That horse is lovely! I think I just must like freaky creatures. As evidenced by my passion for Aye-aye's.

Can we invite this gentleman to Barbelith? I think it would be, well, the right thing to do.

Drugs to dogs, spunk to fish.

He'd fit right in.

A goth who leads his girlfriend around with a dog lead and collar was stopped from getting on a bus amid fears for passenger safety, a bus firm confirmed.

Elfin safety gone mad? Dom/sub discrimination?

Operations director for Arriva Yorkshire, Paul Adcock, said: "Arriva takes any allegation of discrimination very seriously and have interviewed the driver regarding Mr Graves' claims.

"Our primary concern is passenger safety and while the couple are very welcome to travel on our buses, we are asking that Miss Maltby remove her dog lead before boarding the bus.

"It could be dangerous for the couple and other passengers if a driver had to brake sharply while Miss Maltby was wearing the lead."

The company said it was writing to Mr Graves "to apologise for any distress caused by the way this matter was handled".

Ooh, that's that cleared up...

You know what? I have less than no sympathy for pervs who act like that. Yes, you have every right to engage in the consenting adult activities of your choice. Yeah, you're a good little subbie. Oooh, who's a big scary Dom. Now fuck off. The world owes you tolerance, respect, and not sticking its collective nose up your arse. The world does NOT owe you an uncritical unconsenting audience for your activities. Fucking irresponsible selfish baby-dom douchebags make me sick.

Wow! I actually resisted the impulse, and the puns have allowed me to divinate the secret horror behind the search term. WITHOUT LOOKING IT IN THE FACE.

Damn. I hope they don't get Keanu Reeves to play me in the movie.

By way of an apology for recent, disruptive behaviour, might I suggest a look at the 'Spider-Man Rebooted' thread on Byrne Robotics?

The laughter, and the tears, begin on about page 42, and from this point don't really let up.

I know this sort of thing (linking-ish, to other message boards for comic purposes) is against Barbelith policy; it's a fair point, but I'd argue that, in this case, those guys have gone somewhere beyond comedy.

There's everything in there (the raging paranoia, the love interests, the sense of an old god who's nearly dead, etc) that you'd need to write a great novel, or play. JB as King Lear? Maybe. Certainly, Thomas Hardy, if he was alive today, might have got a kick out of the dialogue.

I'm over-selling this, I suppose.

But it's basically both beautiful, and terrible.

Martin Amis is paid £80k for working at Manchester University. "Eighty grand?" I hear you say, "that's not an awful lot of money for a professor."

But he only has to work 28 hours a year.

WTF?!

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy

Presumably the thinking is -- and I'm envious, even if it's totally unfair -- that he should spend the majority of his time writing so that he can be a writer-in-residence, right? And when creative writing applications go up 50% when he shows up, that signals to the university that their dubious plan is going to benefit them; prestigious writer writes at their university *and* brings in students.

Hah, prestigious writers on CW courses are bullshit as everyone knows. Being able to write good novels doesn't mean you know how to teach it. Really - this is an exaggeration - what you need to be a CW teacher is lots and lots of time, contacts, patience, and enthusiasm for books and yr students ...

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy
22:30 / 30.01.08
Oh, as a survivor of the academic creative writing program world, sure, totally. But that isn't necessarily how the university funding type people consider things. I would imagine the department in question hates Amis and the whole thing.

Is that a "WTF can science really do that?" or a "WTF would people really want to do that?" If the latter, there really are quite a few good reasons...
