A coda to the Boeing anti-gravity story - which piqued my interest as, in my professional capacity, I've had quite a bit of contact with Boeing over the past few years. Yesterday I talked to an independent aviation consultant regarding Boeing's supposedly "secret" work on antigravity propulsion and he replied that whilst he hadn't personally come across any mention of this research, he wouldn't be surprised if Boeing were doing research, and if indeed they were, it would be almost certainly for military application.
The Nick Cook story is interesting to me because it raises the question of who is considered to be a "legitimate" source of authority/knowledge. The key players in this drama are Cook - the investigative journalist (consultant to Jane's Defence weekly), Russian scientist Eugene Podkletnov and former Boeing Phantom Works head honcho George Muellner - whom Cook claims emailed him regarding Boeing's interest in Podkletnov's work - and elsewhere it's claimed that Muellner spoke about antigravity research at the Farnborough Air Show in 2002. NASA and BAE Systems have also been doing research in this direction, and this is where the claims can, to some degree, be substantiated, as BAE's Project Greenglow involved several universities (for example The University of Glasgow and various researchers involved with BAE have been fairly open about discussing what the project was all about, and the findings of NASA's "Breakthrough Propulsion Physics" project are also in the public domain - abstracts & papers available here .
Cook is considered a authoritative source due to his association with Jane's and his track record as an aviation consultant. Podkletnov hasn't said anything much about his research for the past six years or so, and Boeing, as I posted earlier, have said that they are not pursuing research in this area. Muellner has been involved with several Boeing projects, some of which were classified (the Bird of Prey) and others, such as the Blended Wing Body which haven't made it past the conceptual stage. |
