Damn spoiler tag. Oh technology, what hast thou dunst?

Seeing as it's not really a spoiler, more speculation, and how Jeph Loeb has already 'spoiled' The Ultimates (zing!), I may as well tell you that, according to authoritative sources within my head, the Black Panther is none other than... Colonel Abdul al-Rahman.
Last seen being dragged away by SHEILD medics after 'dying' at the hands of Ultimate Cap', my guess is that the former Liberators leader recovered. Cap' reached out to him as another scrawny kid turned into a super-soldier thyroid case, the two became friends and sprung him from SHIELD custody to join the Ultimates as Black Panther.

The Ultimates Vol 3 has been in production for three years.

Issue #4 is now delayed until June.

Surely Ultimate Black Panther be Nick Fury?

It's taken me ten or fifteen drinks to come to this conclusion, but Jeph Loeb has the juice on tap naturally, I suppose, in that wonderful mind of his.

al-Rahman? Ehhh. I don't think I'd like that outcome. Not at all.

And after the conclusion of Ultimate Power, I don't see how Nick Fury could be BP.

Not 'till June, huh? Maybe a few more months in the shop will save the issue from sucking.

Ultimatum is hopefully the bottom of Loeb's downward trajectory. It must be.

New York floods and Nightcrawler drowns but Angel doesn't. Nightcrawler can teleport and he drowns. Angel has huge wings and he FLIES UNDERWATER.

ah, I'm going to stop there, retelling the story was funny once, a second time it's just kind of depressing.

Seriously, steal all the March on Ultimatum shit, it's fascinating and truly has to be seen to be believed. For the love of god don't pay for it though.

What? How?

(you are Flyboy in a jokesuit aren't you?)

i mean how it is the "end of the world" and a major villain's big attack on the "universe" but here the deaths etc seem just for shock as opposed to the real feeling of dread and apocalypse that grant makes us feel in final crisis.

what's a 'jokesuit;?

My god, you're right. Every single apocalyptic superhero storyline ever is ripping off Grant Morrison's current series.

Angel has huge wings and he FLIES UNDERWATER.

That should have been followed with a scene where Angel sits on top of a building and cleans all the water out of his feathers for two hours. That's what my birds do after a bath.

well, as some of us have complained over in the final crisis thread, that's a storyline that has happened in every single comic ever, about twice a year, which is why final crisis doesn't feel as special as it's supposed to.

loeb sucks

I can't argue with that. I thought I was done reading this shit, but the guys at the comics shop stuck Ultimatum in my box anyway and in some confused series of events I bought it instead of telling them where to stick it.

I slogged through the whole first story arc of Ultimates 3 just to see if there was any payoff for the dramatic buildup, and when I was done, swore Never Again!

has he really been given a license to kill all these Ultimates characters? it'd be kind of cool if the Ultimate universe became kind of like X-Statix with a high rate of hero turnover every month.

The crap, it burns!

So all the heroes bar Spidey are going to kill one another fighting Magneto again. Hasn't Ultimate Magneto already tried to take over the Ultimate world more times than non-Ultimate Magneto? Isn't it what happens in the Ultimate issues when they have their equivalent of the non-Ultimate marvel comics where the X-Men play baseball or Spidey just puts up some shelves?

In fact, wasn't that the plot of the just finished Ultimates 3?

Agreed that 'Ultimatum' #1 was not good. On the other hand, it must be difficult to argue with Loeb's numbers.

It would sadden me to rehearse those here (suffice it to say that with Loeb in control, Hulk is now smashing in a way that Hulk has not done in years) but Loeb is doing big business for Marvel at the moment.

So, following the recent parting of ways between Loeb and the 'Heroes' people, it seems we can all expect to see many more heart-rending tales from Loeb in the future.

Ultimatum #2: So bad it's actually pretty good. Killing characters that nobody cares about is fun-neee! I especially liked Reed Richards/Namor: "I know you didn't have anything to do with it but I'm still going to blame you!" That kind of dialogue normally only exists in the parodies!

I admit, that there was the glimmer of a good idea buried in painful-to-read crap with the Cap arrives in Valhalla to get Thor's back schtick.

WTF is the point of the Ultimate U books anymore?

But why was Cap there? In the last issue, he was conscious and lucid enough to ask about his teammates. How'd he die?

And why have the Shield uniforms become 616 uniforms? They used to be military fatigues.

I presume it's because once Iron Man gets him to the hospital he's near to death. Otherwise it doesn't pay to think about it. I recommend 4th Letter for their series on each of Loeb's Ultimates issues, though they sometimes have difficulty outcrazying the already crazy.

I skimmed through Ultimatum, and it was so bad that I can never unsee it. Hell, I can't even unthink it. Not only is the execution of this, from the nonsensical plot, characterization, writing, anything having to do with Loeb, not to mention art that generally felt needless... but the very conception of this comic sickens me. Gah, words not working after 36 hours of no sleep, but this comic is so bad that someone should take away all of Loeb's writing implements and tools, force him to relearn human language and thought processes. I can't even conceive of what Marvel editor thought this was a good thing, even as a What If? it's a steaming pile of shit that makes my brain want to vomit. But as an actualy comic that's supposed to have continuity? In a line that was at one point aimed at children? Madness. Pure madness.

Hell, as a physical object (though I assure you, I couldn't bear to pay for this), it cheapens the very nature of physical reality. I'd imagine that a stack of Ultimatum is sitting in some comic shop, exuding a foul miasma that is polluting our world.

Now time for sleep, and maybe when I wake up, I can purge the memory that this comic existed.

I agree. I read/skimmed Ultimatum in the store... soo awful. Although I like the idea of the Red Hulk just as a fun/dumb/popcorn movie idea that I know is fun at a 12-year old sort of primal level, Loeb's writing has been pretty piss poor for several years now, so this is really no surprise.

However, now you have a Millar-written, Pacheco-drawn Ultimates to look forward to, to hopefully cleanse the palate. And the rotating art teams and balls-to-the-wall superhero teamup 'event' style Millar is aiming for might be a fun answer to the decompressed style of Millar's previous ultimates. Plus, more Bendis Ultimate Spider-Man is always a good thing, and that new artist LaFuente is aces.

oh, and Wolverine is disintegrated. That'll last, right?
