I liked the idea of Tin Machine, for precisely the reasons Jack and Haus have just given. Unfortunately, I hated the records. On the strength of the three tracks so far, I don't have the same problem with Grinderman.

Yeah, maybe there's something of the mid-life crisis to it... maybe not. I'm not really that bothered if the whole album's gonna be of the quality we're heard thus far.

And y'know what? I liked Tin Machine, and I liked 'em for just that reason. It was Bowie and Reeves and the Sales boys bringing the rock, kicking out the jams, and generally having a noisy good time. It's fun to hear people having fun.

(I dunno why I'm pushing the point really, cos I'm not mortally offended by Grinderman or anything; I'm not really bothered what Nick Cave gets up to either way, the tracks sound ok and it's just a bunch of people who play in a band together already rather than some kinda freaky supergroup set-up anyway, so hey, why not..

1. I heard 'No Pussy Blues' by Grinderman on the radio the other night, and it is rousing comedy misogynistic trash-rock greatness of the highest order (tho, oddly, too many funny noises on the guitars and not enough blues-thrash-YAGH! I feel).

This is a pretty average album, in truth. (Or, rather, the leaked version is.) It sounds, in places, like a cod-Bad Seeds disc, and certainly not as gloriously fucked-up as the Birthday Party.

Yeah, I have to agree. I'm still a bit annoyed about the name change (I can see why it couldn't have been a Bad Seeds or a Nick Cave solo album, but couldn't they have come up with something a bit better ... on the other hand, I suppose Grinderman might be the guy who was at the wheel on the sleeve of 'Junkyard', so fair enough) but apart from that, I am quite looking forward to this.

In my defence, pretty much everything sounds a bit average on my computer; it's like medium wave radio without any volume.

Not sure why people are finding it so underwhelming- got mine today, and I fucking love it. It's less of a sleazy, basic rock'n'roll thing than I had been led to believe, which initially was something of a disappointment, but it's fucking ACE. It's like the Bad Seeds from Earth-2 or something.

Although one of my favourite things about it is that in the Library on my Media Player (alphabetically), it comes in between Gram Parsons and Guitar Wolf. That's a GOOD place for a young album to start out.

Hate to point out the obvious so gratuitously, but just to make clear: that Plan B editorial functions as an amusing satire of lesser magazines habit of doing an occasional, patronising "Women in Rock!" issue, pointing out (in a rather self-congratulatory tone admittedly) that this is the first issue of Plan B in which all the lead features deal with male musicians, including the uber-male Grinderman.

Oh, and care to expand on your beef against Everett True, Alex's Grandma? I happen to think he's a pretty sound guy (a certain amount of self-absorbed eccentricity allowing), so maybe in the current spirit of maleness we can, er, fight it out with fists and whatnot...

It's been a couple of weeks now, and the Grinderman album is still my most-listened-to CD.

It's fucking ACE. (Saving all my best comments for my review, but Man In The Moon is absolutely gorgeous, and Honey Bee Let's Fly To Mars is like Nick Cave fronting The Stooges. Which can only be a good thing, in my book).
