I'd like to chip in as another who does read P&H regularly but doesn't post. I do enjoy reading it (with the exception of those 'why can't I delete this thingy I tried to delete' type threads) and I do think it's a main attraction in the magical theme park of Barbelith.

One of the main reasons that I don't post there is that I don't post a great deal anywhere. I come and read an awful lot, but because I not a vocal member of the 'lith in general, I don't feel that I have as much at stake in the community than others. Or rather, that my 'stake' could only be measured by others who can only go by my investment in terms of posting, which might call into question any bold statements or accusations I might bandy around in P&H....

I do think that if something came up in policy about which I felt strongly I would chip in, but only if (as ibis says) my point hadn't already been made a hundred times over already. Which it usually has, so far.

Although an interest in Barbelith is indeed something that we all have in common, my interest in Barbelith itself as an organic, self-governing work in progress is a sideline to my interest on the things that people on Barbelith say. If that makes sense.

Ah, mebbe not. Just wanted to say that I do visit P&H quite a lot.

One reason it's hard to get started in P&H is that the threads are HUGE, as are the posts themselves. If you're not a regular there, it takes a very long time to catch up.

I visit P+H every time I pass through here.

The only reason I don't post is because it is, to be fair, a little hard to crack into because of the reasons above - thread length and content, mostly.

Also, the fact that some times I still feel like a kid at an Adult's party when I'm in P+H, trying to look cool by laughing at jokes I don't get, means I think I'm best off leaving it alone for the forseeable future. I'll keep reading, though.

I love Policy and Help, even if it is a recently acquired love (i.e. the last few months). I read it everyday, but I only post there if I feel I have something of value to add. Since I’m not a moderator (yet, did I mention I’m willing to give out free cupcakes to be elected a moderator? It’s not bribery when there’s no evidence left behind), I generally don’t feel a need to add things to the “Moderation Requests” thread, for example. Which means I’m one of the people more visible when there’s actually a big time debate. But still, I’m totally there everyday.

I'd hope that people would come to Policy when they're aware that something 'big' is happening, even if they can't be arsed with it the rest of the time. Part of my reasoning in pushing for the ShadowSax thing to be started in a different thread, for example, was that it might then be framed/couched in such a way that everyone would feel welcome to comment.

A question for those who feel bored/intimidated/excluded by Policy threads: how might you be alerted/tempted to post on threads like the ShadowSax one, where community input is vital?

Too many people with such monstrously large egos that, despite their obvious intelligence and ability, they refuse to punctuate or to use capitals.

Hmmm, this thread is interesting. But it's difficult to make places like the Headshop or the Policy seem less intimidating to newbies if they don't tell us what they want. What would the forums you don't post in have to be like to make you think "Aah, I'm going to find time to post here now"?

I don't know if certain fora should change to accomodate the newbs. Obviously they shouldn't exclude them, but i think things like policy and help will only become less daunting over time.

A big part of the whole 'daunting' thing is just that, as a n00b, I just don't quite know how this community works yet. I don't quite feel like i fit it yet, but that pretty much how joining any kind of community will work. I've started reading P&H, but as yet have had little to say on it. I suspect this will change as i read more and get more of a feel for the kind of discussion that is held there.

So i don't really have a list of demands or anything. I don't know if we need to ask that fora be 'like' something else in order to accomodate us.

um, i guess i've figured out in my one foray into p & r that i don't feel like i'm on equal footing yet when i'm engaged in debates here, especially if the person i'm having a disagreement with is someone who's been here for a while. and given that i'm a generally opinionated person who has a hard time keeping her mouth shut (it's a miracle i lasted this long not responding to this thread), i've just decided not to read p & r for a while until i feel like people know me well enough and that i wouldn't get (i feel) unjustifiably snarked at or flamed because my words are being interpeted without the context of a posting history.

Mm. To add to my first post: I do read El Policy a lot during any given week as I find the metaworkings of Blith really interesting.

I am a dirty polilurker.

When I'm on Barbelith, P&H is always one of the first subforums I read

How bizzare. I just accidentally posted.

To continue, I partly always go to P&H because I'm interested in the whole "community-building" aspect of Barbelith.

This reason for not posting is probably pretty unique to me. But the only reason that I haven't been posting there at all recently is that I've only just rectified my incredibly spotty Internet access. And out of all the forums it feels like the one least conducive to "casual" posting.
