I recall hearing in one of that paranormal TV programs that the book of revelations has an explicit reference to an "age wherein the image the dominates the world", or something like that, referring to all visual media.

As an anechdote, the program confrontated the prophecies of te book of revelations with the ones of some inhabitant of Pirineos towns (mountains between Spain and France)

Have you heard about buddhist prophecies too?

grant - just wanted to pop back in here to say : thanks a lot! Had a deep meditation last night in a little private trabalho and your direction in this thread made very deep connections. So obvious really, it's kind of hidden in plain view (or was to me, anyway). Really, thanks for the input.

And to any one else who kind of said the same thing but I missed it first time round. A thread can take a strange route to get to the peak with the views, but it's always worth the extra scenery in the end...

I'd just like to link everybody over here, to round this thread off.

A much more concise and eloquent opening post leading to proactive and responsible ideas for action and meditation...it's what I intended, but didn't quite pull off. Lost in my own psychodrama. Back now, though! Viva all you crazy cats.

It's the hardest to swallow, what with beasts with 10 horns on seven heads and all, grant

I almost Barbequoted that soundbite, grant, haw! What a mouthful! I'm off to read about the taiping rebellion ("Most accurate sources put the total deaths at about 20 million civilians and army personnel" 'kinhell!), but I wanted to point crumpet at this post about a gigantic ideaspace wicker man to put eschatological fallacies in.

Bit meta, there Quants. You might want to check that html.

Or maybe not? Am I missing a joke?

The link should be fixed now... and I'm glad to be useful.

Useful *and* beautiful, the perfect grant design. Don't know what happened to the link there, mis-tagged somehow.

Oh, and I'm copy editing that Taiping Rebellion wikipedia article right now -- I think it was written by someone whose first language wasn't English. There's a better overview here and another one here.

Key elements:
* failed exam+poorly translated Christian tracts led to nervous breakdown.
* revealed as Christ's little brother.
* nearly toppled the empire.
* but spent too much time with his harem.

This is somewhat akin to grant's post above, but the current apocalyptic furor in America has always struck me more as the end of our imperial hubris. We're looking at the fall of a worlview and since, for many people in the US, the classic American myth has pretty much shaped their worldview, it certainly must look like the end of the world.
The only problem I see with this is that it doesn't account for any current premonitions of the end from other cultural perspectives/countries on the scale that America has now (not sure if the religious climate actually is the same in other places; people who aren't from the US can tell me if my cultural analysis is shit or not).
