Lothar, I agree except that rather than say ecstatic states I'd say altered states. The traditional ecstatic methods aren't necessarily needed to enter altered states and it is in altered states the spirit world is touched.
Agreed with the caveat that there are a lot of altered states that do not effectively allow for shamanic work where traditional ecstatic methods work very well. For example, it wouldn't be a good idea to attempt shamanic journeying while shitfaced on Jack Daniels or while on antihystemines. Also, transcendental meditation may be great for providing an altered state where one may strive for personal enlightenment but won't usually provide you with a shamanic state of consciousness.

When you were typing that did you have the concept in your head in a non-verbal way and it was like trying to get a handle on it and explain it, and as it started to shift into amorphia you had to get a second different handle. In this way you try and capture in words a non-verbal thought, by trying to describe it from different angles?
Kind of. For awhile I've metaphorically been seeing this shadow out of the corner of my eye. While writing the post I caught sight of it's tail and grabbed hold. I still can't see the entire beast and I'm not sure if it's dragging me or if I'm dragging it.
Anybody else want to pull on it's tail? |
