This is somewhat akin to grant's post above, but the current apocalyptic furor in America has always struck me more as the end of our imperial hubris. We're looking at the fall of a worlview and since, for many people in the US, the classic American myth has pretty much shaped their worldview, it certainly must look like the end of the world.
The only problem I see with this is that it doesn't account for any current premonitions of the end from other cultural perspectives/countries on the scale that America has now (not sure if the religious climate actually is the same in other places; people who aren't from the US can tell me if my cultural analysis is shit or not). |
