I'm a bit astounded that nobody's mentioned Peake and the Gormenghast trilogy yet. Predates Gaiman, yes, but has that fantastic-mundane blend (except that while Gaiman tends to inject the fantastic in mundane settings, Peake has an utterly mundane fantastic world... read it and you'll see what I mean).
I like Gaiman okay, because he writes good characters, but Peake is the unparalleled master of creating people you'll never forget. Steerpike constantly jostles for position as my favourite fictional villain of all time. |
