Appeal

This is an appeal to ask anyone who wants to pass people on to barbelith or has considered it to sign up to the Yahoo group ASAP.

Go to Yahoo, go to groups, search for barbelith apps and join. Make your identity clear and PM Fridgemagnet your email address with Yahoo Group in the PM subject. As soon as you're approved the file on how to use the system is in the files section of the group.

We have a MAJOR backlog. There are people waiting on the group database but we also have 303 applications in the email inbox that are not on the system.

If we had enough people everyone could process a couple of applications a week and that's no bother but as it is there is no way we can cope with this level at all. The fact that there are 303 applications is disturbing.

my fellow barbelinians;
ask not what your message board can do for you...
ask what you can do for your message board.

What's gmail?

(sorry, not being obtuse- I actually don't know. If it's a webmail thing I'm still no good- they're all blocked- if it's something else then I'm in).

It's google webmail. Don't worry about it, I think it's going to worse getting those names on to the database.

I applied to the group. I know I'm relatively new, but I think most 'lithers know I'm not Hawksmoor or ACAKAK. I want to help.

Finally, something that combines my love of helping people with my love of judging people.
Consider my application filed and my battleaxe sharpened so that we may make war upon these heathens and take their wives and cattle as our own.
That is what we're doing, right?

I was hesitant to join up because I have enough to do at the mo', but I've just gone ahead and done it.

I'm rubbish, where is it? Searching in yahoo groups for barbelith apps is coming up "No result found".

What kind of twisted mind games are you playing now Nina?

That happened me too at first, Evil, and the reason was I searched
http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/ instead of http://groups.yahoo.com/

i.e. try Yahoo Groups.

I've approved the applications for everyone who's sent me a PM (I think).

There are some left, but I don't want just anyone who happens to be reading these threads to get on the approval board and pass through a whole load of alts for themselves. That would defeat the entire point of not having open membership.

I've passed Boboss, elene can you send me a pm with your email address in it?

So, I'm in the Y! group, I've got the database in front of me. How do I find out new names to add to it?

Tryphena Absent
12:07 / 08.02.06
They've just been emailed over and are in the messages section. There are around 30 of them.

Ahh...I see...urgh, I might have just sent a message full of names from the Gmail account...bugger...I'll get to adding them.

ONLY NICE THINGS

Circling the wagons, briefly - what are our criteria? I can see:

1) Professional e-mail address
2) Paid-for email address
3) Demonstrable connection between blogs/websites (with reasonable amount of content) and applicant, e.g common email address.

Are we still emailing people to tell them they're being considered/ asking for a reply, or now that we're going on one approval is that gratuitous?

Tryphena Absent

I don't think there's any point emailing them if there's nothing to confirm. For instance I wouldn't email anyone with a corporate/university address, I would simply pass them.

I'm in too... good stuff.

I sent along an email to a fwd'd candidate since the last activity that I can find from this person was back in November 2005. Everything else checked out but I want to make sure.

That said, I'm happy to see that some people are taking application to Barbelith seriously. The length of sources and interests is nice to see. It'll probably reflect in their posts when the get in and get situated.

It says on the Db user's guide that It's important to enter *the date that the application hit the
database* rather than the date that the application was sent,
, where do I find this exactly? There only seems to be one date in the forwarded e-mail (when the applicant sent it) and the date the forwarded application was sent to me (yesterday).

Tryphena Absent
18:36 / 08.02.06
It will be in the window that shows a list of messages on the right. If there is no date it means the message was forwarded today.

Who's sending the email addresses off to Tom? Me?

(I've just passed a fella)

If you like.

Right here are some guidelines:

Don't worry about second checking.

Keep two windows open so you can check messages and databse against one another and make sure someone hasn't already passed that person.

Any questions ask here. We still have over 100 emails to forward. I know I'm being whippish but let's do this as quickly as possible without losing too much sense! Primarily anyone with an institutional or corporate email can be checked once and passed.

I appreciate that as a non-volunteer (stoatie defence) that I may not be in the best position to comment but once the current backlog has been reduced to a manageable level then you might wish to consider implementing a system that prevents repetition.

I would suggest a person or persons who would be responsible for monitoring the level of applications. This person or persons might monitor for a month or so before the responsibility falls to another approved volunteer. Should the level of pending applications reach 100 for example, then that person would send out a message to chivvy the current bank of "approvers" to get to work. If it exceeds 150 then they could post an appeal like this on on barbelith.

This would allow approvers to not feel the need to pay attention to the applications if they aren't in the mood for lith-work for a bit without completely missing important work.

One time approvers should unsubscribe from the group, once they are done, to allow proper assessment of the volunteer levels.

To be honest I'm just going to stick as the person who forwards email from now on. We're going to have to use my yahoo account to do it anyway because it's quite complicated and it's clear that it's too confusing otherwise.

Boboss, I've just sent an email to Tom with the latest passed people on it, but if you want to send them off next time then go for it. I generally send them off in groups of 10 - 20 or every week, whichever comes first.
