I always assumed that the people who are observed as 'being nuts' would have some type of explanation for their unusual behavior, other than just 'being nuts'.
Not always, dude. I mean at the time, yeah, you could probably come up with a reasonable interpretation of what you were doing and why you were doing it, but sometimes you just come out of it, look back, and say "oh yeah I was pretty nuts right there."
However I agree that terms like being "nuts" are hardly unproblematic and should be used with caution, especially in a language-aware space such as Barbelith strives to be. Even if one self-identifies as mentally ill and has diagnoses and bits of paper and fol-de-rols to back this up, it's a bit difficult to prove that you have mental health needs over the net.
