"I've never seen people enjoying their husbands' deaths so much."

“These broads are millionaires, lionized on TV and in articles about them, reveling in their status as celebrities and stalked by griefparrazies. I have never seen people enjoying their husband’s death so much.”

"These self-obsessed women seem genuinely unaware that 9-11 was an attack on our nation and acted like as if the terrorist attack only happened to them. They believe the entire country was required to marinate in their exquisite personal agony."

Please, don't even try to read or listen to Ann Coulter, she's like a tall fascist gun-nut version of Nikki from Big Brother - but less coherent. Your brain will melt at her non sequiturs. Just don't do it.

God, she's such a bitch. Who the fuck buys her psychotic books, anyway? I mean seriously, I can generally wrap my head around conservative thinking and force myself to understand how they see the world. But Ann Coulter is simply bat shit insane, there's no two-ways about it. She's crazier than Alan Keyes, for fuck's sake!

Anyone seen Joe Dante's episode of Masters Of Horror, "Homecoming"?

It has a character who is TOTALLY supposed to be Ms Coulter in it. Suffice to say, she doesn't come out of it well. I recommend it to anyone, really.

SPOILERS

(Quick precis- the dead from Iraq come back to life... to vote against the war. Much, much less cheesy than it sounds).

Look, I know it's Coulter, but can we have a bit less of the 'bitch' and the mental-health-issues-as-slurs? Cheers.

Having got that out of the way: You're totally right, she wants a fucking stake through her heart.

I think she'd have to actually have a heart for that to be effective.

Well, I think "crazy" is a colloquialism, unlike, say, "schizo." But okay, I don't actually think she is mentally ill, I think she is an evil, heartless sadist with an exceedingly poor grasp on the tools of logical argument.

What I enjoy about this story is that she is finally, finally, being criticized by the mainstream media. Why they haven't noticed that she's EVIL PURE EVIL until now remains a mystery.

Actually, I think she has a very good grasp of public argument....she is probably a pretty smart cookie.

Oh wow, weird... I didn't realize that Coulter lost a friend on 911. Maybe she just secretly feels bitter because she perceives heteronormative society as valuing a widow's grief above that of a bereaved friend. But that's probably too generous of me.

Indeed. She's very intelligent. And that's definitely a bad thing. Were she stupid, she wouldn't be quite so scary.

I don't buy it. You think this demonstrates a very good grasp of public argument?

"And why does native African kinte cloth get a free pass [from liberals]? It is a historical fact that American slaves were purchased from their slave masters in Africa, where slavery exists in some parts to this day. Indeed, slavery is the only African institution America has ever adopted. But while some Americans express pride in their slave-trading ancestors by calling themselves "African-Americans" and donning African garb, pride in Confederate ancestors is deemed a hate crime. Perhaps, in a bid for the Catholic vote, Democrats could demand that those Masonic symbols be removed from the Great Seal of the United States. And how about the American eagle? The eagle is a bird of prey and hence offensive to rodents, a key Democrat constituency." (from the Wikipedia link above)

We're talking about her, aren't we? And she makes a pretty good living off this kind of stuff, while everyone protests about the liberal media. Yeah, I think she is pretty smart, even though nothing she says really holds water, but then it isn't really clear to me how much of it she believes anyway. Her rants are a rallying cry for Republicans and a taunt for others, with just enough argument in there that she doesn't get dismissed from the start. Not that the arguments she puts forward matter to her, I suspect, since taking her seriously probably a losing move. She is vile, of course, but rather sharp with it.

I think she has a firm grasp on argument, but a rather nebulous idea of what a fact is, or what history is. While I admit that facts and history are largely subjective, her twisting of what is commonly held as fact is incredible. Coulter once told a Canadian journalist that Canada did indeed have a draft during the Vietnam war and willingly gave troops to the war. When pressed, Coulter backpedaled and downplayed the draft comment, while still pushing the idea that the Canadian military had a part in the Vietnam war. Simply preposterous.

I have to thank the gods for her existance, though. The shit that comes out of her mouth is hysterical:
"I have to say I'm all for public flogging. One type of criminal that a public humiliation might work particularly well with are the juvenile delinquents, a lot of whom consider it a badge of honor to be sent to juvenile detention. And it might not be such a cool thing in the 'hood to be flogged publicly".

There's always the British Ann Coulter. Who has taken to calling London 'Londonistan' for reasons that hardly bare repeating or that make any sense.

