The one day Evangelion thread

I'm getting to the stage where it's been a nearly a year since I've seen it, and as I still haven't come to terms with it I'm wanting to do it all over again.

For anyone who hasn't seen it (taken from here:

Neon Genesis Evangelion. The troublesome masterpiece. Begins like a children’s show and ends like a mindfuck horror film set in a world in which a psychosexual Book of Revelation is filled with murderous giant robots. It’s about child abuse, growing up in a cult, the apocalypse and hurting everyone you love. Particularly interesting for Freudian/Jungian analysis. Considered to be one of the classic anime texts of the Nineties, a global phenomenon worth in excess of two billion dollars. It's a twenty-six episode story with a two hour movie called End of Evangelion that replaces the final two episodes. Both endings are extraordinarily controversial. Buy it here. Is being remade as an anime in 2007 (info here) and is in development hell as a potential mega-budget live action Hollywood event movie (info here). Barbelith discussions here, here, here and here.

Be warned, this isn't for the faint-hearted. Trying to do it all in one day, with take-out for food, will be an endurance test. In the last year I've spent eleven/twelve hours watching the Lord of the Rings extended cuts back to back, and nearly twenty four hours watching all fifty episodes of Eureka Seven with only an hour break for food. Evangelion sits somewhere closer to LotR at fourteen hours, but is more emotionally draining than either. It is also frontloaded by a first six hours in which many TV viewers question why this series is as talked up as it tends to be.

If anyone's up for it, you're welcome to crash round at my place the night before and on the day of viewing, so that we can start early and go on late and have some kind of wind-down/de-brief/de-tox afterwards. So it's likely to be an arrival on Friday night and leave sometime on Sunday.

I could do this Friday 20th - Sunday 22nd April, Friday 19th - Sunday 20th May, Friday 22nd - Sunday 24th June or Friday 29th June - Sunday 1st July.

This is a deeply questionable idea and is open to people who know the show and people who've never seen it/know nothing about it. As I say, I'd be surprised if anyone's up for it... but I'm going to do it anyway.

I'm in for any but the 22-24 June one, and can bang out a stew for all, unless they're allergic to meals without meat and dairy.

pin's cooking = highly recommended.

The longest marathon I ever pulled was the final 18 episodes of Eva, so I'm sure 8 more episodes, 8 easier episodes at that, shouldn't be much harder. Work contract means I'm have no idea when I'm working till 2 weeks before, but if I can't make it I'll happily watch along from a distance, in the comfort of my own safe, comforting duvet-womb.

I've not seen it yet and am up for coming down with Pacific State, we can't do the June one either and I'm supposed to be in Portsmouth the weekend after the April dates, although I have essays and exams all through May so April is probably our best bet, if PS isn't working! Should know in a week or two.

Although I do have one query, if you don't mind me asking; is your household a smoking one? I react badly to it you see, so may have to bow out if it is.

I'm certainly up for that. I'll be in Southampton on May 20th-21st, although I'm playing a gig in Liverpool with The Hola on the 19th and not sure on what's going on with return travel arrangements. I also may be a bit frazzled for Eva after that though.

No plans for any of the others dates though

I do smoke, but I also have a balcony with a great view. Smoking can be moved outside.

Really truly? That would be beautiful if you didn't mind. Thank you muchly! *grins happily*

This Sunday
18:13 / 22.03.07
It's funny: I'm just a step away from living without any DVDs or videos for a few months (moving; can't afford to move my stuff as quickly as myself) and was debating watching all of an anime series this weekend as a sort of closer. The options were 'Victorian Romance Emma', 'Hellsing', 'Utena' or 'Eva' and I think this just clinched it on NGE. Which means, unfortunately, I won't be doing it at the same time as anybody else, but, y'know, all times are one or something. In Complementation it'll be just like we all watched it together.

I'm going to feel terribly old when it's done, though, because I keep feeling like it came out last year and it's been... a while. The slow morph into a male, Native Ritsuko is going put some sting in.

Hmm... This could be done *maybe* as soon as the April date, which would be great. Since I suffer from rolling work rotas as does Pacific State, I'll need one or two more days to get a definite answer. Otherwise consider it considered. (No dietary or atmospheric exemptions necessary by the way.)

Seth you are a crazy man. You people are no better! You'll all come out with machine guns for legs and with huge eyes!

mmmm, machine gun legs...

