yay cool!

_pin, of course i can. are there any other people who'd prefer non-animal?

I eat anything and everything. I am a chubby little dustbin.

Erm... that's not a criticism of anyone's food.

I have secured myself Friday 20th April completely off work. People are welcome to come to Southampton as early as they like. I can't quite believe that work caved on this, it's an unexpected triumph.

On another note: please prepare yourself for this. Watching any fourteen hour marathon is an endurance test. You have to will yourself to keep going to the end. That length of time in front of a telly is nowhere near as easy as it sounds, even for a switch your brain off show... Eva will probably be particularly tough.

Another thing to bear in mind is that not everyone will have seen it. I recently had first viewing of Brick ruined by seeing it with two people supplying commentary, references to things that hadn't been shown and a great many "I love this bit!" remarks... needless to say, it didn't help.

Wimps and posers, leave the room.

For who it may concern; I can no longer make this, and am very sad.

This series sounds fascinating - can't say i've really done much anime in recent years, but currently on major reading binge of psychoanalysis, Jung etc, and this sounds like it might blow yer head apart quite a bit. I might try and find it in my cool brighton crustie video shop... Or I might try and join you people if it's not too cramped Seth - though i guess it's getting that way, especially if pin has dropped out

Yeah, I'm sorry. But I think we have rather reached the Limit of Life.

Confirmed we have Pacific State, Haloquin, Fat Lee, Laoi, Apophenia (can't take you seriously with that name, you're blatantly Illmatic) and Feverfew. That's six.

I'm not sure if Rich is planning to come or whether Iggy will be joining us during the day. Rich, if you're coming do you reckon you could crash with the Dark Lord Agrimbau?

I think I will have to call this a day on numbers now that there's no little pin dude.

I was planning to come, and shall probably be sleeping on the Dark Lord's sofa- I mentioned it the other week and he said he was up for it too, I'll ask him again and confirm..

There also may be Hola activities the following day- will my head take it?

no worries - i'll probably check this out on me own anyway

Awesome.

I'm appallingly excited about this, although the dread is starting to creep in around the edges.

It'll just be the 26 episodes won't it? We aren't doing director's cuts or End Of, on top of everything are we?

Are Haloquin and Apophenia the only first timers?

Mysterious Transfer Student
22:03 / 08.04.07
Well, Seth did say we'd need about fourteen hours, which is approximately equivalent to 26 episodes plus the two movies... considering the fact that Death and Rebirth is effectively a summing-up of the TV series, we may just end up skipping it. But then I'm not programming this little event.

Don't tell me you'd been considering the prospect of not watching The End of Eva. That's like reading the history of WWII and missing out the bit with the atomic bombs (tasteless analogy go!). Although I suspect that some of us may need to be stretchered off afterwards....

Essential Dazzler
22:34 / 08.04.07
To be honest, I'd much rather replace the last episodes with the director's cuts and watch End Of Evangelion after the 26th episode, but the series being what it is, I am aware of the fact that it is like (Tasteless Metaphor Continued) Nuclear Winter of the soul.

I'm asuming that as an advocater for the hardcore option, people would look down on me if I bought a duvet to curl up in when it hits the gruelling bits.

Seth
07:39 / 09.04.07
The plan I had in mind was to watch up to and including twenty as standard, the director's cuts for twenty one through twenty four, and then flip a coin as to whether we do EoE or twenty five and twenty six first. I prefer watching EoE first but I figure a coin toss will weed out argumentative types.

Mysterious Transfer Student
11:37 / 09.04.07
I'd go with eps 25-26 before EoE simply because that's the order in which I first saw them and the one that makes most sense to me - but there's your problem right there. Coin toss it is, then.

Seth
19:05 / 09.04.07
Just want to make it clear that my reference to *argumentative types* included myself!

Essential Dazzler
23:01 / 09.04.07
Well, I agree with Lee over the viewing order of the ending, can we skip the coin toss and have a fite?

Two on one sounds good.

Seth
08:44 / 10.04.07
Dude. You really don't want to fight me, especially not over something like Evangelion.

Coin tossage is final, debateless, and is something everyone can simply accept. Fifty/fifty. There's no other way of making a satisfactory decision here.

I'm not about to GBHerise or brainstemdeath my house guests.

Seth
14:51 / 13.04.07
OK, I'm now back in England and am getting really excited about this.

I have the whole of Friday, Saturday and Sunday off work. At the moment I think the rough plan is that Apophenia and I will be up to some bits and bobs during the day on Friday, and so if people could aim to arrive around Friday evening this would be good, maybe from six or seven.

If you want to come earlier, or have to because of travelling arrangements, then there's standard city centre shopping and drinking to do, there's the beautiful old town walls which are lovely to walk around, and a fantastic arts cinema called Harbour Lights within easy walking distance of town. If you're arriving earlier and need collecting from anywhere special then I'll have Nirvash (the van) and so can collect you from anywhere within reason (by this I mean probably within a fifteen mile radius, as far out as Winchester/Romsey/Fareham areas).

