So, I'm off to E3 tomorrow morning to check out games (a bit) and lap up the beach at Santa Monica and the sun (a lot).

Is there anything particular people are interested in? I'm more than happy to bring back tales of adventure and mayhem. Not that I'm going to be updating from the show, most likely, so you're not going to get anything that IGN or Gamespot isn't giving you - except my big fat opinions.

But if there's anything you really want to know - shout out and I'll scope it.

Have fun in that sun!

I'd like to hear your personal thoughts on;

World of Warcraft expansion - have they fooked the new alliance race? have they given alliance an 'ugly' race to off set the new horde race, given us pandas, or plan just gone barmey!

Warhammer: Mark of Chaos - Is it actually any good or just a sword and magic version of W4k? I've read good and bad bits from a few previews.

PS3/Wii - I think Nintendo have shot themselves in the foot again with making a easy (cheap) to make games for console, i could be wrong. First impressions of this years models, can you actually PLAY a PS3 this year?

I'll be checking Gamespot daily, but it would be good to have an inside view!

Yeah... if you can get some hands-on time with the Wii, definitely stop by to give us some of your impressions of it. I'm certainly not expecting it for a PS3 but that would be nice.

I'm interested in developer reactions to the new systems and their online capabilities. Would love to get some back-up on the idea that Nintendo might be getting it right in that regard.

And if you walk out with too much swag to carry back home, I'll pm you my address to help lighten the weight.

I'd be interested in your thoughts on the PS3. See if it really is living up to Sony's hype, whether the games look anything like those early rendered demos.

Oh, and MGS4, of course...

I've just realised how wrong I feel for thinking "Oh, I won't get any work done this week", simply because I'll be hunched over my screen getting all excited.

About E3, that is.

Why do I find these things so distracting? Is it wrong? Tell me it's ok. Validate me!!!

Things I want to know:

PS3 pad. Proper analogue shoulder triggers this time, or those stupid pads again?

PS3 backwards compatibility. Region free, or will a PAL PS3 only play PSX and PS2 games if they're also PAL?

SNK vs Capcom Cardfighers' Clash DS. All the info you can get.

PSP Metal Slug Collection. As complete as the Gradius collection wrt screen-resixing options (most importantly, does it allow original ratio display w/ no blurring) and so on?

I'm finding it very difficult to get excited about E3 this year. Badly burnt by the 360 being such a non-event to date. On which note, any signs of life on that front?

Suedey! SHOT FOR MEAT!

I find my excitement a little odd, because I haven't really been in to games much of late...

It's been all looking to new stuff, I guess. (New Super Mario! Wheredidyoucomefrom, hello!) So maybe that does make sense.

Definitely developer's reactions to the Wii. I'm excited about the potential of the console as a home for more innovative games, and I'm dying to hear what actual gamemakers think.

I love E3. I want to be there, man.

Now, I will be getting most of my information from the various gaming sites that I go to, (Deeko, IGN, 1UP, Gamespot…etc.)…so my questions for you, my fellow Barbelither, involve more of the social aspects of E3…The kind of stuff we won’t be able to here anywhere else. I want to hear what the people involved in this industry are like:

How badass is Kojima? Is Tommy Tallarico as slick as he looks on TV? Is your hotel room next to Miyamoto? Did you run into James Mielke in the can? What are some of the other journalists like? Do hang out with Dan “Shoe” Hsu? How hot are the booth-babes?

And Are we going to see your face on SpikeTV? Are we going to read any of your articles in EGM or some other published gaming mag?

And what kind of swag do you get? I heard this year all of the journalists are supposed to bring their PSPs to get free PS1 games loaded onto them. There are some sweet perks when you are invited to E3, and I want to know what the hell some of the less advertised ones are.

Yeah, I’m nosy about this, but it’s because I love it, and I want to be there.

And you can bet your ass that someday I will be.

Have fun at E3, you devil. Wear something loud and offensive so I'll recognize you in the backround of the television coverage.

PS3 pad, as explained here, does have proper triggers for L2/R2. And a tilt sensor, of all things. And it now looks exactly like a Dual Shock. $499/€499 for the basic one? Fuck off, Sony.