Pacific State is free for the April weekend, and I'm up for it.

Um, I wanted to apologise, looking at my previous post it sounds wrong... I did not in any way intend it sarcastically, I would really be really, really grateful. I just got over excited.

Quantum, is that a yes? Please?

I'd love to if only for your stew, but a)my brain would turn to gunge if I did that much anime in one go and b)I already have a machine gun for a leg, like this lady;

Have fun though you crazy kids.

OK. I'm thinking Friday 20th - Sunday 22nd April is sounding good to me.

The only thing that might make me change my mind is if Fat Lee would prefer an alternate date. I'd really like to meet that fucker.

I'm actually sorely tempted by this though I think watching that much anime in one go may send me insane. Sounds like crash space is growing limited though. Hmmm.

Apophenia, you've read my mind. Which is spooky.

Seth
04:20 / 26.03.07
You're both welcome to come. I believe the lovely pin may be able to offer crash space to anyone who won't fit at mine. But I've had seven people sleep comfortably at my place before, so it's not like we're going to run out of anything besides hot water.

Please come.

If it gets tight, is there a garden we can pitch a tent in?
Thats an option, we are happy in tents normally.

Seth
18:56 / 26.03.07
I think space will be fine. There is a green area out the back, but it's communal and shared amongst everyone. I think some residents would find it all a bit weird.

But there should be space between pin and I. I had the five members of Yolk plus our singer crash last year, it was tight but cosy. We ate cookies and listened to Derek Bailey!

Well, I'm definitely intrigued, and not a little trepidatious.

Seth
19:20 / 26.03.07
Nice one. It's all definitely confirmed for the April weekend I mention above.

The only question is how much of Friday I'll have free. It should be my rest day but Resources have booked me in for a course without my permission. I'm trying to get my day off back, but it's looking tricksy.

Either way I'll be free in the evening for definite and be back from Fareham at around half five in the evening at the latest, so we're definitely on.

I'm definitely in, so this is probably going to be as crowded as we all thought. To economise on sofa space everyone will have to begin willing themselves into a state of superhuman slenderness, just like all the characters on this show.

... What? It's just a name. I'm not actually *that* fat.

21:21 / 26.03.07
Negotiations complete! I have a two-seater, and two-seater with an armchair on the end of it, a space on the floor and a garden for an extreme emergency, all at our disposal! I'll be back in Southampton at half 6, so plans can spiral on outwards from there.

16:40 / 27.03.07
I'm so jealous. I did all of Twin Peaks in a huge marathon viewing once, upping the challenge rating by spending the entire span eating nothing but cherry pie and drinking nothing but coffee, and it was one of the best experiences I can't remember that I've ever had.

if we put noodles in the stew, does that make it ramen?

15:50 / 28.03.07
might there be room for a stranger? I haven't watched Evangelion since I was in middle school, and I may be in the UK visiting 'lithers around that weekend anyway. I promise I won't take up too much room on the couch, and I'll make Japanese food for everyone.

Seth
03:44 / 29.03.07
Yes laoi, please come! I haven't met most of the people who are coming in the flesh, so we're all strangers in all but this text medium. And Japanese food sounds amazing. Very welcome.

_pin
08:24 / 29.03.07
I don't know about ramen, but I thought it was more soupy. At any rate, the stew I was planning (peanut), isn't soupy at all (it's kind of hot peanut butter with spices and bits in).

I now, however, feel rude to our guest. And will feel even ruder as I ask; Laoi, is there any chance you could make some animal-free Japanese food as well? Will happily buy ingredients etc. if it makes me less awkward.

You know peanut butter is my favourite food right? Plus I've been discussing NGE with Seth for two years, and still haven't seen it all.

Damn, this is becoming unavoidable.

_pin
08:44 / 29.03.07
I wasn't even aware you were still dithering. There is plenty of space! And peanut butter! I'm not lying when I say that the tub is bigger then my own head.

We'll be at this for fourteen hours on the Saturday, so here's my vote for us having more than one meal! It's also worth remembering that I get 50% or buy-one-get-one free Eats Like A Filthy Pig discount from at least two pizza chains and one sandwich retailer.

I think we'll need some physical activity on the day to stop us ossifying. I hope to lead us through an NGE inspired kata on the nearest greenspace at regular intervals.

You can lead us in the Synchronised Attack.
