Personally, whenever I buy a book I do my utmost to keep it pristine. However, me being me, my utmost is never really enough (and, well, my "pristine" is probably a few levels lower than most people's "pristine"), and they always get knackered in some fashion or other. Sometimes it really bugs me, sometimes I don't care- it usually depends on the book. But sometimes the damage is personalising- I know where all the creases and folds, and battered bits at the corners (well, that one's easy, they're at the fucking corners, obviously), and beer spots etc are on my copy of Ruby And The Stone Age Diet, one of my all-time favourite books. I love it for its familiarity, both in content and form. I'm sure if I picked up a copy of a different edition, or worse yet, SOMEONE ELSE'S copy of the same edition, with all THEIR particular bits of damage, it just wouldn't be quite the comfort read it usually is.
(Mind you, I've just looked on abebooks.com, and the edition I've got's now going for $250 mint. Maybe I'm stupid, but I'd rather have the book). |
