I don't know about anywhere else, but Fishscale is going for a ridiculously low price here in Kentucky. Eight american dollars brand new! Amazon's selling it for cheap too! Could it be that the music industry has finally realised that the best way to encourage people to go out and buy new music is to make it affordable? If that's the case, then it's working on me, because Fishscale is the first record that I've bought brand new in at least five years.

(...and, on first listen, the record is pretty solid.)

I've spunked my birthday cash, some of, on this and my initial instinct is it's actually the best Ghost album. 'Supreme Clentele' was great and all, but I feel it trails off a bit toward the end after the Woodrow sketch, whereas this is what, 19? tracks and at least 14-15 are guaranteed Wu-bangers.

Need to get a bit more familiar with it, soon.

Yeah, so this fucking rules. Starks (sorry, 'The Monster Don') is so on point with his delivery, and there's a distinct lack of filler, which immediately puts it up there. On initial listen, the Wu cut is a standout (Come on boys - stop arsing about and make a new album), with Doom's beat providing a surprisingly RZA-like backdrop for the verses. In fact Doom's shit is very complimentary to the whole album. Pete Rock's 'Be Easy' is awesome, love the tempo, best Pete rock for ages blah, blah, blah. And of course 'The Champ', which could only be killer with a title like that.
fuck it, you've all said it better, but just wanted to add my two-penneth.

Oh yeah...

IT'S GOT HIS WACK SINGING ON IT!

Hey, so has anyone heard any of the Ghostface mixtapes that are running around now? I'm particularly interested in the Hidden Darts tapes that feature a lot of the songs that got cut off Pretty Toney, and the Broiled Salmon tape that's got the original (uncleared samples and all) version of The Champ.

No, sorry. The Streets' remix of the the song he did with Cassius a while back is really good though.

Question:
On '9 mmm Brothers', who takes the last verse? It's tight, but I can't figure which lesser-Wu it is.

It´s U-God. (The rat pack is back from the island of Stat'...)

And, as has been said before, this album is FANTASTIC!

I figured it was prolly him. It's a strong verse from someone I've not rated much. Starks brings out the best in 'em I reckon.

I went out and picked up FishScale today (only £10 in Fopp) on the strength of the recommendations in this thread. It fucking rocks.

Current can't-get-enough track = 'Jellyfish'. Great distorted organ sound from Metal Fingerz, it features Ghostface's famous WACK SINGING! However this is really about the verse from Trife Diesel, which is spotless: "Throwin that ass like Ciara on the top of that whip"! (You need to have seen the video for 'Oh' to really get this.) These days I think Trife might even be a better sparring partner for Ghost than Raekwon is...

I'm always behind the times with regard to hip-hop, and still haven't heard Ghost's record with Trife or that Theodore Unit mixed tape thing. When they came out I heard nothing but good stuff, but that may have been folks just compensating for not being blown away by the less than great Pretty Toney record. So, with a little hindsight, and in relation to a strong new Ghostface LP, how does everyone think those two record hold up?

All four are blinding discs, including Pretty Toney IMO.

m
21:33 / 27.04.06
Oh, I like Pretty Toney a lot too, but unlike everthing else I own by Ghost, I find myself skipping over a few tracks. Actually, I think Fishscale's got some weak things on it too, but definitely not as many and they're all conveniently located at the very end of the disk.

Ghostface gigs in Europe?

I was in the Melkweg in Amsterdam yesterday and completely flipped my wig when I saw a poster advertising a gig by the Wally Champ himself at that same venue on Sept 28th... so I figured, shit, if he's making a trip here he's got to be paying a visit to the UK. However, ticketmaster turns up nothing, nor does his official site. Anybody heard anything? Not that I wouldn't be prepared to travel back to Holland to catch him... and I'm sure lots of London Barbelith types would salivate at the prospect of some Starks action in the locality!

Is there any talk about a release date for Swift & Changeable? I couldn't Google up anything except for "Autumn," which doesn't really help me out all that much.

From the Wu-Tang website:

© The Wu-Tang Corp.- 2006-08-07

According to MF Dooms Myspace page, The collabo album between Ghostface Killah and MF Doom titled "Swift & Changeable", will drop February 2007. The album will be released on Lex Records/Nature Sounds, which has done great work with Wu-Tang artists recently such as Masta Killa and Mathematics. Rumours on the Internet suggest this project will just be an EP, but we can confirm this will be a full album from Iron Man & Metal Face.

He's playing Rock City in Nottingham on the 3rd of October and the Village in Dublin on the 8th. I'd be surprised if he wasn't playing in London too, but a quick search of Ticketmaster and Seetickets suggests not. More clued-up cats may know different though...

So I got tickets for me and baby brother to see Ghostface in Nottingham. Has anyone seen him live before? Am I in for a treat, or did I just waste thirty quid that could have been better spent on three copies of Supreme Clientele (one for weekdays, one for Sunday best and one to keep special just in case the Queen comes for tea)?

Also, Theodore Unit are supporting, and I have to confess to knowing very little about them. What should I expect? Do I need to go out right now and get myself a copy of 718 in order to be better prepared, or would that be a good point in the show to nip to the bar?

Dude. Go buy 718. Seriously. It's magnificent. The Drummer just jaw-dropping.

For Ghostface live, witness the DVD that comes with Put it on the Line. You're in for a treat.

Hope you have fun, toksik. I saw the gig in Nottingham last week and enjoyed myself, but wasn't massively impressed. It was being broadcast on 1 Extra, and because of their scheduling (I'm told) Ghostface didn't take the stage until well after 1am, by which time the crowd had lost a bit of their momentum. I'm also told the late start gave him time to polish off a bottle of Hennesey and a whole roast chicken backstage, which would help explain a slightly sluggish performance.

There were a lot of good bits, including Daytona 500, Triumph, Ghost's very dapper black, purple, green and white jumper (which made him look like a big liqorice allsort) and the point where he got all the lghts in the venue turned out and led a mass shoutalong of Shimmy Shimmy Ya lit only by phones and lighters which was cheesy, exhilarating and quite touching, all at the same time.

Dix-Neuf, thank you for recommending 718. I would never have picked it up on the back of Theodore Unit's performance at that gig (low point: "What's up London?") and I'm really glad I did. You're right, The Drummer is astounding, so I don't know why they didn't play it! That was a bit of a theme of the night though - a weird refusal to play the tunes that are guaranteed to make people jump up and down, and instead just choosing to chug along being quite good. We didn't get nearly enough of Ghostface's singing either.
