I'm coming to California

I'll be flying into Sacramento 02.03.06 and flying back 12.03.06, to spend just over a week resting and doing cool stuff with my family.

They're based in and around Vacaville, which means that San Francisco is pretty close by. I was wondering whether any local Barbelithers are up for hanging out if you're around.

It's also my birthday 06.03.06. A couple of years back I spent my birthday hanging out with someone I knew barely at all. It'd be cool to do something similar this year!

And there was I thinking that this was the first stage of a hunting lodge world tour... take California, man...

Well, you barely know me and I'm in Berkeley, and my birthday's in March too, albeit the day after you leave. Thoughts?

How about we have ourselves a Birthday celebration?

What's good in the way of meeting places? Being a Brit I tend to drink a lot and go to pubs, make an idiot of myself and fail on the pull. But I'm happy to be open to all ideas from people who know the area well.

I'm also likely to not be too mobile under my own steam. That may entail time consuming public transport, but I'm happy with that.

Ooh, I'm long overdue for a trip to SF, and also have a March birthday. Would the weekend of the 11th work?

18:53 / 02.02.06
I'm also public-transit bound, so sticking to places near the BART line is ideal for me. I habitually meet people at Beckett's in Berkeley; it's close to Berkeley BART and in a very pretty building. It is, however, very faux-British, and if such things are likely to offend rather than amuse-- or if Berkeley is farther out of people's way than they'd like-- there are many other places to choose from.

Oh, and I'll check my schedule when I'm at home for when would be best. Sunday night is always bad, but everything else moves around a bit.

My schedule is pretty cramped, but I'd love to get to get the chance to put faces to the fictionsuits.

Seth
00:40 / 03.02.06
I'm flying from Sacramento at just gone midday on Sunday 12th March, so if we do something the weekend of 11th March that's my only deadline.

A three way Barbelith birthday celebration is sounding unstoppably brilliant, and a faux-British pub sounds hilarious (and probably not that different from a Wetherspoons bar, which is Britains own faux-British pub brand).

I could also manage the previous weekend, but assumed that you'd be with your family since you will have just arrived. Any preference for one over the other?

I'd be delighted to come to Berkeley.

05:57 / 03.02.06
It seems that I'll have the weekend of the 11th free. The previous weekend the only currently scheduled event is a site visit for my class at around mid-day saturday.

Oh, excuse me. Beckett's is of course faux Irish; my mistake.

Ooh, it's my birthday on the 12th, we could... oh wait, I'm thousands of miles from Berkely.

lekvar
04:32 / 07.02.06
Well Seth's making the effort, what's your excuse?

Seth
09:51 / 07.02.06
Yeah, Quantum.

Plus I'm ambidextrous. Bet one of your hands is crappier than the other, eh?

Who's laughing now?

Seth
09:52 / 07.02.06
I'm not really ambidextrous.

Seth
09:53 / 07.02.06
But the word *ambidextrous* is losing all meaning now.

See what you've done, Quantum?

*
05:28 / 09.02.06
Quants, you share a birthday with my grandmother. Are you by any chance turning 96? and are you a tiny Jewish woman?

*
17:20 / 18.02.06
Saturday, March 11th, 8pmish? That way if we decide to go to a club afters we'll have time? I'll probably eat while you folks drink, since I don't really do that thing.

Sounds perfect. As soon as I find out where I'll be staying, I'll send you the info, id_entity. I don't know the area well, so if you'd be so kind as to advise on travel times and so forth, that would be swell.

Very much looking forward to it.

04:48 / 20.02.06
Being a recent transplant, and one who doesn't drive, my impressions of travel times may not help you. That said, I can tell you exactly how long it will take you to get from my house to the Berkeley BART station on foot...

Seth
08:14 / 21.02.06
Sounds good, although I have to reiterate that I need to be at Sacramento Airport by about 0930 at the latest the following day. Is that possible?

*
17:09 / 21.02.06
Possible, yes. Pleasant, maybe not. Unfortunately there's a house event I need to attend on Friday, so it would have to be Saturday, or sometime in the week, for me.

Will you have a car, or are you trying to go by train?

By Bus
Greyhound no longer offers San Francisco-Sacramento express service.

By Car
Sacramento lies at the junction of I-5 and I-80, about 90 mi northeast of San Francisco.

By Train
Book using Amtrak.com. A fare from Oakland's Jack London Square, which you should be able to ride BART to albeit not at five am on a Sunday, is a direct 2 hour trip which costs $17.00. The earliest you could possibly get to Sacramento, though, is 9:15... or so it appears.

Damn. I may have to miss part of my house event on Friday, unless you have another transportation idea. Amtrak blows screaming chunks at the moon, schedule-wise, because they get no public funding worth speaking of.

Seth
00:20 / 23.02.06
Hmmm. I'm going to be on public transport. And that depends entirely on where we're going to be partying as to how easy it will be to get to the airport. Is San Francisco the nearest place for public transport to Berkley?

*
05:38 / 23.02.06
This is the best place to figure out Bay Area transit stuff.

If we need to do it Friday, we'll do it Friday. I'll get someone else to cover my responsibilities here. You all have my number (I think) so we can coordinate more as the time approaches (which it doth swiftly on little cat feet).

Seth
01:57 / 25.02.06
I'm thinking that Friday is probably better for me. Is that too much hassle for you guys?

*
22:34 / 25.02.06
For me it will be okay. I'd like to move it a bit earlier, though, if possible... say around 7? We could make it dinner? What d'you say?

Seth
11:50 / 26.02.06
Sounds great. Still the same place in Berkley?

I'm going to be staying in Vacaville. Is that on anyone's through route?

*
07:00 / 27.02.06
Beckett's, on San Pablo.

Fred? Are you still paying attention? Is this okay?

HCE
19:25 / 27.02.06
Hi guys. Actually Friday works better for me as well, as it turns out. Where's Vacaville? I'm driving up the 5 from Los Angeles.

Seth
04:20 / 28.02.06
Vacaville is right next door to Napa, which (if I'm reading this map right) is on the 80 halfway between San Francisco and Sacramento. So it's a bit far out of anyone's way. However I remember a ferry that runs to SF, so I could do that.

*
06:24 / 28.02.06
You'll be better off on a train, I think, if there's one. (or a bus to a train) A ferry will take for fucking ever. At least that would be my guess.

HCE
18:35 / 28.02.06
It may turn out that I'm flying rather than driving, myself, I'm afraid.

Mr Tricks
20:38 / 28.02.06
So wait-a-minute . . . who's coming out from where?

I'm in Oakland and also have a B-day in March. Isn't Beckette's on Shattuck... actually about a block south of Jupiter's which is somewhat "Berkeley" and likely to have pretty good live music.

I can rarely plan a night out . . . until that night. But there could be fun to be had in that area... Shattuck DownLow 's another live music spot.

Plenty of great eats in that area as well... Kyoku is a Rocking sushi place that's on the southern most area of the Shattuck Down town.

Long Life Veggi House is great if you're not a meat eater... right down town.

And lots of other types of food in that area: Thai, Indian, Crepes, Mediterranean, West African, Tibetan, Pizza, Gelato and more...

Welcome to the party, Mr. Tricks! What's your preference? I just picked Beckett's because I know where it is, and it's pretty and hard to miss.

Seth
09:37 / 01.03.06
Flying out tomorrow everyone. See you soon.
