I think I broadly agree with Rizla's point re the whole precious, precious records thing. I know that I have to really force myself to give an album the time it deserves
these days, simply because there's so much other stuff just a click of the mouse away, stuff that might grab me in a more immediate fashion. But, and I think this is the point, I do make the effort. Downloading is hardly a passive pastime and, therefore, I imagine many downloaders probably do make that little bit more effort with the music they obtain.
Regardless, however, I get the feeling that the sea change in the way we appreciate music is precisely that. It's a different form of appreciation - soundtracking - but it's a form of appreciation nevertheless. Not worse, just different. |
