Does anyone know any fables?
Here's one I wrote in High School:
Long ago, when the Great Spirit created the Earth and all her creatures, the first bird was the Ostrich.
"Ostrich" the Spirit said, "You are the first bird. As such, I will grant you your heart's desire, but you must sacrifice something in return. What do you wish?"
"I wish to be King of all the birds that come after me." said the Ostrich, "I want to be the biggest, and run the fastest, and crush a lion's skull with a single kick."
"Very well," the Spirit said, "so what will you give me in return?"
The Ostrich spread his long, cumbersome, ungainly wings.
"I will give you these." he said,"they don't seem to be doing me very much good."
So the Spirit gave the Ostrich his heart's desire and took away his wings, leaving only stubby appendages to aid his balance. The Ostrich was pleased.
Years later, King Ostrich was grazing in a field, and two of his subjects flew overhead.
"Good morning, Your Majesty," they greeted him, "Would you like to come fly with us to the ocean? The view is lovely this time of year."
"No, thank you." King Ostrich replied. "I am content for now."
He hid his face in the sand so no one could see the tears in his eyes. |