She may or may not have a firm grasp on what is a logical argument or what can be said to be a fact, but that's all irrelevant as she has chosen not to choose those and go for far more effective rhetorical tools instead. She has learnt well the dictum:

"If you're going to tell a lie, tell a big one. If you say it often enough, people will start believing it."

Of course, she's helped in this by the fact that half the time people who oppose her are too busy going "actually, maybe there IS a liberal media bias!"

On Melanie Phillydick's website, there's an advert for her book, Londonistan. There's an amusing juxtaposition of words:

Londonistan
How Britain created
a terror state within
Melanie Phillips

So, any bets? Left knee perhaps? Maybe a small chemical weapons factory in her right cornea. Who knows?

Actually, I think she has a very good grasp of public argument....she is probably a pretty smart cookie.

I agree, but she's smart in the same way as Julie Burchill ie. she carries extreme arguments through sheer vitriolic force. One is blindsided by her audacity in forcing such frankly trollish, obnoxious points of view - but if one actually pauses to look for things like factual accuracy or even logical consistency, it's quickly apparent that what she's saying doesn't hang together at all.

Of course, she's helped in this by the fact that half the time people who oppose her are too busy going "actually, maybe there IS a liberal media bias!"

I think she's helped more by the fact that those who oppose her are pushed into the position of having to deconstruct her argument ("well, X isn't true, and there's no evidence for Y, and..."), which isn't quite as sexy as getting off on a head of exhilarating outrage, however factually wonky.

I agree with Ganesh's observations here. She has to be smart enough on one level to take this as far as she has, but there's no way she's so smart that this Coulter person is just a persona.

This made me feel a bit better. Ann Coulter pie attack video on youtube.com. If they hadn't missed, it'd be so much better...

In the end, it really doesn't matter whether or not Ann Coulter's persona is "schtick." The truly scary fact of the matter is that people actually agree with what she says, and vote accordingly.

If you don't believe me, read some of the comments here.

Some highlights:

"Hey pinko's the truth hurts don't it.
Morons!! Demorats do sell their souls and deserve what ever pinko commies like most of you get."

"Ann is doing and saying to you what you try to do to conservative all day long and you babies can't take it. Thank you mother for chosing life. And the dems should not use the widows as they do."

"The 9-11 widows using their loss to attack Pres. Bush is on par, no, beneath the level of O.J. Simpson pledging to find the real killer."

I asked my staunchly libertarian co-worker, who just yesterday professed a liking of Ms. Coulter, what he thought of her most recent comments. He tried a half-hearted defense of her overall approach, said she "makes a lot of sense on a lot of issues" (prompting guffaws from me which stopped him cold), and then spent the next ten minutes whisking me thru the wonderful world of conservative theory with a quick "Bill Clinton raped a woman" pitstop avoiding any further mention of Coulter.

She's most likely gone too far this time, and I really can't see any coming back from this one.

"And the dems should not use the widows as they do."

Am I remembering incorrectly, or weren't at least several "9-11 widows" presented as rah-rah pro-Bush, pro-war speakers at the Republican National Convention? Hold on, this is the Internet...

*checks*

Yeah, they were there, talking about the pain of their loss and the need for a strong military response to terrorism, with Bush in command. I remember listening to it on the radio and feeling sickened by the way the Republicans were playing people's emotions for political gain.

So what's Coulter on about, again?

Ann Coulter is a media stalking horse. The Murdoch Machine has some trouble digesting 9-11 widows, or the parents of the war dead, or stuff like that--the things that push emotional buttons--so it sends out Ann Coulter in the first wave. She sounds crazy! No one would listen to her! And the Liberals fight her like crazy! But she puts the idea out there--she batters the spearheads down. Now everyone has heard the arguments to against, but in this shrill way, because they were used against a "lunatic". Sean Hannity then takes up a slightly more moderate line of the same argument. It goes from FOX-grade schlock to The Washington Times-grade pap, but it's teh same core issue, eg, "supporting the Administration".

"supporting the Administration".

Aw, just fuck the administration. Someone should remind the Republicans - and the general public - that "supporting America" and "supporting the Administration" are not the same thing. In fact, in some moments - like now, one could argue - it is exactly the opposite.

"Save America. Fuck Bush!" should be the Democrats' motto in the coming elections. (I'd say "Fuck Ann Coulter too", but that may sound sexist and I do not advocate r@pe as a form of debate warfare)
