A son.

I'm really hating that wiseass abstract now.

Like my daughter, from Chongqing Municipal District, but further up the Three Gorges, at Yunyang. Internet tells me it's a place known for ancient horse burials and for a temple to a general said to give good winds to the junk-sailors. I used to sail on a waterway a lot, and I love the wind connection.

His Chinese name is Yang Fu Huang -- I haven't seen the characters yet, but I'm pretty sure the Fu Huang means "Lucky King" or "King of Good Fortune." Not positive.

I'm going to go take a walk now.

It is indeed very exciting. I hope everything goes well for you. And it makes me think of something I could do in 5 or 10 years....

Much congratulations and big kudos to you, Grantster.

Now you have a real excuse for not throwing out all your comics and boys' toys. "B-but... he might want them, one day."

He was born last June, so 8 months old.

The circumcision debate will be joined in earnest between me and my American family.

Oh, but the keeping of the comics! Oh, glory!

Your family are really into circumcism? Do they have anything resembling a sensible argument?
What a pain in the, um, cock.

"When he gets old enough, the girls will think it looks funny."

Argh!

But we haven't started in earnest yet, so I should marshall my reserves. (Or is it "marshal" with one "l"?)

Boys, by the way, are often overlooked in China's orphanages -- anecdotally, but during the last go-round, out of seven families traveling with us, two wound up with boys, and older boys were in evidence around the orphanage. People automatically assume China=girls, but the whole "abandonment" thing is really complicated & multi-factorial -- not just families wanting daughter/needing son, but also single moms in factory towns and so on. It's a system laden with sorrow.

Anyway, not overlooked in this case.

If only -- I'm talking about the young master's mother, in part.

Perhaps strategically applied superglue will fool her.....

Oh yes. Start them as early as possible, I say.

Maybe hold off a little while on the 'Grendel', tho. ;-)

I have little to add, save reinforcing boboss' comment. Do they really have a good argument to support said genital mutilation? (Sorry, I have strong reservations on the subject)

Well done, Grant. Great stuff.

Good luck. Perhaps you should tell the family you plan to let *him* decide when's he older, if he does, indeed, "feel funny". I came across a great article about this a while back, I'll PM you if I can remember when/where.

The "Huang" comes from the characters for "emperor" and "fire," and thus means "bright."

Nightmare story in the Washington Post yesterday about gangs of Chinese baby-snatchers.

I'm inclined to believe the view of Brian Stuy, the researcher quoted in the article that the baby snatching thing isn't necessarily related to the international adoption thing. (Not just because it makes me less prone to catatonia and weeping, but also because 16 months is *way old* in adoption terms, not likely to turn a profit for the eager international baby marketeer.)

Still, not sleeping well. On the other hand, domestic adoption are going up in China, so, uh, that's something.

It's looking like five weeks from now. Although if it's six from now, it'll really be seven because of May Day, which is (surprisingly enough) a really big deal in China, what with the communism and the workers and all.

There's more on the official response to the baby snatching thing out on the wires now. OK, nix wires, out on the web. Stricter regs in the orphanages being suggested by national officials. Still disturbing, but nice that there's some kind of... attention.

In less disturbing news, we seem to have settled on a name. A Western name. (As opposed to his r?míng, or "milk name.")

Although Seth will possibly be distraught to learn that he, after much debate in House Balfour, will not be the young lad's namesake (dashing hopes for a Gnostic two-fer), we've stuck with the same monogram.

Sebastian.

Sebastian Rae Huang Iain Balfour. (Got a saint, got both grandfathers' middle names in there, rolls nicely off the tongue, and, emphatically, doesn't spell out the word "shrub.") As well as the saint (who's one of the orisha, too, dont'cha know), it's also the name of an older cousin who supplied me with science fiction novels with naked ladies in them when I was young and easily led astray.

OK, so longer than usual after receiving our TA (travel approval) from the Chinese government, we finally got our CA (consulate appointment) from the U.S. government. They sat on it a while, like a mother hen on a hatching egg. But now, it's way ripe -- meaning, we have to leave next week. Next Tuesday, actually, as far as I can tell now.

Am I ready? No. It doesn't matter. I'm going.
