YES. I KNOW.

Uhuh. And you've just made it worse. Both at the same time.

"The Hits" is playing "20 Best Pop Songs" or something like that. I feel infected. They crawl. Eurgh.

IAMUS I HATES YOU FOREVER!!! (not really)

Its been months since I last had that song in my head!!!

I can't, for the life of me, think of any earworms. Except purple rain, maybe.

(Cause we're all just)
Protons, Neutrons, Electrons
That rest on a Sunday
Work on a Monday
and someday soon
We'll be singing the old tunes
Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, Zip-a-dee-doo...

The Cat Empire just won't stop going round and round my head.

Rah! Another Cat Empire fan. I put a Cat Empire song on one of the Barbelith CD's. They are indeed exceedingly earwormy.

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy
14:35 / 11.04.07
Someone at work yesterday made me think about the song that never ends, which was a bit of a bloody coup, let me tell you.

one of the Barbelith CD's

I was thinking of suggesting a science/sci-fi themed compilation soon.

That sodding song! Cat Empire, I hate you. The song is good, but my life is too short for it's constant repetition.

And of course I now have the appalling "500 miles" thing stomping about in my brain.

I *hate* the Proclaimers.

Try knocking it out with 'Letter From America'...

I *live* in Edinburgh. It's weird listening to people sing pop songs in your home town's accent. It sounds ludicrous. I keep expecting them to say: "that's whit ah'm tryin'n tae say tae ye, pal" or "aye, ah KEN sunderland's nae mare!"

The Falcon
11:34 / 12.04.07
I'm rocking an internal version of that Peter Gabriel song from that John Cusack/Ione Skye film.

Your eyes...
the light, the heat

My favourite way of combatting earworms is to translate them. Then, when all of the original lyrics have been translated, the earworm ejects itself from my brain.

I just got "Horse with no name" out of my head that way,

no wait...it's back again.

Try knocking it out with 'Letter From America'...

Fluffy-deity-of-choice, but I misread that, and I really, really have a puerile sense of humour.

It's nice that you've got the rhythm down.

Of course, when I say "Nice", I mean "Hideous"*.

As far as actual earworms go; someone where I work has a name that fits perfectly with Dragostea Din Tei, so that's a guaranteed earworm at the moment.

Unfortunately.

*(C) Mark Lamarr for, well, the entirety of Never Mind the Buzzcocks.

Today I woke up with the theme song from Full House stuck in my head.

ORA ORA ORA ORAAAA!!
05:33 / 13.04.07
My first (and usually last) earworm defence song is 'popcorn' (though the version in my head is the one I learnt to play on a xylophone when I was 4, not the original, or the hot butter version).

It is repetitive enough to drown out any other mental sound, and not quite catchy enough to stick. I think of it as a musical smart bomb.

There was a little girl of about three on the train who had that "ladi-DAdah" bit of the Proclaimers song stuck in her head. It was hard work for a while because we couldn't work out what it was she was singing, but then her older sister chipped in with some actual words and a tune.

I need to tell you that 'Jim'll Fix It' is just an earworm of it's own accord, that it does not, as previously suggested upthread, get rid of and then leave nicely, and instead simply replaces the song in your head with itself.

The Spice Girls:

I'llllll tellyouwhadIwant
whatIreallyreallywant

Is very good for getting rid of other songs but not staying and pestering. Also I find "Onward Christian Soldiers" is always a winner.

My Earworm this evening is:

I want to ride my bi-cy-cle
I want to ride my bike
I want to ride my BI-CY-CLE
I want to ride it where I liiike.

I know not why.

Jaws was never my scene and I don't like Star Wars.

Thanks alot for that, Lula.

I dont know the name of the song, but its sung by George Burns in some movie I saw ages ago on tv.

"I've got a horse right here,
His name is Paul Revere
And the man who sold him said the horse can do.
Can do.
Can do.
The man said the horse can do.
"

The song has been in my head all week.

Guys and Dolls, kegboy.

Luck be a lady tonight....

That musical is full of teh misogynist earworms, fyi.

My earworm has a tendency to be

Springtime, for Hitler, and Germany... Argh.

Another one is

Another one rides the bus
Another one rides the bus, hey hey
Another one rides the bus....

It's pretty sad when the version of your earworm is Weird Al Yankovic's parody of an earworm.

Its even sadder that you had to mention that it was W.A.Y's version. I didnt realize it. Completly Oblivious.

Keep moving, moving, moving, though they're disapproving,
Keep them doggies moving, Rawhide!
Through rain and wind and weather, go hell for leather
Soon we'll be living, high and w-i-ide...

Good vittles, love and kissing, all the things I'm missing,
Wishing my girl was by my s-i-i-de...
My heart's calculating, my true love will be waiting,
Waiting at the end of my ride.

Move em on
Head em' up!
Head em up
Move em on!
Move em on
Head em' up!
Rawhide!

Kirin? Who the heck?

Love Today has amazing earworming qualities. I've actually grown to quite like it, though. However, currently it's

'To-niii-ii-ight! Leave me alone, I'm lonely, alone I'm lonely!'

going in interesting circles in my skull. I'm a little worried that I like it now, too (I think). Yay, Pink.

Well I now have that "Feel alright" song by that band that wore socks on a giant bed in the late 90s.

"We are YOUNG
Blah blah BLAH
Do do DO
Somthing SOMETHING
Something ELSE
Eeeeeet Cetera....
FEEL ALRIGHT!" ( I've no idea what the lyrics are and have no desire to find out. )

...with lots of cockney plonky pianos in the background and sideburns galore. But, typically, I have my goth friend Nik's version instead, which goes

"We are YOUNG
We touch GOATS
We lick COWS
We fondle CHICKENS-"

And so on.
