(Just realised that "manned-up" might not be entirely okay. Apologies to anyone who's uncomfortable with it, although I hope we can all agree that my challenge produced productive worthwhile results)

...'tis acceptable, given your generous admission. Lots of ordinary guys are mayo-curious, but not all of them say so.

Dare I say it but well...mayo...baked beans.....toast...it works rather well.

I am now considering trying mayo and brown sauce with formentioned beans and toast.

How did this thread get to four pages without the word 'tortilla' appearing? I may take some baked beans with rye toast on the side, but if you're going to put the beans onto something in the bread family the tortilla must come under consideration at some point awful quick. Especially if the words 'sausage', 'rice', or 'eggs' have entered the picture. But no sign of 'tortilla' or - the (North) American type - 'biscuit' is breaking my poor little heart.

the (North) American type - 'biscuit'

Just what are they made out of? I have heard a little bit about them but not alot.

They are like savoury scones, or big dry dumplings. And gravy and biscuits looks exactly like scones in porridge.

Biscuits: flour, baking powder, and water. Optionals include salt, sugar, butter, lard, buttermilk, milk, or milk or butter substitutes, to taste or desired texture. Very good delivery system for everything from butter or jam, to red beans and sauce, flour and milk-based gravy, or chili.

This is a pretty simple recipe and explanation here even if I can hear relatives saying 'yankee' just reading it.

The transatlantic shift of 'biscuit' throws me off more than any other term's change of meaning, even though the meanings aren't nearly as different as some others.

Sounds interesting, I may have to do some cooking at some stage.

Yes but I don't think our proper biscuits would be suited to a topping of baked beans especially not the chocolate ones.

Each dot marking the skip of a biscuit. A, er, giant biscuit, thrown by a giant.

Okay, controversy time: how do we feel about baked beans with fish & chips? Or baked beans with fish fingers?

But hey i'm a takin' back!

Boboss has the right idea about poached eggs and beans.

That was me not boboss- he merely approved!!!

on a lighter note nobody has mentioned the delights of beans n chorizo in a red wine n tomato sauce... now that is a fine gastonomical experience.

Beans on salmon steak is very good (w/little lemon squeezed on there), truly and wonderfully. On breaded fish... I can't see that it'd hurt, but the juices wouldn't mix right.

And, yeah, I'll concede those cookies are the real and proper biscuit, but they seem to lack the delivery system potential of the multipurpose American biscuit.

Beans with fish batter is good, but not as good as beans with fish fingers which is pretty much Ultimate Food. It's like childhood (the good bits) on a plate.

Beans with salmon steak is... well... *new* springs to mind. Perhaps that sort of thing works well with Americee beans, but I would've thought any of the British varieties would completely drown the flavour of the salmon.

I like the idea of American biscuits. To my small mind they're almost exotic.

Of course nothing on Earth can resist a baked potato, beans, and a couple of sausages.

Econa's is all about the heat, then? I seem to remember it being rather hot.

It's not too bad, about the same as tobasco really (maybe a little stronger). It's just it goes better with meat and fish (mixed with tuna it makes a kick-ass sandwich).

Encona's hot sauce is made with scotch bonnet peppers isn't it?

Have you tried this new sweet mango chilli with beans? Mmmmmmm....

Of course nothing on Earth can resist a baked potato, beans, and a couple of sausages.

Except of course Cumberland Sausages Beans and Cheesy Mash....

Now that's comfort food.
