I felt similarly about Bob Burden's prose Flaming Carrot story he published in something - a TPB? Can't remember. I could picture the story making a fun comic bit, but as prose, it was... hard to read.

I didn't find Eppy/Orion difficult, but I the material in between was challenging. In a fun way (for me) - that's where some of the greatest experiments seemed to be.

Funny thing - I felt the same way about the prose Flaming Carrot as I did with Wagner's second Mage story, the one that came out in the late 90s. It wasn't prose, it was just straight-up, traditional comic-booking. But it felt like prose next to the earlier Grendel stuff.

I've only read the first four or five issues of Mage and I was unimpressed. Naturalistic straight storytelling, dull lead character who wanted a Cherry Coke. I'm more tempted by Mage II, which at least has Bernie Mireault and Joe Matt and Dave Sim in it...
