Well, the Heroes universe has always been laughably small--think Hiro-Nathan, or Peter-Isaac. Or Peter being Charles DeVeaux's nurse, or Hiro meeting DL at the car crash (I'm sure there are others). So Sylar magically appearing in the middle of the road just in time to meet the Wonder Twins is absurdly implausible. But I can't think of a reason why it simply couldn't (or shouldn't) happen. Which makes it better than some of the other things that have happened this season. Like:
Why was Sylar left alone with Candace, and why isn't he being pursued now that she's dead? Do the RADIOACTIVE ISOTOPES used in season 1 no longer work?
And how on earth was Claire even put in a position to meet West? Bennett was, after all, the man trusted with tracking and cataloguing Heroes (of which there aren't many), and then decides to move his family and lonely, insecure jailbait daughter into one of the maybe 5 school districts in the US featuring a hunky young Hero?
I can't but feel a little sorry for the writers--the idea that they'd shift focus every season to a new story arc was what made super-duper heroes like Peter and Sylar and Hiro possible. But now that they're not dead, I'm at a loss to see how the characters are going to be written. They've each done the "Hero finds himself unable to use his powers" arc, and now Peter and Hiro are doing the "Hero is on soundstage B and refuses to come back to main set" bit. Short going back and forth between the can't/won't use powers within the context of the main plot, there's not a lot for them to do, is there? Except continue to take up screen time.
But we'll see. I don't watch enough TV to begin to make adequate comparisons, and I know this isn't The Wire, and that the entire season including all new characters won't be subtly and perfectly mapped out in episode 1. So maybe they're going somewhere darker or more interesting than some random guy who scares little girls. Thanks to the magic of NBC Video Rewind, I'll keep watching (at least as long as they continue not to block it at work). |
