While I'm sure the subjectivity of driving individual examiners does affect results from time to time, I'm actually always surprised how happy people are to ascribe test results they don't like to it. I'm also surprised by people's willingness to claim knowledge of the emotional states to their examiners.
My previous three fails were all because of serious faults and all my own fault. I had no argument. This one was weird. I failed because I had 17 minor faults and you're only allowed 16. It wasn't a bad drive and I don't think I deserved that many errors. About 10 minutes into the test the mood changed in the car, the examiner who'd previously been chatting to me fell silent and sombre, and for every action his arm moved across the clipboard and hatched another box. Even simple stuff, turning left on a quiet junction with nobody around when I'd checked every direction, got a minor error. It honestly felt like he'd decided to mark aggressively, as my instructor said afterwards, or decided that I shouldn't pass but because I was avoiding serious errors he'd have to do the job with minors. It wasn't a surprise when I failed not because I'd done badly but because of the grim silence in the car.
I can't imagine why the guy would have an axe to grind, I've been out with him before and he was fine, but it was an odd experience which is why I mentioned his apparent emotional state. Never mind. Next time etc. |
