Well, considering that watching their loved ones in videotaped messages is something astronauts in future longe range space missions will very much probably actually do, it's kinda of hard avoind that cliché, specially given the time restraints to character background in 60min made-for-TV specials.
Also, I don't recall the news about the two surviving astronauts having a precise publishing date, so I imagine they could have been kept in isolation for a couple of months, while a cover story about a "survival pod"-ish device that brought them close enough to Earth to be rescued. Anyway, in a show like Doctor Who, one is always safe to assume the government knows all kinds of interesting ways to cover a story that they don't want out.
Finally, regarding Dollhouse, yeah, that was a bummer... |
