i have long thought of rollins as some kind of destined-to-lead-us-all-after-the-inevitable-apocalypse kind of a father figure.

i would hate his leadership sometimes, but i feel in my bones that it would make me BETTER.

He was satirizing chauvanism when he went on about "having his way with her figure" correct? That behaviour being the peanut butter to the subserviant housewife jelly of the Conservative Traditionalist Sandwich...

i was under the impression she had some wierd things to say about women too.
i can dig if it's helpful.

I was finding the video rather unsettling until I arrived at that possibility. While I'm still finding it a little unsettling, some sort of forthcoming consensus that the parody is clearly intentional and that I'm just a little slow will make me feel a lot better.

I see Ann Coulter as a political form of the "evil wrassler" who comes to town, trashes the local sports team, calls people fat and threatens to sleep with all of the women. She gets a responce, and then argues to the responce, quickly moving away from what she said to how people react to what she said.

It's a standard tactic in entertainment, and the people who "agree" with her don't agree with what she says as much as they like pissing off the people she pisses off. She failed at being a lawyer, failed at being a TV reporter and now has found a good job as the right wing heel on political combat TV.

And if the Liberals were in power and had the ad rates, she'd be a Liberal as well.

I think the worst thing in her mind is not being the center or attention, and if she wasn't able to get on TV and Radio, she'd be doing whatever else is the equivelent of "look at me! Look at me!"

As for her being a good debater, she won't do debates where they can be recorded, since the few she did, she was destroyed by people who had a firm command of facts and didn't engage her emotionally, because once she gets people yelling, she's won.

She'll be gone in a couple of years. If nothing else, her hard drinking will make her unattractive to look at on TV...OK, MORE unattractive than she is now, and she won't be able to get play off of the "I'm the thin blonde party girl" image she's crafted for herself.

I'm quite disappointed by the Rollins Clip, actually. So Angry Hank thinks Coulter is a "fucking psycho" and wants to hire her to be his personal sex slave. All righty then. I kept waiting for the funny bit, the punchline that never came.

Or is there something subtle here that I'm missing?

It would be irredeemably revolting were it not for the fact that Coulter plays off the idea of female submission (women shouldn't have the right to vote, ect) all the damn time her damn self. All I see is someone picking up her ball and running with it.

Personally, I thing Rollins is funny, but I also find Ann Coulter kinda funny too, soooo...

It wasn't the misogyny (which I understoood to be facetious) that bothered me about the clip, it was the lack of any dicernable wit. There was no point that hadn't been made more effectively elsewhere. Henry's a funny guy, he just missed the mark on this one.

She was on Newsnight, interviewed with Jeremy Paxman - he didn't go for her to the extent I would have liked, but it was great fun watching the confusion on her face when Paxo kept asking her if she actually stood by and believed what she had written.

Incidentally, I love what Rollins is doing with the "looking like Richard Dean Anderson" thing. It also means I can imagine RDA with lots of tattoos.

If you mean "were slaves captured by Africans and sold to Europeans / Americans", then yes, that is substantially correct. It certainly wasn't as clear cut an affair as "white people land raiding parties to capture and enslave black people", although I'd've thought that asking someone to get you a slave was pretty much as bad as doing it yourself.

Does she have a quiz?

Incidentally, I love what Rollins is doing with the "looking like Richard Dean Anderson" thing.

He'll need to learn to build a super computer from a bicycle pump and some bacon grease before he'll get much RDA love from me.

that is substantially correct

Is it though? Not being snarky, I genuinely don't know. I'm a bit dubious about statements like that, not least 'cos of the way Coulter and her ilk attempt to employ the arguement.

As I skatingly understand it, slavery existed in Africa - most slaves were prisoners of war, debtors or criminals. A lot were often used for gold mining for trading on the Trans-Sahara trade route.

The scale of this was miniscule compared to the Britain-America-Africa slave trading that opened up from about 1700 onwards. Raids, slavery-motivated wars and kidnapping went through the roof.

A lot of revisionist rants try to suggest that slavery was a natural part of African society and therefore
- not the fault of white people because look, black people were doing all the actual kidnapping
- just an extension of an existing trade

Which is bollocks because the sudden enormous demand totally rewrote how African traders operated.

Here's a really dodgy contemporary account using similar logic.:

"This barbarous usage of those unfortunate wretches, makes it appear, that the fate of such as are bought and transported from the coast to America, or other parts of the world, by Europeans, is less deplorable, than that of those who end their days in their native country; for aboard ships all possible care is taken to preserve and subsist them for the interest of the owners, and when sold in America, the same motive ought to prevail with their masters to use them well, that they may live the longer, and do them more service. Not to mention the inestimable advantage they may reap, of becoming christians, and saving their souls, if they make a true use of their condition...."

Kiltartan Cross
09:18 / 23.06.06
Oh, quite. To say "Africans did the kidnapping" is not to excuse the behaviour of the Europeans/Americans who were the market. It adds more people to blame - perhaps with more excuse, if they were doing so under pressure, perhaps not, if they were doing so out of greed - but it doesn't take any blame away!

Funny you should mention Ferguson, Fly- although Sheena's pretty much toilet-trained now, I still leave newspaper out for when she has accidents. Imagine my delight to see Niall Ferguson's stupid face liberally dosed with dog poo a few days ago.

Somewhere I have the Guardian with the big Coulter interview, complete with massive picture. I think that'll be next.

I just realised Ferguson is the same person whose TV programme "Why I believe there was only one war last century" or whatever it was called I avoided on account of the precis.

I won't go into a rabid discussion of why a historian should know better than to call dreadnoughts "instruments of overseas control", which was a gem of his I found somewhere on't web.

Somewhat of a tangent inspired by having seen a similar sort of discussion take a much less civil direction recently:

It's interesting— the people of many European countries enslaved each other for debts, for crimes, or in war, and we don't often see that used to excuse or mitigate white enslavement. (Which is, I think, the effect of saying "Well, really, Africans took other Africans prisoner; whites just shipped them to Europe and America," regardless of intention.) I hypothesize it's because %Europeans are all different while African people are all the same.% In this model Bosnia and Croatia would be different people making war on each other in lamentable genocide, while Kenya and Ghana would be "Africans enslaving their own people". (see "the country of Africa") If Ireland took over England and sold English people to Americans, Americans would not then be justified saying "Well, really, it was their own people doing the kidnapping."

It seems to be a common theme. "Africa is fucked because those crazy Africans can't get it together. Europe and America are fucked for vastly more complex reasons..."

I'm paraphrasing here, obviously, but it seems to be the attitude.

I completely and totally agree that most people think that way. But I'm also uninformed about most of the African continent's political structure. I'm going to go research now, thanks to this discussion.
