"I don't trust those scary atheists, with their 'being' and 'nothingness'. They give me the willies!"

Well that seems pretty comprehensive to me

How many households would be comprehensive?

Man, that Texas law just adds to my list of reasons why Texas makes me feel icky...

The Texas Constitution says "acknowledge the existence of a Supreme Being". AFAIK, Buddhists don´t believe in that. So, a buddhist could not hold an office in Texas?

I doubt they would. Depends what you mean by supreme being of course, but there are several religions that wouldn't seem to meet the criteria, such as Taoists, Pagans, Jains, some Hindus etc.

Well, really - as an atheist, it doesn't really matter to me if I lie - it's not like I'm going to hell for denying, um, nothing. So hell, Supreme Being? Sure, of course.

But it's pretty appalling - I can't quite believe that's real, that they get away with that. What about the separation of church and state?

If for some reason you were to take office there, the problem would be that political opponents could pounce on the fact you're an atheist, and therefore lied when taking your oath. Thing is, there's no other way for you to take office there.

Well, it *is* Texas...

Spyder, dude, come on. You can't have a go at all Texans everywhere just because some bunch of fuckheads made a stupid law happen in their state.

Yeah, the problem would be if the Texans (or the majority of them) agree with said bunch of fuckheads.

How about we make a phone survey?

Somehow I think that in Texas, having your political opponents call you out for lying would be the least of your problems. An atheist in public office? That's torches and pitchforks territory right there.

Oh, no, I have a lot of issues with the majority of Texas for completely separate reasons (thinking they're better than every other state, Tom DeLay, being the home state of the majority of my mother’s extended family (they’re all crazy rednecks), huge wastes of land and resources, et cetera). This is just one more.

Then again, I hate the majority of my country right now. I’m just in a hateful mood, I suppose.
