What does it say about the state of the American media when Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart are two of the most respected and intelligent figures?

I thought his speech was hilarious. And, hoenstly, I won't be surprised if he ends up 'disappeared' and turns up in Gitmo a few years later or no one ever finds his body. Because he brutalized the administration on a dinner that was, for all intents and purposes, a brownnosing dinner.

What concerned me though was his comment about "that novel about the bold Washington reporter who stands up to a corrupt administration, you know, fiction." As it stands now, the American media doesn't do much to criticize the administration for fear of losing privelege. There seems to be the "Bush is great" camp and the "Bush has made a few mistakes but he's not terrible" camp but there's no option for "the administration has made one failure after anohter so lets analyze them critically and give suggestions as to make things better" camp.

I just await the day when I flip by Fox News and Bill O Reilly has his talking point about "The ability to cure scrofula by touch is necessary for the function of any President."

Completely late on the game, didn't knew barbelith had a mention on Colbert. Could have been more fun at the time he did the speech if I knew there was a discussion here...

Also glad I'm not the only one who likes him in Harvey Birdman. For me that show is pure Seaguy, plus nostalgia poked fun in x ways. (Ah-HA! "Poked"!) Just sad that Phil got out of the show (even though his exit was too good and too funny -- hit-taken by a bus with "Colbert Report" ad on the it's side).

And I find it weird there aren't more busy threads on Daily Show and Colbert -- even if they're far from their best lately (although these shows are more like rollercoasters feeding itself from the news, ups and downs; and Colbert has to update himself with the times every month -- Curious to see how his angle will be if democrats take the white house in '08).

But I'm very mad there's no Birdman thread. That thing is genious.

I could swear that I started one, but I can't find it. Must have been a sick-dream.

He announced, I think the day before yesterday, he'll be running for presidency.

He'll be running only in the South Carolina primary. Right now he's trying to get on both the Democrat and Republican tickets.

Still, given the fact that he'll essentially be a candidate that folks can use in place of a "None of the Above" slot on the ballot, it could be an interesting gauge of how enthused (or not) voters are with the actual candidates available for 2008.
