Will anyone be attending the first annual New York Comic Con? I've heard from various sources that a surprising number of pros from around the world will be attending, and hopefully it will be enough of a success to become an annual event. It can't possibly compete with the sheer scale of the San Diego con, but hopefully it will turn out to be one of the better second-tier shows. New York is my favourite city, so any excuse to go there...

...and as it happens, I will be there. I'm not listed on the programme schedule but according to my editor I will be on the Vertigo panel at 6pm on Friday Feb 24th, where my new project (which I've already been working on for months now, and I've been itching to talk about for more than a year) will be announced.*

Come and say hi if you see me!

*It's not Seaguy 2, and in fact it's not with Grant at all, but I hope to be working again with him soon.

I'll be around at some point in the weekend. Will you be at any table specifically?

Nope. I should be at the DC booth for part of the weekend, check there, they should have a signing schedule set up.

I would suggest you come over to the UK for a comic convention, but i'm not sure there would necessarily be the budget there to pay for your flight over...

I'll be around all 3 days...scouring quarter bins and attending panels. It appears that if this one has a decent turn out, they may try to groom this to be the "east coast San Diego" in the future....

I would love to come over for one of the UK shows - it's been far too long since I've been in England and it would provide just the excuse. If you know any of the organizers, see if you can get me on their short list...

I'll definitely be there. I normally don't go in for dorky signing wankery but I'd love to get something signed by you, Cam. You're my fav'rit. [/stalker] Glad to hear you'll be there.

I am curious to find out what the attendance is going to be like -- professionally speaking, it sounds like a great con and everyone seems to be putting a lot into it, but a few people I've talked to have had sticker shock about the admission price ($25 for one day)... guess it can't be helped, with such an expensive venue.

It seems like the NY ComicCon was a huge success; the NYC media covered it pretty extensively, even lots of coverage in the days just before it. And many of you may have heard about the fact that on the final day, many many people were turned away because it had sold out and was filled to capacity (some of whom had already bought tickets in advance and were pissed!). Apparently NYC police were brought in at one point to contain the overflow of angry people.

At least it was a huge success and next year they should plan for more space. Cameron, how was your convention experience? I'm glad that NYC, the publishing center of much of the comics industry, finally has its own major convention. Joe Quesada said in opening remarks in one of his panels that he'd waited 13 years to say "Welcome to the New York City ComicCon!"

The con was almost successful to a fault - I've heard that as many as 6000 (!) people were turned away, and the huge, slow-moving lines and densely crowded convention floor weren't much fun for anyone. It's a good thing that it wasn't deserted, but they really should have anticipated the massive crowd. Hopefully next year they get a larger space for the show, and that the people who got burned (I have horrible thoughts of people driving or flying from two states over, or other countries, and beng denied access) aren't pissed enough that they won't try again next year.

My personal experience was fine - I actually spent as little time as possible on the con floor, as I really enjoy New York and wanted to make the most of being in the city.

All in all I'd much rather go to future New York Cons than San Diego...

Yeah, I heard that some people had driven from a few states away and were pretty upset. They'e gotta plan big for next year, definitely.

I was there, and in fact ran across you at one point, Cam, but I was too slow-witted to say anything at that moment. You might have been chatting up Dan Goldman, but much of the Con is smeared together in my brain that I could be confusing separate incidents.

So, anyone going this year? I'll be there Friday and Saturday, checking out at least some of the many panels with Grant. It's not quite San Diego level, but definitely getting more impressive guests each year.

I'm there again this weekend, but I'm not there in any official capacity. If anyone recognizes me then please feel free to say hello but I doubt I'll be sitting at any booths this year. I'm there for the socializing!

I'm hoping to see the spotlights on Morrison and Mignola, on Saturday. And maybe Gail Simone but she's like six hours later.

I wasn't planning on going at first, but was invited by my local comics store staff, who mentioned an afterparty as well...

Pretty awesome day at the con today. I got sketches from Phil Jiminez and Yanick Paquette and got some stuff signed by Grant. Yanick was great, spending a long time talking about the differences between Moore and Morrison's scripts, and the craziness of working on Seven Soldiers. According to him, Grant sent him a five page script, which had various parts written in different size fonts and colored letters.

I asked Grant about this right after and he said it was a twenty page script always, that you'd have to be insane to write a five page script. So, I don't know who to believe. But, Paquette said that both the Grant minimalist system and Moore's huge script system work because they give the aritst room to imagine the scene and make the artist work to create something, not just tell you exactly what to draw.

Phil Jiminez was awesome as well, he talked about working on The Invisibles, and how he'd have loved to kept working on the series, but the scripts were just coming in too late. It's strange to see everyone bringing him Infinite Crisis or Spider-Man comics, since I think of him mainly as the artist for The Invisibles.