My proposed meeting place is Goblets, which is also a lovely place to chill out if you arrive early. Be warned, it's a cellar bar, and the part that's at street level is almost invariably closed so it might look shut from the outside, but wander in through the double doors and you'll find one of the best bars in town. It's only a five minute walk from Southampton Central train station and the National Express coach station. Here's a map:

laoi, what are your travel arrangements? You're based in Ireland, right? If you're aiming to fly into Southampton Airport then I'll happily come and collect you, just let me know your flight's arrival time and I'll make up some kind of sign that says *Dodgy Internet Mate* or some equivalent. Or you could just look for the bald dude. Otherwise it's business as usual, meet up in Goblets between six and seven.

When I get a chance I'll PM Pacific State, Haloquin, Fat Lee, Laoi and Feverfew with my mobile number and email address for last minute panic rearrangements.

Bring the usual sleepover stuff. laoi, if you are still lovely enough to want to cook for us send me a shopping list and I'll pick up ingredients.

Apophenia, you know my steez. Tizzle my phizzle for when you want to mizzle homes.

Seth
14:56 / 13.04.07
Oh, the map is better than I thought. Look to the bottom right for Harbour Lights, there's also another cinema in Ocean Village in the same area. The big multiplex cinema is due south of the train station, and there's our art gallery on the way from the train station to Goblets. Should be plenty to keep you occupied if you're arriving early.

Seth
15:03 / 13.04.07
Arse... hang on, Haloquin. Will meeting in a pub (and a cellar bar at that) be too smokey a meeting place? We can change this if needs be.

Also, if people need to arrive later than nine or ten then let me know and I'll drive by a location of your choosing to collect.

Haloquin
17:31 / 13.04.07
Ummm, a little. sorry.

I intensley dislike being awkward, but manage it anyway. Is there a smoke-free option? Like a non-smoking Wetherspoons? Or, I don't really know, I forgot the smoking ban doesn't hit England for a couple of months.

I'm stupidly sensitive to it, in that I notice smoke really easily and the psychological OMG hits quite quickly, physical effects take a while to kick in but I get very very edgy.

If its too awkward I can probably hole up in the cinema while everyone else enjoys the bar, but to be honest, I'd rather be involved. Sorry.

Haloquin
17:32 / 13.04.07
Oh, and forgot to say, we're driving down, so don't need picking up and can bring a spare sleeping bag if anyone needs one and is taking public transport.

Seth
17:54 / 13.04.07
I used to work in Goblets, and there's every chance they'll let us use the upstairs bar as a one off so we can keep it as a smoke free atmosphere.

Haloquin
18:19 / 13.04.07
Really? That would rock very hard. Again, sorry and thanks for being so accommodating.

This is turning into quite a packed weekend for me now- a friend of mine's going to be back from Australia and in Southampton, I'm picking up a camcorder and I've got a rehearsal on Sunday... and somewhere I'm going to have to fit in 14 hours of brain-meltingly good anime. I may break.

Alas, the Dark Lord will not be gracing us with his presence, although I've arranged to sleep at his house.

Anyhow, see you all on Friday (all wearing *dodgy internet mate* t-shirts/sandwich boards)

Hey all. If I can get in one last message before tomorrow, we'll be meeting in the UPSTAIRS bar at Goblets between six and seven, which has been temporarily assigned a NO SMOKING environment for the evening. Thanks ex-boss, you've sorted us out marvellously.

I figure *if* we all go to the pub for a drink later in the evening it should be the Hobbit, with its massive beer garden providing ample ventilation and its three am opening hours...

Haloquin
21:08 / 19.04.07
You're a star! Thank you.

So, on a practical note, being as I have no clue what any of you look like, when we arrive, what do we look for? Are we all supposed to wear a white carnation or something? Mostly I was wondering how to get to the upstairs bit? Go through the main bar I assume?

Our plan is to arrive around 6ish, and if we get lost and/or confused to phone Seth...

Very excited and looking forward to meeting everyone tomorrow!

That's where I went.

Hadn't really anticipated not figuring out who to look for - I guess I assumed Eva fans just have "that look" about them.

See you all tomorrow, when I'll be failing to justify in person what I was just perfectly happy to write on the internet. Modern Dilemmas.

The upstairs bar is the first part of Goblets you'll walk past, on the left. We'll be the only people in there, so Barbe-spotting should be simple.

Hmm, just found this camera's in Hythe and they're only free on saturday... may have to get it posted instead.

I'll see you all in Goblets in yourt sexy t-shirts after I've had an hour of commuter hell.

Well, that was a lovely thing and so nice to have more evidence to support the little-defended claim that anime is enjoyed for the most part by delightfully outgoing, attractive, cosmopolitan people who could be catalogue models if they wanted, but frankly have far too much to do.

Special thanks recipients must be laoi for the delicious Japanese dinner (two courses!) and Seth for making sure we all decompressed on Sunday with a visit to somewhere lovely and green with dogs, trees and drumming - oh, and for hosting the whole affair at all.

Next!
