous and significant - it's always armageddon; that sort've deal.

But I think Grant got a bit bored by the time he got around to the last story arc. Which was a bit of a shame. In fact, I'm gonna email him and tell him not to pull any of that shit with New X Men.

"Dear Grant,

I kill cunts....."

Earth 2 is okay but storywise underwhelming. Sort of Grant harking back to the pre-Crisis days. The idea of this reality being one where heroes always win and Earth 2 being one where they always loose is nice. I always liked Grant's characterisation of Superman, cool and charismatic.

I'm looking at Flex Mentallo selling on e-bay, and I just saw some mint copies go for $40, which comes to $10 an issue. If people are willing to pay this kind of cash for flimsy back issues, why the devil hasn't Flex Mentallo been collected???
