Is it cute, or must it die?

See the horror that is the Bolivia Bug!

I have a severe clash of base instincts going on here. Cuddle or crush?

Post your instinct-twisting creepies here

Gosh.

Dude, I'm sure that's a genetically modified Pekinese. It looks about the right size.

Put it on a lead and give it to Paris Hilton. It's far too big to squish.

Blimey - I hope it's mummy the spider and its Daddy the hamster are both proud of their TERRIFYING OFFSPRING.
I suspect it's either CGI, or ten students wearing wooly legwarmers under a shagpile carpet.
No longer may I seek comfort in the knowledge that small furred things exist, for it exists also, and is freaking me out.

Apparently it's a "Puss Mouth".

It's some kind of moth caterpillar. Something like a hag moth (aka "monkey slug").

There's a page on caterpillars at What's that bug?, though -- there's a really cute Brazilian thing they can't identify that they call a Megalopygidae that looks like it could be related, and much further down, a specimen from Apopka, FL (I think your Bolivian Bug is from a guy in Miami, right?) that they also can't identify other than as resembling a Megalopyge (alternately, Lagoa) crispata, which is a kind of flannel moth. This is a relative, called Megalopyge opercularis.

Cute, isn't it?

(The larvae of opercularis don't look much like the Bolivian Bug, but the adults sure do, don't they?)

Ugh!

I just dry-heaved in my chair at work.

Chilling words....

I would freak out pretty badly if I were to see one anywhere near me.

*brr*

Have I mentioned I don't really care for creepy-crawlie things?

grant, that little critter is beautiful.

My problem is thaton the whole I like bugs and find them fascinating* (and furry bugs are even better), so there's a chance I'd instinctively pick up something like the Bolivia Bug without thinking that maybe it has a few nasty defences.

*Apart from mosquitos and wasps. As Saxondale said: "Wasps are bastards".

Why is Barbelith such a seething mass of bug hatred? That's the coolest thing I've seen all day! I wish we had fur-lined caterpiggles here.

Honestly. I think you all need to get out and play in the dirt more often.

I suspect one would have a fairly nasty skin reaction if one attempted to huggle that thing.

If I were home, I'd go hide under the covers at such a terrifying thought.

MattShepherd: I WEDDED KALI!
17:25 / 01.08.06
And as you hid under your covers, you'd feel something fuzzy brush up against your foot, and for a moment, just one moment, you'd convince yourself it was a sock you'd forgotten, but then you'd feel it twitch against the sole of your foot, a horrible tickle, and realize that the scratching noise, the one that you'd heard-without-hearing since running into the house, was coming from the ceiling directly above the bed...

But why? It's like a puppy! A tiny, tiny puppy that eats leaves and has eight feet! What's not to love about that?

MattShephard, you will pay for the nightmare you have given me. Do you understand?????

I'm with lekvar. But yeah, I'd probably have to restrain myself from huggling it, knowing full well any bug that furry must be terrifically poisonous.

Yum. Gin. Curse these workdays.

The idea of that thing throwing up a hairball makes me feel very very ill.

Wow, that looks adorable. I wouldn't want to hug it, though - bugs are too squishable. I wonder how safe it is to let it walk on your hands, though?

I'm a little squicked by specifically spiders, so tarantulas, though fuzzy, are hard to take. But I like fuzzy caterpillars.

It will be a dream come true for my cat, who probably doubles as Dracula's servant (his servants ate spiders and other icky stuff) - something that looks like a mouse, but moves real slow, and tastes like bugs!

Meow!

aww, it looks so cute..!

i have been to bolivia - if you were a bug and had to slink about up there on the andean plateau, you'd want a warm fluffy coat and face like that, too.

why do people have this prediliction to squish bugs?

I think we should have Evil Scientist disect it to learn it's secrets. Then we clone it, make it ten thousand times bigger, and then we have it crush Tokyo.

lekvar
00:10 / 03.08.06
I think we should simply ask its secrets in a conspiratorial whisper. If it gets coy we could tickle it under the chin, maybe give it a cookie.

THEN comes the Tokyo-crushing.

Totally! It's adorable! I hate earwigs and wasps as much as the next guy, but how could anyone want to squoosh that little fluffy guy?
