I watched this yesterday and loved it. The animation was amazing. some landscape shots looked photorealistic. The way the rats moved (when they were being rats) was incredibly true to life. The wet rats managed to be both adorable and realistic.
I have to say (imho) Brad Bird may be the greatest animator working in the US at this time. One thing I heard (and liked) was when he was creative consultant on the Simpsons he promoted the use of interesting and cinematic shots, moving away from the dull, traditional choice of shots: so a wide shot setting the scene followed by close ups for the characters' conversation, moving towards more adventurous placing of the "camera", saying that while the animation was cheap, it didn't have to look cheap. |
