I didn't like the gig so much. I thought the sound was awful and the band was barely marginally interesting. Their style of music was executed reasonably well but i was unimpressed.

That said I was up the back and not in the pit at the front -which well have made all the difference.

The highlight of the night was meeting up with Benji from Dubwar latterly skindred... he was both approachable and a prick. rock n roll!

The best thing about the night was talking to stoat and the rest of the barbelith contingent. Long may be reign.

Still I have seen many many worse bands...

Well for me the gig was a huge success, I remember talking to Stoatie afterwards about the shamanistic qualities of Eugene Hutz. The guy managed to command what is a hugely uninspiring venue - no gradient in sight so if you're not down the front then there's no point being there, unless ofcourse you want the hermetic fun of watching from the balcony...

For once the punk adage of 'see you down the front' was actually worthwhile, since me and the SO danced band were jostled to our hearts content. Only disappointment was perhaps the stadium reggae treatment given to some of the songs, which meant that when they slowed it down you couldn't really dance, just stare into the distance.

As predicted the crowd was made up of bland indie kids who seemed to have never heard any of the songs before and just pogoed blindly until Hutz and the girl with the marching drum decided to crowdsurf - on said drum ofcourse.

It was great meeting Stoatie and the Chief, as well as your norwegian friend...speaking of which, any chance I can get those Crime and the City solution cds off you chief?

Hehe, makes me feel like Bill Murray saying that, anyways great gig from where I was standing, think it says more about the Pastoria than the band that opinions differ further back. Oh well...

Another highlight of the night for me was seeing Stoatie skipping hand in hand down the aisle with a mohawked punk in a tassled red silk teddy... I was jealous as hell!

My friends never dress out in inwear.

Which reminds me, Stoatie- did you get an ugly death metal rattle of an answerphone message?

finally got my membership thru. it only took about 6 weeks to join this site. this is my first post. yeah, I saw Gogol in manchester in March. one of the best, if not the best gig I have ever seen.

I am finding Hutz very interesting. that whole thing of bein an underdog, transposed from one culture to another. he seems very interested in the idea of authenticity. anyway, the whole thing is making me want to go and live in a caravan in a layby on the M5.

next month, it's the Brian Jonestown Massacre...

Just got the JUF album from eMusic... fuck me, it's ace! Reminds me a bit of Barry Adamson, only a lot more fun.

Damn, that Hutz guy's a fucking genius.

According to the Gogol site (some time ago, I think), J.U.F. 2 is in the works - cannot wait!

If you like J.U.F. (Gogol Bordello v Tamir Muskat), you might want to check out Balkan Beat Box, Tamir Muskat's band with Ori Kaplan (who has also played with GB). It's got a little different feel without Hutz's What The Fuck Style - "trancy-er," maybe, and heavier on the Middle Eastern influence than the Balkans (despite the name) - but good.

What I really want to hear (help, anyone??) is Hutz's DJ mixtape(s) from the Bulgarian Bar. I've heard it's WTFStyle gone nuts, but I've yet to track one down.

If you're like Gypsy Punk: Mehanata: New York Gypsy Mania

2-CD compilation from the Bulgarian Bar, where Hutz DJs. Featuring: Gogol Bordello, Hungry March Band, Romashka, Balkan Beat Box & Eugene Hutz, Slavic Soul Party, J.U.F., Guignol, Dolomites, Luminescent Orchestrii, Zagnut Cirkus Orkestar, Yuri Yunakov, Shaat'Nez

I've listened to the samples on CDBaby, and it's pretty good all through. No new material from Gogol or JUF, but the BBB&Hutz track is a neat reworking of the same traditional song that became "Not A Crime."

here seems to be a good enough place to mention that they are playing manchester, London, and I think also some uk festival in July (06).

I can't recommend seein them enough. I saw them in March- as I said elsewhere on the forum, I don't know if they are the best band I have ever seen, but I sure can't think of a better one. they really put everything into it...

Just got a copy of Underdog World Strike; bloody hell. Nice. Thanks FFF for the recommendation!

