stuart o'grady won the paris-roubaix, the one day cycling classic dubbed 'the hell of the north'... fan-farking-tastic, is all i can say.

have been a great fan of his, and of aussies in european cycling, for a long while (can't wait til all this football is over and we can have le tour ) as my old man was a good rider in his day.

yay stuey. go aussie. yip-ee... bloody marvellous.

geelong beat sydney, yes!! and we sit two games clear atop the table, yes yes!!

sydney beat us to clinch their spot in the grand final (which they then won, p-tooie!) two years ago, so revenge is sweet. [aah, sigh long in comfort extremis...]

and sweeter, as this result now in the second half of the season means sydney have a long way to go to even make the finals play-offs. ha!

c'arn the cats!! yes!!

o, it's just me...

but the matildas, the women's football team, won a spot into the quarter finals in china at the world cup!! first time we ever won a world cup game and we go and win one, the draw against norway (world rank 4) and needed just a draw against canada (rank 9) and we did it!! in stoppage time, bang! wow!! yay!!

i hope to be back here next week, the mighty geelong cats are playing tonight to secure their spot in the grand final and we should win the flag, having crushed all before us in the home and away phase of the competition.

geelong haven't won a flag (the australian football league [AFL] premiership is denoted by the epithet 'flag', even though the team gets a trophy. hmmm...) since i was a foetus, so this is a significant period in my life, people!

and back i come, bam!

the cats not only won, they obliterated the opposition inflicting the biggest winning margin in a grand final ever!!!

o, yea! o, salvation! o, this feels sooooooooooooo good!! i had such a good day. i'm having such a good weekend. and it is all barely believable. barely. o, it's real!

unreal!! yay, etc... [asto leaps for joy, skips into sunset, uplifting funk music pumps into cinema, lights come up...]

For fans of American baseball:

I'm currently enjoying a match between my Philadelphia Phillies and division rivals Washington Nationals. A win today coupled with a loss by the New York Mets means the Phillies will see the playoffs -- something that hasn't happened for 14 years.

Dare I even post this for fear of the jinx?

Yeah, okay.

Oh yes.

I watched a South African gentleman interviewed on the TV earlier. He was sitting in a bar but appeared entirely coherant:

"England don't deserve to win the World Cup. They've been rubbish for four years and have had one good week. No."

He looked at the camera and there, just for a moment, you could see the fear. The idea that his team would not win was too much for him to admit.

I love sport.

This weekend is good for sports fans.... England becoming the first retainers of the Rugby World Cup and Lewis kicking Alonso's ass to be the first rookie to win the F1 Championship in the last race of the year. ITV is getting some serious love from me this weekend!

What a frightfully disappointing weekend!

Didn't hugely mind about the Rugby but Lewis really did show he wasn't ready to win the championship with that damned rookie mistake...

Evil Scientist
08:37 / 22.10.07
Ahh, no team's held the title for two consecutive World Cups (he said rationalising desperately). It'd have been great if we had won. But I'm glad that we had the chance to defend the cup in the final.

I honestly thought we were lucky to get to the semi's.

Suck it up, Danski.

A truly mindblowing evening at Pittodrie (it's gaelic for 'dung heap', donchernow) was had by all except the unfortunates who'd traveled west from Denmark's capital. To see their team, as the teletext put it "crushed". I really can't remember walking away from a game there on sunbeams before, but this time. Like, 2-0 was enough; no-one expected much after the doing at Motherwell on Sat. No-one. But 4-scud. 4.

You fucking dancer.

Bring on Everton, Bayern Munich, whatevs. Now is the time of Fantasyland.

The Falcon
14:15 / 24.12.07
Mogwai are Celts. There is no way we will beat Bayern, but it's still exciting, and I did rather think that about Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk and getting out of a group that looked like a Champions League one. So.

