Tried to post this on the previous FF thread but it seems to have vanished in the last purge.

There's some really good art there. Nice to know Morrison wrote the mini-series more or less accordingly to the element each character represents.

Whats going on here? How did the concept of thrones attached to helmets with strange neuro-wire thingies become such a cliche? And why is it showing up in everything Grant writes?

You know, I was pissed off that cause of Milligan/Morrison I was going to read X books. Now it looks like I'm going to be reading the F4. God whats next, Where will this horror end?

They're just iconic characters - profoundly important to Americas festering fantasy life. I think it's terribly cool to read them.

My thoughts exactly. That's why I think Morriosn wil never retire from comics before doing something using Spider-Man etc and even Superman.

And I know this is not like him but I really liked the grim and gritty atmosphere this FF series may have.

There's something creepy about the art to this FF mini, and I'm sure the vibe of Morrison's script will mirror the visuals.

I never thought of the Fantastic Four as being "spooky"...... Until now.

Why aren't people spunking over this a little bit more. Can't wait till next Thursday, when I get my hands on the first ish.

well, it goes something like: "I'm still embarassed about having a realtively worthless 250 issue run of the FF starting at #99 in my garage."

I wouldn't want it any other way. And I'm glad a guy like Morrison (who reportedly doesn't like that much spookiness in superheroes) is doing it this way. I believe after the mini lots of people will claim for a Morrison run on FF.

ps: are you OniPress' Jamie Rich?

Maybe because people forgot a bit about Marvel Knights. But Morrison's ideas for FF created quite a big fuzz sometime ago. Was'nt it on a good position at Diamond charts?

I saw an advance copy at a comic shop today...damn, it looks awesome! Jae Lee just keeps getting better. You must buy this.

I bought the issue today and it is classic, it is the best F4 comic I have ever read, even though the only things I have to compare to are the Jim Lee issues.

The Jae Lee art is wonderful and makes the F4 look so utterly spooky and Doctor Doom actually looks cool.

The writing is as good as you would expect from Grant, even though the story (which I wont go into) seems familar, you actually feel sorry for The Thing.

The 4 are shown as realistic people rather than a happy happy smiley family or legendary untouchable infallible archetypes, which makes you actually be interested in them.

The story focuses less on the mad ideas and more on the characters.

You should definately buy it.

How did you buy it early?

Well, anything would look like gold in comparison. The original Lee-Kirby Fantastic Four comics are truly brilliant, some of the best superhero comics ever produced. Pick up some reprints.

Well I went down to my retailer today to complain about being over charged for my Cerebus book and he gave me the sneak peak issues for F4 and X Force.

Vince is a swell guy.

I've got a few old Kirby/Lee FF's. Evertime I go through my comics to box up my more recent buys or find a good re-read I always end up busting out the old FF's and marveling at the art.

It doesn't officially come out until Thursday.

You should listen to da Cam Man: Marvel has released a B&W thick and cheap TP. Although some may like the psychedelic colours.

I'd also recommend the Byrne run on FF.

The last run i enjoyed on FF was walt simmonson's.

Bur however bad you think byrne is/was he does ont compare to the soul sucking awfulness of Tom Defalco's run on FF.

And, as I'm sure other people round here'll tell you, the name's "Janieon". The board got it wrong.

All wrong.

My local had sold out by 5pm and like a good little junkie I went to the cd store begging for a hit. One issue, we gots one issue for you.

I'm not sure I like it. why do Alicia's models animate?

That's her "power." Her dad was the old FF villain the Puppet Master, who made living sculpture-puppets of the FF.

<off topic>Go to 'my profile' at the top of the page, then to 'View/Update Profile', and you can change your publically displayed name to whatever you like. Then you won't have to keep telling everyone, will you?</off topic>

I've tried this, it won't work.

The board absolutely refuses to recognize my real name.

This saddens me, and makes me feel the world is wrong.

Sort of, Cameron. At least it was weird sciFi, something that suits the FF fine. But I don't know if it would survive a new reading. Our memories of the comics are indeed always better than the books themselves.

I got the comic yesterday.

I like it a lot. Slower than I expected but good.

Two of the best Marvel titles last year were The Sentry by Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee and Marvel Boy. 1234 feels a lot more like The Sentry than Marvel Boy. Jae Lee's work is better for a slower story. I love his FF. Its a beautiful comic.

I really like the interaction between Sue and Johnny. (What little there was.) I can't wait for the Johnny Storm issue.

although its quite obvious that morrison will not be able to use his now infamous, salacious F4 proposal....there is a creepy, even sinister undertone to the book. jae lee's art only adds to that atmosphere i think.

Grant M's idea of the incestuous Fantastic Four wasn't meant to be explicit anyway was it? I thought I read somewhere that he was referring to the incestuous undertones of the families relationship as a backdrop for their interactions. He wasnt actually going to show any hardcore Storm on Storm action.

I think the incestuous underpinnings are definitely present in the story, the references to them being "trapped in this mausoleum" of the Baxter Building.

One of the things I liked about the issue was the way the relationships between the characters are spot on as I remember them, but somehow, probably due to the artwork, it takes on a slightly claustrophobic and unpleasantly creepy tone. Like the bit where Johnny Storm is winding up The Thing, I remember that they used to interact like that from when I used to read it as a kid, but in the context of Grant's story it comes across as totally uneccessary and cruel, whereas it's always been portrayed as harmless banter.

There's all these highly suspect disfunctioal elements to the FF that've always been present in the comic, and I like the way Grant is working with that.

Yeah, it really does my head in the way people misunderstood Grant's comments re the Freudian dynamic underpinning the Four's relationships.

The Oedipus complex (if it exists) does not result in little Jamieon getting it on with his Mother!!!

Well, alright, sometimes.......

well....allow me to clarify. i did not think that we would actually SEE any "hardcore" action between sue and her brother. i have even debated with people who at first thought that this would be one big "Caligulistic" romp! i never thought grant would go that far. perhaps i just worded my previous post wrong. it happens. i am simple.