I'm honestly surprised that anybody's surprised by how expensive the PS3 is going to be. The 360 launched with a pretty hefty price tag and Sony were still making "it'll be expensive, but you pay for top of the range" noises. Blu-ray, large hard drive, online-enabled out of the box...

This doesn't mean that they're not taking the piss, though. Blu-ray is pointless - the extra capacity simply won't be used in any meaningful way. thing is, I'm sure that the only reason Sony have gone for it is because it's the only thing that distinguishes the console. 360 has Live, Wii has that controller. PS3 now has both, of course, which is pretty funny when you consider how they've previously slated them as misguided concepts (the motion-sensor is yet somthing else for Phil Harrison to perform a clumsy about-turn on).

Metal Gear Solid 4, of course, is hugely exciting - the new trailer is stonking. It isn't, however, £500 of exciting.

SUPER MARIO GALAXY!

I am really, really, just intrigued as to see how you actually play this thing... and wondering what the new Zelda will be like to play on the new console (and if it's actually worth bothering with that or the Cube version. Can't help feeling like the Cube version would feel lesser somehow, but don't know if the shoehorned new control will be annoying...).

And also: a game where you crush many robotos with a giant hammer, called Project H.A.M.M.E.R. no less. I appreciate this new naming tactic: EXCITE TRUCK!

Much DS goodness. Excited about Yoshi's Island 2 (will it continue the BEST GRAPHICS EVAR?) and new, following on from Wind Waker, Zelda.

Possibly I am only interested in the Wii because, well, I imagine it being the only one I can afford. Gone are the child-like days when I would work up to buying all the consoles through devious trickery and Christmas scams.

(slightly off-topic)

The trouble with fancy new consoles is that about a year after release PC games will have prettier graphics, and that 500 quid could be spent on upgrading the old grey box instead.

Not that I don't want a bunch of the console-only titles, but I want things that are on each platform, and would feel kind of cheesed off paying for one console and having to miss out on the other ones' games. With the current (previous?) generation, they weren't each terribly expensive, so it was easy enough to have a couple of the consoles. Now, though? Sheesh. It's a lot of money for a shallow games machine.

Spatula Clarke
16:04 / 10.05.06
But what your PC doesn't have is a magic wand controller. It will have eventually, inevitably, but what it'll still be missing out then is the comfort factor that'll be a required part of getting the most out of said controller.

It also won't have cross-title online gaming functionality with a single identity or payment scheme.

I think what you're possibly forgetting is that current consoles are cheap(ish) because they've been around for a while. Bar the Cube, of course, but Nintendo are increasingly a law unto themselves. Sega's Saturn was £399 when it was first released and Playstation £299. I bought one on release (after much saving up) and the other after a year or so, second-hand. That's the other thing - a second-hand console isn't going to be dated in the same way that a second-hand PC is.

I dunno. Comparisons between consoles and PCs have always struck me as being utterly misleading, because of the fundamental differences in the structure of both the relative industries and the hardware itself.

As far as "shallow games machine" goes, I'm not going to touch that with a bargepole for the time being.

Llama> No, not really. MGS buzzes my head in a way that few other series could ever hope to.

akira> There was a rumour to that effect doing the rounds in the run-up to this year's event. Seemed to start on message boards, though, so I wouldn't put much faith in it. Again, though, it's something that will almost certainly appear sooner or later.

I *heart* Nintendo. Feel like a child, right now. I swear I have never seen such an overwhelming amount of positivity for something game-related (this is possibly untrue), and they keep seeming to... y'know, do things right.

Even the whole Wii thing seems to be taking hold.

I can't help but be optimistic and hope it all really comes together. I'm seeing people post "What about the graphics?" "Who cares, WHAT ABOUT THE FUN?!!!" and I like that.

Ok, I'm going to cross all my fingers and toes (but not if that is actually BAD LUCK as I sometimes hear) and buy some lucky charms now.

This post has been brought to you by super double plus optimism. But don't it feel good? I am willing to put myself out there and have all my dreams be crushed, because I BELIEVE!!!! Go on, kill my innocence.

Things I'd want to know about:

Bioshock. How much of the team is from System Shock 2? How does it look? Is there anything resembling a plot, or is it all going to be derived from the AI?

Neverwinter Nights 2. How does the solo game look? Given Chris Avellone and the folks from Obsidian, how does it compare to BG2, Planescape, and the Infinity Engine games?