The airhorns (and bam-bams) provided fans for the night were a great touch and hopefully will return in force in February.

astro is nervous.

we haven't won yet (well, we've been winning all year!), but today is the day - the mighty geelong cats take on the hawthorn hawks (couldn't they have been more inventive?) in a clash that has all the elements of a classic grand final to decide the 2008 australian football league (AFL) season.

my cats won last year, as regular readers of this thread will be aware, smashing a 44 year losing streak in style, and have gone on to dominate this season, giving them a current run of having won 42 of their last 44 games. but as the old and true adage notes, it isn't the best team of the season, it is the best team on the day... we've certainly got the team and the skill and the passion and the other good things that go into securing a flag - and we've got gazza

so i wait nervously, while the pundits rate highly (and rightly, i must say) this fantastic team... go cats!

[they are certainly a fillip, as the crystal palace super eagles have been pretty well anything but this season...]

I'm actually excited that Vanderbilt just beat Auburn, the first time since the 1955 Gator Bowl (yes, there is such a thing— of course now it's the Konica Minolta Gator Bowl, such a nice ring to it). My father played in that game, and I've been following Vanderbilt's usually abysmal performance since I was a kid. I don't follow American football that much anymore, but I decided this year I wanted to again, and apparently picked a good year.
Go 'Dores!

all right, after the unadulterated dismay at the result of the grand final last year, the only other loss all last season (it's the one on the last day that hurts most, but...) was to the hated 'pies, who we met, and thrashed!, in the grand final of the pre-season cup last night.

we are the champions, my friend. we'll keep on fighting til the end... and we meet last season's final nemesis in the first round of the real season week after next - two games, two demons. bring it on!

we are the champions... [astro skips off, singing...]

socceroos are off to south africa. third team to assure their appearance, after japan did simply by dint of time zones, and of course the hosts. yay. very very yay!

we also beat japan last night to seal top spot, undefeated and only conceding their one goal (snapping our 'keeper's 710 min unbeaten streak). very very yay much indeed a lot!

Well, I was a little surprised after seeing how they played, but the US defeated Spain today in the Confederations Cup. I snuck away from work today to watch it. It was kind of a sloppy win, but it was a win.

ONLY NICE THINGS
10:30 / 26.06.09
In the interests of saying NICE THINGS, I thought, from what I saw, that the United States played the right way against Spain, at least in the first half. It was rather like what you Americans call a "full-court press"; lots of squeezing the play, lots of tracking back, keeping Spain limited to long shots. Not necessarily the prettiest football, but if they had tried to play Spain's game they would have died.

Well done, the U.S! And well done Spain, as well. Everyone's a winner!

Tsuga
22:06 / 26.06.09
You're right! Kool-Aid and rice-krispie treats for all! Or, as a corollary, Cola cao and flan!

You're also right that they played the right way against Spain; I guess that they made that obvious. I'm interested to see what they try and do against Brazil.

It's very frustrating that soccer is so much of a red-headed stepchild here. Few games are televised, and there's little coverage in general. Even the U.S. beating Spain has been little more than a perfunctory blip mentioned on the news. But, I'll be able to find Sunday's game, at least.

my cats won the flag again, btw - beat the hapless saints.

i am still reeling in piques of jealousy, though, at my new l'il son: i had to endure the tragic hardship and pain of forty three long sorry years before my first flag - he had to wait just two days!

still, the cats won!! c'arn geelong.

we are geelong, the greatest team of all
we are geelong, we're always on the ball
we play the game as it should be played
at home or far away!

so, no-one has won nothin' for near ten months? no spaniards in the barbantheon? superbowl won by teams not supported by the barbantheon? no-one an inter fan? stanley cup triumphed by those other crappy sides? anything?

ah well, my division 7 team won on the weekend, 6-2, the two i let through (as 'keeper) were one-on-ones, of which i got a hand to one but could only push it into the post's inside; having otherwise saved two other one-on-ones (iker cassillas, me? nahh...)

yay, much...

Well, Germany won the Eurovision Song Contest for the 2nd time since 1982, but I don't know if that counts and I didn't watch it.

australia won their opening group game against india, 4-0, in the asian cup in qatar. we have a particular desire to do well here, after the debacle of last asian cup and the fact that the hosts 'stole' our world cup - notwithstanding we're also hosting the next asian cup in 2015, so it will be nice to do so as the holders!

big game against south korea tonight - beating them would be a big step along the way to the trophy.
