Myspace a waste of space?

I never thought I'd see an advantage for Friendster over anything, but it certainly makes a kinder verb.

I can't figure out how Myspace became so ubiquitous as a music promotional tool -- I find it so unfriendly compared to garageband or the mp3.com of yore.

Quoted without comment.

You got something to say about my music choices, or at least a sample of it? Other than Rod Stewart?

Young Hearts, Run Free - can't go wrong with that shit. I think early Rod is totally legit.

On-topic: I totally thought myspace was just for folks in bands, hence the embedded tunes, just to basically hawk their wares. That's really my primary and overriding exposure to it.

So Matt, can we get rid of the photo's? Nothing personal, I swear. It's just making me feel uncomfortable, for the reason I've already stated.

Requested a delete already. Sorry to cause discomfort. I was only trying to poke fun of people's photos which featured the "angles," as per the MySpace movie, upthread.

I getcha. No worries. I didn't think you were being deliberately malicious. It's just that it could have been easily read that way.

Cheers, comrade.

Yeah, well, fine, if people like Rod Stewart that's their choice and I was being snarky. Thanks for removing the pictures.

I've got a myspace to promote my films, and I have to say that it's been quite helpful so far. It makes it a lot easier to message people about new projects, and it is a pretty useful networking tool. I've set up two music video directing jobs through My Space, so it's worked out for me.

And as a fan, it makes it a lot easier to keep track of when a band has a show, and that sort of thing. So, it might not be essential, but Myspace has definitely helped me out.

Who's trying something new with social networking? Something that breaks the MySpace paradigm? Surely, one of those Web Two-Point-Ohs has an Ajax doohickey that thinks differently?

Is it normal to receive spam friend requests? Someone sent me a request saying I looked cool, but the only pictures on my page are of my "friends".

And grant, I like that song of yours that is playing.

I get spam messages all the time from different "Sara"s. I just delete them.

Oh, thanks!

I actually have two Myspace pages -- because it's pretty hard to convert a regular page to a music page (why are they classified differently? What is the point?). And there's a thing with the music playing that bugs me -- I hate the way the songs automatically start, but it's even worse if you want to befriend/network with that band, because when you hit the "Add to Friends" link, the song abruptly cuts off.

I can't browse the thing when listening to other music in headphones without making myself unhappy.

But yes, the song -- I think my page goes randomly, so whichever one it is, I'm glad you like it.

This is very disheartening.

I just got a friend request from "emilyhot".

I sent you a request. I just figured it had been denied.

Eh, I deny people sometimes, if they have absolutely no reason to be on my friends list.

There's one guy who keeps sending me friend requests, and I think he's kind of a knob, so what I do is accept the request and then immediately go in and delete him from my list. I've done it like 8 or 9 times. He sent me a message saying "why aren't you accepting me, don't you like me?" and I said "I've accepted your requests, I don't know what the problem is, must be a glitch in the system." I think it's driving him nuts.

That's why I don't usually send friend requests. Or have friends in real life for that matter. I'm always thinking "Why would this person want to be friends with me?"

grant- Nanomites was the song.

Kali- I like your new layout.

Might it be time to commit MySpacecide?

I don't know what made me delete it. It just looked ugly: the page layout, the blue writing. I felt like a sheep, letting social pressures, memes and fads herd me around. I wondered why I needed yet another social networking website to check: After all, I was already on Friendster and Japanese network Mixi, not to mention LiveJournal, a network organized around daily content rather than mere profiles and links. Mostly, I just wondered why I needed to affirm tenuous affiliation with a new set of ghosts.

From that page, I find this suggestion v interesting. I wonder if and when it'll come true as an online trend.

"The thing to be now is untraceable," he told me. "Wipe every reference to yourself off the internet. Make yourself ungoogleable. Why tell criminals, corporations or the government all that stuff about yourself? Why do the spies' job for them?"

It sounds like something from the next William Gibson novel.

Just a reminder (esp. for those punting out writing, art or music via myspace):

Proprietary Rights in Content on MySpace.com.
By displaying or publishing ("posting") any Content, messages, text, files, images, photos, video, sounds, profiles, works of authorship, or any other materials (collectively, "Content") on or through the Services, you hereby grant to MySpace.com, a non-exclusive, fully-paid and royalty-free, worldwide license (with the right to sublicense through unlimited levels of sublicensees) to use, copy, modify, adapt, translate, publicly perform, publicly display, store, reproduce, transmit, and distribute such Content on and through the Services. This license will terminate at the time you remove such Content from the Services. Notwithstanding the foregoing, a back-up or residual copy of the Content posted by you may remain on the MySpace.com servers after you have removed the Content from the Services, and MySpace.com retains the rights to those copies.

Does "This license will terminate at the time you remove such Content from theServices" not mitigate against much in the way of danger, though?

I heard Murdoch was intending to exert more control over content when he buys it, banning amateur porn pics etc. is that true?
And, can you host pics on myspace?

Yeah, Flybs, but I thought that final paragraph sort of mitigated the mitigation. It's confusing.

I just got a myspace page this week- i'm using it for work stuff- displaying my showreel etc.

On the denying friends thing i seem to be doing it much much more than accepting them- i never realised there were so many really shit bands out there- but i get about 4-5 approaches per day- DENIED!

My SO has a MySpace page, and I don't really get it - it's kinda ugly isn't it? And rather confusingly laid out. But I don't think it's unhealthy or anything, she and I met on Flickr so we're hip with the whole 'spending mountains of time online' thang.

This thread reminded me I had one - I'm shocked that there are quite a few people from Elgin that one and that's even a group for Elginers.

Isn't that top 8 friends thing a bit weird? Wouldn't people ask why they are no longer in your top 8?

This is me

I need to add lists and some sort of background that makes the text unreadable.

"I can't figure out how Myspace became so ubiquitous as a music promotional tool -- I find it so unfriendly compared to garageband or the mp3.com of yore."

I think it's a great idea for bands to have a myspace page. It's cheap and effective. I like the music player feature. Bands can upload mp3s/pictures/tour dates for free and it's easily accessible to the public. Myspace Music makes a great 'online press-kit'. It's a temporary solution until they find the time & money to build a band website. I've discovered so many new bands through bands/users' profile pages. If like XYZ band, chances are I will like some of the bands that are on their friends list, or their top 8.

I like myspace more than mp3.com because the bands are embedded in our personal network (myspace); whereas mp3.com is just a network of bands-to-bands. This feature benefits me because I work in the music industry. I have received commissioned work through myspace because my friends/coworkers are connected to musicians/labels/etc.

SO is myspace (and things like message boards, livejournals, etc ) a waste of time? I don't think so. People just need to learn how to use internet technology like this to their own advantage.
