This isn't Haus - it's someone pretending to be him, for whatever reason. Weirdly, this suit appears to have been used for at least semi-normal posting in the past.

This, therefore, isn't a friendly request for a drink - it's a very deliberate attempt to impersonate someone, and lure their friends and acquaintances to a pub it's known that Barbelith people do drink in, under false pretences and with God knows what intentions.

It's all distinctly creepy, bordering on terrifying. Prior to this point, in The Gathering myself and other Barbelithers in London and beyond have been fairly open in naming times and places where we intend to meet. However, I know that there are people who exercise more caution than that - I've always thought that was a shame, and wanted to keep to a principle that, even if it does just end up being the same dozen people, theoretically a Barbelith gathering is open to anyone from the board to turn up to. You would think, wouldn't you, that anyone who had bad blood with the board simply wouldn't want to turn up? You would think that it wouldn't be necessary for people here to arrange their meet-ups with other Lithers in private, let alone to give a wide berth to a pub they might otherwise drink in? But it appears you might be wrong.

We should have, like, a colour coded Alert system like DefCon. I'd put this at Troll Alert level BEIGE.

That's really worrying. WTF? I thought it was impossible to use a fictionsuit that had already been used once (and I know that Haus definitely did use that name a while ago).

I shudder to think I nearly put my home address on my birthday thread. I thought I was being a bit paranoid, clearly not. Who are these people? The ususal suspect?

I think Haus went by the name "Haus Heart Hearth Home", whereas this chilling muppet used the similar name "Haus Heart Home Hearth"

Jeesus. This is worrying stuff.

Is there any disagreement that this suit should be locked and/or burned?

A large part of me started to think:

"Fuck it. Fuck you. I'll be fucking fucked if I'm going to stop fucking drinking in a fucking pub I drink in because of you, you cretinous fucking half-wit. See you there."

Now, I've calmed down a bit since then. But I'm not entirely convinced this is an entirely bad idea. I'm not talking about engineering a confrontation. I'm talking about setting a precedent that says that whoever this person is, they don't get to scare us away from the places in which we already choose to socialise. What do people think? PM me if you're feeling less than inclined to discuss all of this here.

Given that not a great many people read the Policy or Gathering, might it be worth moving this thread to the Conversation - or post another heads up there?

Er, chaps, it's not worth even thinking about getting into any kind of situation which might result in anyone getting banned from that pub.

Exactly.

I was joking. Sort of.

I wouldn't stop going to a pub just because some fuckwit- who may not even live in London - is impersonating a friend of mine. I'd be happy to accompany Flyboy should he wish to go, that's all.

...or beating a stranger senseless with sticks. Tempting though it is.
I must admit I'm not feeling very scared, but it is enormously irritating. If I could get to London tonight I'd be there out of curiosity, it would be an interesting meet.

No, it's a very stupid and very bad idea. But interestingly, I don't really give a fuck.

I'd be surprised if yr stalker actually turns up or reveals himself, now that you're all expecting him.

Yeah, I reckon it’s extremely unlikely we’d see hide nor hair of this person, and a plank-fight less likely still. I expect we’d have a perfectly ordinary evening in the pub. Which is quite tempting actually.

This is really bizzare. What a weird thing to do. Also don't think they'd reveal themselves at the pub. That's of they are actually in London. Isthere anyway for Tom to find out the location of the saddo?

I think this is much more likely an attempt to scare and intimidate, using barbelith, rather than to confront anyone in real life. As has been said, barbelith London gatherings happen pretty regularly, and are often openly advertised in advance - if someone wanted to turn up and actually confront anyone, they could just wait for a meet to happen. Instead, this doofus has been waiting for at least 28 days to post a 'scary' thread.

Yeah, an ordinary evening in the pub seems like a rather good response. People who have friends having a pleasant drink with those friends.

God, but this is depressing stuff, though.

He's taken the name of a pub that frequently appears in Gathering, that is a pub that we occasionally attend and stolen the old suit of one of our people in order to freak some of us out.

This person could have attended any gathering advertised in the forum in the last few years and spied on us. As far as we are aware this hasn't happened. Let's exercise a little perspective here.

Seeing as the pub in question's virtually my second front room, I refuse to be intimidated!

But like Smoothly, I think there's very little chance of this guy showing up. And even if he does, really, what's he likely to do, except possibly beam out teh bad magycke vibezz from a chai in the corner? Not wishing to sound excessively 'Iron Grandma' about this, but he hasn't actually threatened anyone, has he?

I wouldn't be surprised if this person actually is Haus. I mean, we've already established that Ganesh and Flyboy are just psuedonyms that this Haus guy uses to make cheap pot shots at other peoples' wives. So it's not too much of a stretch of the imagination to speculate that all of our recurrent trolls and stalkers are indeed just this sick Haus character playing some complex and malevolent game with us all. Lock your doors tonight. Don't take any chances.

What was the impostor's previous name?

I ask because a few days ago (using someone else's computer) I noticed another member had put "Haus" in their name. Unfortunately, and much to my shame, at the time I had to log out in a hurry, failed to make a note of this name, and have since forgotten the full nomenclature. (sorry) However, I've got a few hours free-time this evening and will go through the members list with a fine tooth-comb in an attempt to find it; just in case this marks the beginning of a disturbing new trend.

Sorry for posting such incomplete information, but I thought I should bring this to everyone's attention now while I've got a spare half-hour. In the words of John Stalker, "Keep 'em peeled."