They're playing Leeds Festival later this month, but my budget don't stretch to three festivals in three weeks. I await their future tour dates with great interest...

it's the world inferno friendship society without the songs or the sincerity. i'll pass.

Interestingly, World/Inferno Friendship Society's albums Just the Best Party and International Smashism were recorded by Balkan Beat Box/Gogol Bordello member/collaborator (respectively) Tamir Muskat.

Y'know, trivia.

I love W/IFS, but I vigorously disagree with your comparison, coweatman. Opinions being what they are, though, I won't try to argue the point.

World/Inferno Friendship Society...who they?

The quick answer: they're a NYC-based "circus punk" band that would probably be appreciated by fans of GB, and vice-versa (with some exceptions, see above).

They are also the topic of a new thread, with more details and some links.

In addition to their regular UK/Europe tour dates, GB will be giving a free performance in London on the 5th.

From the GB mailing list:

Both bands will do a signing at the Vans store (47 Carnaby Street, London)starting shortly after 3pm.

Space for both event will be limited, so access is on a first come first served basis."

SHIIIT.

I'm helping someone move house that day. RIGHT. Can one of you come round and injure my arms? Nothing really bad, mind you, but something that would make me incapable of heavy lifting?

I saw GB and Bedouin on Monday night, and Bedouin were alright I spose but GB fucking rocked the house. The support was good enough, but the venue (Brighton Dome) was a bit too posh and tried to stop crowd surfers etc. all the way through I was thinking 'When Gogol come on they'll rip this place in half' and they fucking did as well. And I touched Eugene's mic hand.

Interesting aside- when I went to get tickets they were in their tour bus outside the venue and peeking in I saw they were watching a film. Trying to discern what it was through the tinted windows I recognised Ade Edmonson smashing Rik Mayall's face off a photocopier. That's right, Gogol Bordello are Bottom fans.

In Gogol-related news: new Balkan Beat Box album out today! Hit the shops (or eMusic)!

Also, the Gogol website claims that the new GB album is "in the final stages." Maybe this Summer?

Yea! Downloading the new album as I type.
I'm going to see them at the Oxygen festival next month and I can't wait. Unfortuantly it's one of the shittest festival in the world. Money grabbing fucks that they are.

Super Taranta's pretty fucking ace. I'd already downloaded the first three tracks, but I'm glad I waited for the rest of it. It's the most consistent, most coherent, and just plain funniest thing they've done to date.

But unfortunately there'll be no judgement day
It would be kind of fun to see
What they would have to say
When the god they preached
Would actually be there
And all who didn't like The Stooges
Would go to fucking hell!

There's also "Alcohol", a touching love song to my favourite drug.

Yeah, I'm really digging this album.

I'm quite getting into it on the third listen. Nice accordions. Very nice. Mr Hutz is certainly some kind of intellectual though, so he might have to be watched. Closely.

I met this band in a campsite in Paris last year. Their manager was from Ireland but with this bizarre accent that was strained through like eastern europe and california. They were all pissed and the manager was boasting that if we gave them our vodka one of them would sink the whole thing in one go. Never got to meet Hutz though, they were all waiting for him, he arrived in a black car with tinted windows and wouldnt get out. I passed out shortly after. I need anti-anecdote medicine stat.

Super Taranta is my favourite album at the moment. I love this band so much it hurts. The way they make me feel reminds me of being a teenager and finding a band that seemed to sum up your entire world view. If anyone out there hasn't heard this album yet then do yourself a favour and buy it immediately.

this band seems like straight up kitsch for tourists to me. i've got my bias, though - as someone with a real love for early jamaican music who survived the 90s, i hate seeing bullshit versions of music i enjoy blow up while better iterations of it get ignored - eg i'd rather listen to fanfare ciocarlia or taraf de haidouks than this bullshit, and i actually walked out of a ten pound gogol bordello show in boston in 2003 out of sheer boredom.

it doesn't read as "i am playing music i love", it reads as "look how crazy and wacky i am! isn't this crazy and wacky!". yeah, it's some hipster shit, but it's also the relationship that reel big fish had to desmond dekker.