One phenomena I'd never seen before was the suitcases of comics people would roll in hoping to get signed. I like to have a couple of pieces signed, but these dudes were ridiculous, ten or fifteen comics a person. But, everyone seemed gracious about it, and I had a great time so far. Back tomorrow for the Grant panel and more aimless wandering around.

And, Grant and Kristan were definitely the most stylish couple at the con, though Jim Steranko was close behind, rocking an awesome hair style and slick looking suit, every bit the older Nick Fury.

so, the Virgin thing: GM will adapt bits of the Mahabarata, setting them in the future for online episodes to be animated in 3D Motion Capture and directed \ produced by Shekhar Kapur [ELISABETH].

also, re: the Virgin Comics thing that Grant M. is doing -- I was thinking, maybe it's an animated project because he's exclusive with DC Comics and therefore can't do any comics for any other company until his excl. contract is up.

Don't Exclusive Deals only cover Marvel or DC Universe stuff? Ellis is Marvel exclusive and still has books under Wildstorm, Image and Avatar coming out.

had a great time! mike mignola and orson scott card were also quite fun to hear from. mike mostly talked about movie stuff and short stories. lobster johnson will not be in hellboy 2 but might be in 3. some short story compilations coming our way. Hellboy's next comic story will involve backwoods witchcraft in the American Appalachians.

card is working on Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow, the simultaneous comics serieses, with movie adaptations in mind. apparently, while waiting for his chance to speak at the marvel presentation, he dreamed up a sequence in some future book where a magically immortal character is sucked up by a tree and lives in it for 1500 years before being born on a branch like fruit.

grant talked a lot about seaguy and batman and a little about final crisis. for some reason the first 20 minutes of his hour was taken up by a slideshow of his work, narrated by some guy reading old GM quotes patched together, or something.

he also mentioned an idea he'd had called Hyper Crisis, in which the chronovore had eaten the first ten years of the 21st century, and the super heroes were trying to patch the gap with a bridge formed of staged storytelling events - a kind of fourth wall commentary on continuity problems in comics. apparently, this idea was passed on in favor of Identity Crisis.

uhm, let's see...he talked about superman as modern day sun god. no plans for ASS beyond issue 12, though he may explore sort of side-stories. touched on his mind-blowing 5D experience in Kathmandu, how he's never been able to duplicate it with drugs, and how it's the reason he often writes characters trying to break out of their 2D world.

it was my first time seeing any of them in person. they were all quite humorous, really. and, aside from GM, self-deprecating.

I actually found that quote thing quite cool, and a good way to get people hyped up for the panel, though it would have been better if Grant had not actually entered the room until the end, or it would have been better if Grant had been reading the quotes instead of that random guy.

Other interesting stuff from the panel was the fate of The Authority. After all you haters out there hated on the first issue, he said "Fuck it" and decided not to continue the series. The first issue certainly had its problems, but I'd have liked to see where he went with it. Wildcats has a second script delivered to Jim Lee, however, I got some stuff signed by Lee later and he said that issue #2 was not in the works, and would take a long while to get to. So, don't hold your breath.

After the panel, I asked him about Indestructible Man, and he said that it had been abandoned because it was too dark and morose. But, he and Quitely will be back with another superhero project after Superman is over, and then a creator owned project. So, it seems like the team will be sticking together.

Have you really read the board. We weren't all haters. I for one thought those two authority issues had a lot of potential. I hope he finishes it. Same with Wildcats.

However, I am more excited about Sea-Guy and the creator owned stuff.

Grant is a big boy, if he wants to finish it he will.

However, if he wants help, he can always ask us crazy folk at Barbelith for a wank to help him out.

Before Grant, were comics this sticky?

they were... remember Spider-Woman, She-Hulk, Wonder-Woman and Red Sonja.

thanks for the reports, guys, keep them coming. I've been reading the Beat, CBR [and also it's Live feed] and Newsarama's Blog for info.

Pacific, usually the exclusive contracts allow author to do creator-owned work wherever they like [unless it's someting that ties them with DC's Vertigo or Marvel's Icon].

and what GM is doing for Virgin qualifies as "company-owned", as he's adapting a work that is not his for them... I guess the Chopras have been wanting him to do anything for Virgin for a while and that's what they managed to sort out. which sounds great as it is.

Well, I meant more the haters out on the general internet. I think there was definitely merit in both Authority issues, though issue one may have been a bit decompressed and low key beyond what was needed to get the point across. I'm assuming Grant decided that his take on The Authority wasn't really vital or worth the time, so he decided to stop it instead of continuing. But, wasn't it only two more issues anyway? It'd be nice to see those finished.
