Maybe it's just because it took me *months* to be approved and only at the intervention of a member, but now that I'm here, I'm feeling a bit alienated and confused. A couple of questions:

1. A number of the forums don't get responses on a regular basis, and I get kinda tired of checking. Is this a seasonal thing or is it possible that there aren't enough members? It just seems strange that when I respond to a post about "Possession" in the Books section, it's still the most recent response like five hours later.

2. Any tips on how to knda jump in? I feel like it's hard for me to put my two cents into threads that are hundreds of responses long, with people responding to each other who have a well-established history. And maybe the threads that I've started so far are just boring, or somehow I haven't gotten the hang of Barbelith culture yet, or people are less inclined to respond to a newbie, but I'm having trouble penetrating the existing Barbelith social structure.

Any and all tips to become a productive member of this community would be helpful, because I really do want to be an active participant. I somehow just don't know quite how yet.

1. Depending on where you are located, responses sometimes seem like they are taking an incredibly long time mainly because someone's always hours ahead, or hours behind.

2. It can seem daunting at first to try and jump in on threads, but honestly, you've just got to hang in there. Step up and be heard.

Nice to meet you, BTW.

Welcome sibyline

It happens all the time, that forums and threads don´t have much traffic. Don´t worry about that, and post where you want to copntribute.

And don´t block yourself by figuring out how to contribute to huge threads. Either read them and post, if they catch your interest. Or contribute to new threads, until you feel more at ease. There are new threads around the board every day.

Hi there, welcome aboard!

Well, Books is just a bit quiet. It always has been, ever since I've been here. As for jumping in--well, I feel ya. It's always hard to know where to start in a new comm where everybody seems to know each other. You're wise to hold of on posting to some of the more involved threads; once something's got six pages long, you're very likely to duplicate points that have already been raised if you jump in without reading thoroughly, and then people get all tetchy.

The Convo is a good place to get your feet wet as it's more informal. Just start a new thread on something that interests you.

Books in particular can be very slow- the likelihood of a large amount of people reading/having read a particular book at a particular time is a lot lower than that of people having just bought, say, a new album or a just-released comic. It's more often than not worth the wait, though.

And yeah, just pile in. It worked for me, at any rate. We'll try not to bite.

I appreciate your finding threads with many many posts daunting rather than simply posting a "I haven't read this thread, but…" Those don't go over well.

I've looked around for threads you've started (found 2) and they seemed like fine threads to me. I think the advice you've been given so far is good.

It took me a long time to get the hang of starting threads that people were interested in responding to, and I still start a number of— well, really boring ones, I guess, because a lot of them sink to the bottom of the page without a single response. It happens. It's not because people don't like you.

I guess post thoughtful. Post things which you expect to raise more questions than answers. Go for the complexity, if it's your style.

Which fora most interest you? They all have different flavors and different norms, and some of them are easier to break into than others— like Convo vs. Headshop, for one extreme example.

see, that's the thing. i wasn't necessarily looking for advice. i'm more interested in starting dialogues, but somehow, i'm still a little bit self-conscious, like that girl at the party who's not sure whether she's going to be asked to dance.

i can dance.

Read anything that interests you. If you're going to respond to a thread, read the whole thread first (it wins you brownie points, really). Don't be afraid to speak up. Remember that people who have been here forever aren't actually a scary group, they're just super awesome. And they want to share their awesomeness with you.

Sibyline: I hear you! Just stay persistent and polite, and sooner or later you'll break through the ice.

And yes, the posting rate is slow in general hereabouts; I noticed that too, and have been known to troll around (in the fishing sense, not the fires-and-horns sense) looking desperately for anything new to read or reply to. Ehrm. Might I suggest looking through the archives? There're no penalties for necromancy here, so feel free to revive a years-old thread if you feel you have something worthwhile and new to add to it.

It also isn't just a function of how boring or interesting the question is; it's also a matter of whether anyone else has much background in it. I fairly often see a post that I think could start a very interesting discussion, but not a very interesting discussion with me.

Come to think of it, I think that one reason Barbelith is one of the few places I post on-line is that (at times) it's like the online equivalent of the slow food movement (in some ways--the lightning speed of the Feminism 101 thread of recent memory notwithstanding). I visited my belle soeur in France recently and had a bunch of (shock) really good meals. One meal lasted more than 5 hours. It was fabulous.

I came back and went to a conference in Chicago one day later. After a day of meetings with people who I really like but don't get to see very often--and we hadn't had a chance to just "talk" yet--we sat down to a very good meal in a very nice restaurant. I found that I had taken two bites of my salad when they were ready to take it away. Ditto the soup. Ditto the main course... Wait! I wanted to say, and kind of did say, but the plates eventually just piled around me...

Some threads on Barbelith develop very slowly; some start very slow and then suddenly develop a fiery interest (here I'm thinking of the Femme discussion in the Headshop), and then linger. Some just hang on for years, periodically being given the Lazarus treatment. Some of course are never likely to go anywhere, but it remains true, I think, that some just haven't gone anywhere yet.

Some of those may be like an old grand cru that shouldn't be touched for a few years while the thought comes of age...ok ok, before this analogy chokes on its own stomach acid, I like that about the place.

And kudos for starting threads. I start almost none, myself, but I admire people who stick their necks out and give it a go, particularly if it's clear they've really made an effort to appeal to the community's interests, intellects, and love of whimsy.

You get what you put into things. If you post a bunch on other peoples threads, then people will notice your name, and at the same time we all get a flavor of what you are about.

Also while posting on others threads you get a sense of belonging. I think that the Barb (and it took me a while to figure this out) naturally smiles on those that are not concerned about how many responses they have to their topics, but how much they contribute to the community as a whole.

Oh, and there is nothing funner than getting in on one of those big threads at the begining and following it through to see it grow to hundreds of responses. I cant speak for anyone else, but it gives me this strange sense of importance, I can come in and click on page four and think to myself, "I know exactly whats going on here".

And dont be overwelmed by those giant threads, take an hour and read through one at some point, very educational.

I think the best thing to do, Sybiline, would be to pick a fight with someone like haus or Jack Fear, one of those guys who just can't let anything go. You'll look like a jerk for a little while, but you can correct that over time.

Prison rules, in other words--walk up to the biggest guy in the room and punch him in the face. That way we'll all see what you're made of.

I think that whole 'prison rules' strategy only works out ok if you're in a movie. I mean, I don't actually know, but going up to the biggest guy in the room and punching him in the face would actually lead to you getting stomped in front of everyone, rather than just looking like a bit of a jerk for a while. And that's not a good thing, surely? No, *don't* show everyone what you're made of, not unless you're, well, the biggest guy in the room.

I'm talking about prison rather than barbelith now. On barbelith, yeah, go for it. Big argument with Jack Fear. That'd be nice to watch.

he's like the fist fairy.

toksik- please don't link to that.

Much as I love Denfeld, that scares me. He's a scary man when he wants to be. And by golly, I don't want to be there when the urge takes him.

i'm just loving the mental image of jack as the fist fairy...
in my minds eye he smokes cigars and wears little fairy wings, a tutu and hobnail boots.
he kinda looks a bit like a punchier spiwicz from NYPD blue, and he's topped his outfit off with elbow length veterinary gloves.

right now he's dancing that dance from gilda, peeling back rubber with a gleam of maleviolence(tm) in his eye that can only be described as erotic.

i blame the guarana in my chewing gum.

Also, sybiline, the delay in your approval was because our approval system was a mess, not because anyone was holding you back. We all do this in our spare time. It's not like applying to Cornell or something.
