You wacky wristwatch-wearers and your extra vowels.

Weapon of choice for annihilating a group: puns. Unfortunately they're illegal in the U.S.

OK, so I'm pretty anti-gun, and I don't like the things at all and they make me nervous, BUT, if I really, for some reason, absolutely had no choice but to clear out a room I would probably want to use one of these

and to be brutally honest I sort of want one anyway. But not to use! I'm a collector. And an enthusiast.

I could do without the haircut, but the shirt's pretty cool.

In which case, well done, ha ha ha, I seem to be the only sap who fell for it.

No, not the only one.

I've never owned a gun and I don't know anything about them, but my boyfriend likes guns, so I asked him. He said he would choose a glock 9 mm with a 32 round clip, a compensator and a flash supressor. Whatever that is.

Fun With Phobias, funnily enough I have used a video of Gary Oldman with that stupid haircut and awful accent to empty a room. Works a treat. I can also recommend episodes of 'Judge John Deed' and 'Hetty Wainthrop Investigates' although if you're not American you will get sent to the Hague for crimes against humanity.

Powered by clockwork, fires anarchist bombs with fuses. Better than any of your "real" guns.

The FN-P90 is a very capable weapon.

For handguns, I chose the .45ACP 1911-A1. Spare parts are profilic, they are one of the most reliable handguns ever, and the stopping power of a subsonic .45 is tremendous.

For Assault Rifle, I'd pick the FN-P90. It's fucking hard to find 5.7mm rounds, tho.

For a MBR (Main Battle Rifle), I chose the HK-91. Of course I bought the semi-auto version, not the full-on automatic + 3 round burst.

Why do people not like registering their weapons? Lessons of history. Gun registration, in the past, has been used to become 'gun collection lists' when the government turns oppressive. I was just writing something about stalin and hitler, but it sounded too fatalistic so I'm going to skip it.

...the last time we tried to have a serious discussion about firearms but it didn't go well.

Didn't go so hot this time, either. Most posters to this thread immediately treated it as a joke, and a couple seemed offended and/or concerned that the topic even came up. Was it the flippancy of the opening post that doomed the thread, or is it just really hard to talk seriously about guns* on Barbelith, and if so, why? Is it about a US/UK culture divide, or is that sophistic?

*not gun-control/rights/ethics/etc., but talking shop about guns

"...the last time we tried to have a serious discussion about firearms but it didn't go well."

Well whilst Lady appears to have proffered wisdom, [sulk] that comment was edited in by him/her after after I'd made my post. If it had been there before it may just have made me stop and think... and not make such a tit of myself. And the thread may have happily gone on in the you-show-me-yours-I'll-show-you-mine vein it started as, rather than being rotted by the good/bad debate. [Can't you just tell I've been waiting for an opportunity to say that? Spot the newbie.]

But answering your question. Yeah, the opening post was a bit too blase for my liking, but then that was because I (amongst others) missed the joke. For me blase + jokes + guns is a bit of an opaque mix. Very clever if you're in on the joke, but can bring up any number of responses if you aren't. Which makes it a pretty clever thread topic, admittedly.

But needs to go in another forum if you want to discuss power/majesty of guns.

This is why Barbelith needs cross-forum threads. The Art, Fashion, Design thread could start off with the ideas from Bowie's Outside and cross in Music!

Actually, a while back, I was planning to start an "aesthetics of destructive tools" thread in AFD but never got round to it. Give me a little while and I'll kick it off - need to find the image that prompted it.

Probably not a real danger, but some of these postings seem pretty un-ironically leaning in that direction--cf. "farseer" above, e.g.

Alex seems to have this problem a lot, Lepidopteran. It often seems as if his ideas, which are as valid as anyone else's, just aren't taken seriously here. Do people think there needs to be a thread about this, perhaps in the Policy?