Thrillsville. Frontier's new roller coaster game, put out by LucasArts. Any info on this game at all?

Whee! Back now. That was one of the more ... placid E3's I've been to. So, big picture stuff first :

Third Person Action is the new FPS

Bloody TPA's everywhere. In swarms. Ranging from the pretty nice looking and fun to play (Dead Rising, Lost Planet) all the way through to the WTF happened (Too Human). \

Wii!

Wii is funky. Whether or not it was easy to control depends entirely on the game (Mario/Metroid = Amazing : Red Steel = crap) and the way they've implemented the controller. At the price (not yet announced, but most likely $200-250USD) seems like a no-brainer.

PS3

Wasn't impressed. By anything. The only games that looked kind of close enough to finished to make launch AND looked good were Revolution, Fall of Man (or whatever it's called) and Heavenly Sword. HS was basically just a God of War combat piece - apparently there's more to the game than that, though. Looked nice enough in HD - nice pastel colours made for an overall impression of difference. Didn't look noticably better than Viva Pinata, though.

Fall of Man looked like every console shooter you've ever seen dumped into a blender and pureed until it was grey. Absolutely nothing stood out. WWII environments. Grey aliens that looked like crap versions of Gears of War. Guns. No evidence of AI worth noting. Entirely blah. Visually okay, but really - if next gen means slightly more polys in my generic FPS then count me out.

The Quantic Dream (guys who did Farenheit / Indigo Prophecy) tech demo looked really neat. Like Facade with the potential of a game attached.

Contoller is a dual shock without rumble and with tilt sensors. That doesn't work nearly as well as you might hope in games like Warhawk - you have to press nine buttons and tilt multiple directions ... yeah. Apparently the developers only found out about the tilt sensor a couple weeks before the show, though, so it'll improve I'm sure.

Real triggers this time. Dev hardware felt a little flimsy - hopefully production controllers will have a bit more heft.

360

Lots and lots of mature looking 360 titles - the second gen is looking solid, if unexciting. Viva Pinata looked beautiful, if not my kinda thing. Prey looked like an actually interesting FPS. Many of the 3rd person shooters mentioned above. Some more interesting than others. Nothing amazingly standout.

DS Lite

So beatiful - what a stunning piece of hardware. People keep telling you the screens are really bright, but you don't get it until you see it. They're really bright. New Zelda makes me happy. New Mario! Gameplay!

PC

There's nothing under the sun that can convince me to play games on my PC these days. I work on one all day, I just don't want to play on one. Hellgate looked okay, but gameplay wise it felt about three years too late. I don't want to repeatedly click on enemies Diablo style anymore. Sorry.

Specific titles,

Bioshock

Visually outstanding. If it comes out on time (this year) it will be crap - most of the gameplay is only now starting to come online. Some members of SS2 team still around - many of the key ones. Plot for sure. If they finish it, of course.

Warhammer : Mark of Chaos

A little *too* like the tabletop for my liking. The new Dawn of War expansion looks sweet, though. Campaign map and the ability to upgrade your champion as you go. Very nice. It was made by all my old workmates, though, so I'm obliged to say that.

MGS4

Only a pre-rendered trailer. In an interview in the daily paper, Kojima very carefully said "We want everyone to know that this trailer is running 100% on PS3 hardware," - of course it is. It's a pre-rendered trailer, you fuck. The fact the PS3 can stream video off the DVD isn't exactly next-gen. Of course, the quote is intended to imply the trailer was RENDERED on PS3 hardware - given the way it looks compared to everything else at the show, that's clearly bollocks.

Dupre hardcore questions (Metal Slug resolution, Cardfighter Clash) - looked for developers on the floor to ask questions. Couldn't find. Hopefully IGN has real info for you (soz!)

Tabula Rasa Stand

No idea about the game. Heavy rock band and firetwirlers. Nothing can prepare you for the sheer amount of noise E3 generates.

Huxley

Looked ...okay. Not sure where the MMO element comes in - looked more like a 16 player deathmatch.

New Zelda

Plays pretty poorly on the Wii controller, actually. Plug a Gamecube controller in and play it properly seems to be the way to go, sadly. Mario Galaxy on the other hand - whoot!

