Boboss - what about sedum matting of the type that is used for green roofs? I believe it can be laid on the ground as well. It might be prohibitively expensive, cos it seems to require several sub-layers for drainage, growing medium, etc., but it would provide a softer surface without having to break up the paving? You could have a central strip of that, with big pots and planters at the edges growing courgettes, flowers, herbs etc.

Thanks, dudes.

We're not going to put pebbles everywhere, just around the edges. There is a practical reason for this, but it would be quite difficult to explain. Needless to say there are aesthetic and health & safety dimensions to our thinking.

Otherwise it's pots and paving paint all the way.

Excitement.

Oh, and nice suggestion, Kit Kat, but I think our budget just wouldn't stretch that far. Might be a consideration for the future, though.
