Stuff I like:
The Smiths.
A nice cup of tea.
Chillin' with my buds.
YOU! Maybe.
Curling up with a good book.
Correcting the spelling of others.
Having my spelling corrected! I like to learn.

Stuff I don't like:
Harry Potter! Somebody had to have the guts to say it. Harry Potter sucks, dudes.

What I need to do today:
Finish typing up my notes for English class.
Wash my car.
Write to my penpals (2).
Go for a walk. Too much time studying; I need to get some fresh air.

Maybe I can take nature photos on my walk and post them here for you to enjoy.

Everybody have an awesome day.

I like your name: brb. It's fun to pronounce. It could signify anything from shivering to a belch to machinegun fire.

I still like the Harry Potter books AND movies. No shame in that...

Hi grant! I sure do. We had a scotch tasting recently and it was immensely enjoyable to sit down with a bowl of Ashton's 'Rainy Day' blend after my eleventh straight taste.

Nature photos to come soon!

Hello, brb. Do you like the Magnetic Fields? Do you have a favourite Magnetic Fields song? I've just got back from seeing them, not that that is relevant to this thread.

I am back from my nature walk, which turned into a picnic. I was tired and a bit bored after washing my car and working on my notes, so I decided to take some snacks and music and a novel to the park.

There were turtles, water lilies, seed pods, and dragonflies in different colors. It was lovely, and I feel suitably refreshed.

As you can see, iamus, my lunch today consisted of a sandwich, a chocolate cupcake, lemonade, and tea.

My favorite scotch is probably Lagavulin, if by favorite you mean what I'd tend to order, rather than what I think is the best scotch I've ever had. I appreciate the fine qualities of many liquors that I wouldn't necessarily crave on a regular basis. Lagavulin makes me think of lapsang souchong, and for me that is a good thing.

Haus, I am not familiar with these "Magnetic Fields". I tend to avoid anything that would imperil one's electronic devices. But describe them, and perhaps I will investigate.

Les Champs Magnétiques (The Magnetic Fields) is a novel by André Breton and Philippe Soupault. I like listening to songs about it. What's your favourite book, brb? Do you like to hear songs about it?

Is that park the Japanese garden I've heard of not too far from Hollywood? The lotuses are lovely.

HAUS: OMG I was just reading Blanchot whose name totally begins with B. Psychic twinz! Is there any music about Blanchot? I don't know, but if there was, I bet it would be cool!

GRANT: That park is not near Hollywood, and I don't actually know of a Japanese garden near Hollywood. It disturbs me that there may be a garden I don't know about. Can you check with your source and let me know what you find? I will happily document the garden for you in return.

That's "near Hollywood" from an across-the-country perspective. I have a friend who works in Studio City somewhere (I think) and enjoys going to the Huntington for special events. She (and I, for that matter) were both quite fond of festivals at the Morikami when she lived less across the country and more across the county.

Bon festival's coming up - are you planning anything for that?

Joking aside then, that does look like you've had a lovely day. The pictures are great (I only wish we had turtles over here, but I doubt they agree with the weather). It's a bloody godsend to be within good distance of spaces like that. It might actually be a cry to have a thread where we can all post photos of local parklands and wildlife. I don't have any today, but may well do that, next time I get a chance.

Your post actually inspired me to do the same today, because I've not properly been out and about for around a week. I ran into a couple of ducks doing their thing, climbed a few trees, crawled through some bushes and walked along the back of a massive moss-covered pipe, that snakes through the trees and undergrowth, funneling a stream under the nearby crematorium and out into the River Cart.

Will definitely try Lagavulin next time I get the chance. It's an Islay, right? I'm a big fan of Islay malts. Laphroiag's probably my favourite at the moment, but have you tried Ardbeg? It can have a funny, almost hospital scrubs-like taste, but it's a full and quite complex whiskey that's definitely worth checking out if you haven't already. Truth be told, I'm a little behind on my knowledge due to ongoing poorness, so if there's anything else you'd recommend, I'd certainly be interested to hear.

GRANT: I believe I have missed my local Obon festivals, but there is a Lotus Festival with dragon boat races this weekend which I will attempt to visit, if I find time.

The Huntington is a fair bit of a drive out from Los Angeles, a little too far for casual visits at current gas prices, but it is wonderful and has a museum and tea house in addition to many lovely gardens. The park I went to was Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area which is rather closer. It has spectacular city views and lots of picnic areas. I should go barbecue something, I no longer have a grill at home.

IAMUS: I recommend to you Bowmore 17 yr., an Islay that tasted to me not at all like the notes given on the page I've linked to. At a recent party it was a unanimous hit, and was described as having an almost coffeelike richness of aroma, slightly bitter but appealing. Of course, it was the eight or ninth scotch we'd tasted and we were onto dessert by that point, so maybe we were just tasting the insides of our own mouths.

I have not tried Ardbeg but I am, surprisingly, interested to find out what hospital scrubs taste like, given the option of not having to put actual hospital scrubs into my mouth.

I am pleased that MY THREAD ABOUT ME has inspired people who are not me to seek the solace of nature's bosom.

I am now going to go walk, and run as much as I can, for twenty minutes, in order to create a caloric deficit, and toughen the fibers of my physical being.

Time me.

Go!

Bowmore 17yr is a lovely whisky. Got it as a present last Christmas. Bit long off the tastebuds to describe with any detail, but YOU have good taste!

I am back. Good lord, it is hot out there already. If I were not in such superb physical shape, my four minutes of running, scattered through sixteen minutes of brisk walking would have shattered me.

I richly deserve the banh mi I am about to go get.

IAMUS: I urge you to actively cultivate the friendship of people wise enough to think of gifts such as the Bowmore. You may have friends more generous, but are their gifts as well-chosen? I doubt it.

Thankfully, it was a gift from my father. Certainly a case where the inability to choose ones family is a bit of a boon.

What was the most interesting thing you saw on your rualk?

The child is the father of the man, iamus.

The most interesting thing I saw was some strange dragonfly mating ritual in which a few of them would slam into each other in mid-air with a really loud crashing noise and then fly around in a furious ball of buzzing and wings. It was a bit terrifying, actually.

I have just returned from the lotus festival. There were:
dogs
dragon boats
parrots
cranes
dancers
shave ice
cacti
geese
and parasols.

It was totally awesome, dude.

The bass player (and an awesome guitarist of whom I wasn't able to get very good photos) stayed onstage for all the different bands that I saw, and played other things or just grooved a bit and grinned when not playing anything. Pretty adorable.

Did you notice that there actually was not a single lotus at the lotus festival? The beds were torn up for replanting. They hadn't done anything with them since the original planting in, I think, the 1920s? I look forward to having them back.

Today I am taking a QUIZ on Gerard Manley Hopkins, among others. Wish me luck!