What are developers like?

Being a developer rather than press, I don't get to meet most of the celebs. Especially the eastern ones. I do hang about with Clint Hocking a fair whack. He's a good bloke. Iwata had a chat with me at a restaraunt once. He's lovely, if very formal Japanese and surrounded by minders.
Swag

Sucked this year. Nothing worth getting - and very little even if you wanted inflatable plastic swords.

I dunno. Have you seen the video that's doing the rounds of a couple of The Kojima Productions guys (one of them might be Kojima, I forget) pissing around with the older trailer to demostrate that it *is* in-enigne? Changing light sources, camera angles and zoom, that kind of thing. This new trailer doesn't look any more impressive than that one, in technical terms. Kojima's people always get the best out of Sony's hardware and don't have a habit of trying to pass off pre-rendered footage as in-engine stuff. Call me naive, but I'm trusting him on this one.

Not that it makes me any more likely to spend £500 on a PS3, then another £55 on the game itself.

How's Dead Rising coming along in terms of control and all that? Screenshots and videos have suggested it's improving at a frightening rate, and each time something else is revealed I get that bit more excited for it.

Did you get to have a go on the US localisation of Ouendan? Elite Beat Agents, or something. I need to know about the soundtrack - the original's still the best thing on the DS.

Finally, it's got to be asked: Assassins' Creed. I don't know if you went there as an industry pro or a punter, but did you get to see the demo that Sony were pushing as a PS3-exclusive? More importantly, did you get to see the 360 that was rumoured to be hidden behind a curtain running the thing?

Well, at least that isn't as bad as in Europe. I get the feeling that they just change the $ into a €. So I'm betting it'll be around €600 here ($770), if other electronics are anything to go by. Perhaps €550.

I went and dug that video up. Does look convincing - some things that give me pause.

In the realtime setting, there's almost nothing else in the scene other than Snake. The background is very sparse - compared to the other vids we've been seeing there's very little going on.

BUT - definately looks more likely seeing them move around dynamically. There's a *lot* of geometry in Snake in that scene - it's very impressive.

So move me from "absolutely not" to "I think the game will look very similar to that. Mostly. Provided there's not too much going on."

Dead Rising actually had really nice controls and was just plain fun. Has gone from something I'm not really interested in to something I'll definately play - the only downside is that I don't think there's enough novelty to take it past being a rental. Was a lot of fun for 10 minutes, though.

Didn't get inside the Assassins Creed booth - press only. Certainly even if the demo is PS3 only, it's going to be a multiplatform release - expect the same basic game on PS3 and 360. Demo exclusives like that are purely spin.

I am excited about AC though - what I've seen looks and sounds mindblowing. Apparently the animation is a bit erratic atm, but they're a long way off. I fully expect it to be as good as it promises.

I'm just playing through MGS3 at the moment and one thing I've noticed is that the cut scenes, whilst plainly rendered on the game engine and being processed in real time, are far superior graphically to what I actually get to play with.
I'm not sure how much extra processing goes into making something interactive but I can't imagine it's that much. SO it got me to wondering how they've managed to get those cut scenes looking so good.
Part of me wonders whether, it being pre planned camera moves, large chunks of the environment have been removed and it's working a bit like a sound stage. (ie that which isn't on screen doesn't actually exist in the virtual environment.) This would save a fair amount of system resource I should imagine so possibly that's what's going on...
If they've adopted the same techniques for MGS4 it might explain why those pre-rendered videos look so lush.
Certainly, I'm with Randy and am inclined to believe it's genuine footage but I suspect the game won't look *quite* as good whilst it's actually being controlled.

Animation is pretty expensive - every character in the gameworld has a set of bones. So even if they're the same model/mesh/texture there's a decent hit for each one you add. AI is also expensive - again, each character has a decent impact.

Running through pre-canned sequences you can switch off the AI and drop all anims except the ones used in the scene, which buys you a fair bit more.

Your sound stage theory is pretty sound - except that's happening all the time. The game doesn't render the rest of the world - only what you see. And rendering is definately one of the more expensive operations.

Are they being processed in real time, though? I thought they were pre-rendered using in-game assets and then streamed. Hard to tell just by looking, but I'll have a look and see what I can find.
